Nashville Chrome, by Rick Bass

"Bass creates a slice of music history from the ground up, from the backwoods and front porches all the way to Elvis." —Los Angeles Times

1959: the Brown siblings are the biggest thing in country music. Their inimitable harmony will give rise to the polished sound of the multibillion-dollar country music industry we know today. But when the bonds of family begin to fray, the flame of their celebrity proves as brilliant as it is fleeting. In this arresting novel, acclaimed author Rick Bass draws poignant portraits of their lives, lived both in and out of the limelight. Masterfully jumping between the Browns’ once auspicious past and the heartbreaking present, Nashville Chrome is the richly imagined story of this forgotten family and an unflinching portrait of an era in American music.

"An empathic, breath-catching, mythic and profoundly American tale of creation, destruction and renewal." —Kansas City Star

"Splendid . . . Rick Bass’s best." —Dallas Morning News

Amazon.com Review

Late in 1959, the Brown siblings--Maxine, Bonnie, and Jim Ed--were enjoying unprecedented international success, rivaled only by their longtime friend Elvis Presley. They had a bona fide megahit on their hands, which topped both the country and pop charts and gave rise to the polished sound of the multibillion dollar country music industry we know today. Mesmerized by the Browns' haunting harmonies, the Beatles even tried to learn their secret. Their unique harmony, however, was only achievable through shared blood, and the trio's perfect pitch was honed by a childhood spent listening for the elusive pulse and tone of an impeccably tempered blade at their parent's Arkansas sawmill.

But the Browns' celebrity couldn't survive the world changing around them, and the bonds of family began to fray along with the fame. Heartbreakingly, the novel jumps between the Browns' promising past and the present, which finds Maxine--once supremely confident and ravenous in her pursuit of applause--ailing and alone. As her world increasingly narrows, her hunger for just one more chance to secure her legacy only grows, as does her need for human connection.

Lyrical and nuanced, Nashville Chrome hits all the right grace notes with its vivid evocation of an era in American music, while at its heart it is a wrenching meditation on the complexities of fame and of one family--forgotten yet utterly unforgettable when reclaimed by Bass--who experienced them firsthand.

Amazon Exclusive Essay from Rick Bass, Author of Nashville Chrome

A few years ago, when my daughters were a teen and a pre-teen, they were in love with the countryrockpop star Keith Urban, who would later go on to bend, but not break their, hearts by marrying actress Nicole Kidman. It was the beginning of that wonderful but bittersweet time when they were first starting to go out into the world on their own and were no longer always interested in me tagging along. A time when--in their minds if not mine--my relevance to their daily lives was dwindling. Maybe I can interview Keith Urban, I told them: fathercode for I am still a person of worth in your fast-growing-up lives.

I ran all the usual traps a journalist runs. I knew a bunch of fiction and environmental editors, but nobody at People magazine, and I can only imagine what those magazines thought when I began trying--unsuccessfully--to crack that beat. I contacted magazines, newspapers, editors, record companies, friends of friends, friends of friends of friends, and beyond. I was relentless. At some point, I'm sure I must have crossed over the line into stalking in the minds of Urban's managers, but over the years, the closest the girls ever came to him was receiving the archetypal mass mailing of a glossy 8" x 10" signed black-and-white photo, which--though they had far too much tact to point out to me--anybody's old father could have gotten. All their lives, I've preached to them the pleasures and satisfactions of following their hearts--that there are gifts in this world beyond the material--and that one of the benefits of living the penurious life of a freelance writer is the ability to pursue opportunities like this one, and to live with a schedule flexible enough to permit wild goose chases.

And so I kept trying. Eventually, I got hooked up with some movie people who were also angling for a meeting with Keith Urban. I went out to Nashville, where just by chance I bumped into the entirely unrelated but fascinating story of an old woman I'd never heard of, Maxine Brown, who had lived quite a life. I visited with her and her family for a couple of days and the more I listened, the larger the story got. I'd gone east looking for a modern celebrity and had instead found something infinitely rarer: an ancient, all-but-forgotten celebrity, the fast-fading dust of legend.

One can imagine the dismay of the girls.

Maxine and her family had grown up hardscrabble poor in the heart of the Great Depression and had been at the edge of the explosion of new country music: the quantum leap it made from the not-always-accessible high Appalachian sound into the multibillion dollar entertainment industry it would (for better or worse) soon become. Maxine and her sister, Bonnie, and brother, Jim Ed, possessed a haunting harmony that was perfect for the era--sophisticated and smooth, polished like chrome: a sound that allowed America to repress--for just a little longer--all the national troubles that were just beneath the surface at that time. The Browns were the first group to have a number one hit on both the country and the pop charts (and later on the folk charts--pioneers in the phenomenon of crossover hits) and were the number one selling group in England in 1957.

By the 1960s, however, they had practically vanished, and today, hardly anyone has heard of them or knows who they are--who they were. The novel quickly became an examination about the costs and nature of fame in America. I was particularly struck by how one sister, Bonnie, accepted the return of anonymity with grace and even what seemed to me like relief, while Maxine, the older sister, burned--and still burns, dreaming of fame's return. And I was fascinated, too, by the way the greatness of the era--Johnny Cash, Elvis, the Beatles, Chet Atkins, etc.--was drawn to the Browns, as if to a source or wellspring. What such springs exist today, and will they dry up, and if so, why?

Fires, floods, bars, and the heartbreak of betrayals--all the stuff of country music, then and now, was braided throughout the Browns' lives, occurring often and with great drama. It's a miracle they survived. In so many ways they were pioneers who blazed a way for the easy road, the silk road of wealth that would attend to talent in subsequent generations. Yet the burden of fame would become no easier--the Browns struggled with it then as entertainers of today still do.

Although I didn't get the story I initially went after (though I haven't given up; what kind of lesson would that be for the girls?), at least there was something that came out of the Keith Urban wild goose chase. A novel doesn’t just come along every day.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In his grand return to fiction, Bass (Why I Came West) summons--with a lyrical style befitting his best nature writing--Arkansas and backwoods trio the Browns, the true-life country music trailblazers who pioneered the 1950s sound from which the novel takes its title. Now half-blind and living in obscurity in west Memphis, the group's oldest sibling, Maxine, ruminates on the trio's fateful rise and subsequent fall from grace, and her struggle to recover fame. (Or is it recover from it?) Maxine sets out to have a documentary made and relives on the page a yearning that perhaps only a song or accomplished novel could intone. We revisit her childhood in the woods; live through brother Jim Ed's and father Floyd's bloody struggles in the wood mill; witness sister Bonnie's love affair with a young Elvis; and experience Maxine's reverie in front of "a standing ovation more powerful than any drug." Like the sound Chet Atkins pulls from the Browns in the studio, the narrative has a pitch-perfect chorus of longing and regret, with an undertone that connects and heals.

From Bookmarks Magazine
Critics disagreed somewhat over the success of Nashville Chrome, a fictionalized account of the Browns' life story and the burden of fame. All acknowledged that Bass is a master of his craft--from his storytelling abilities to his beautiful, lyrical prose. Here, his descriptions of the Arkansas swamps and the natural world shine. Yet reviewers diverged on a number of issues. A few thought that the best parts of the novel chronicle Maxine's present-day life--and her transition from an ambitious young star to a defeated, regretful old woman. Some, however, thought these sections tedious. Others complained that Bass never really gets inside the Browns' music. Despite these flaws, Nashville Chrome pays the Browns their due--and brings their music and times back to life.

This book is a revelation
By EJ
I'm very embarrassed to say that until I read an article about this book, I had no idea who the Browns were, although I have the nerve to call myself a music fan. Immediately I downloaded the book and was transported into a world that I knew very little about, written gorgeously in a way that almost reads like total fiction instead of being based on the lives of very real people.

This is the story of the Browns, a family growing up dirt poor in Arkansas during the depression, surrounded by the sounds of lumber mills and woods which would finely tune their sense of harmony. It is the story of how young country music stars were locked into contracts that barely allowed them to survive while enriching their dubious agents. It is the story of how the lives of many of the famous names you will recognize (Gentleman Jim, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and a little band called the Beatles) and the Browns were interwoven as they were all starting out and paving the road to what we now know as the county seat of country music--Nashville. The book alternates between telling the story of the Browns' rise to fame and subsequent fall with glimpses of Maxine as she is now, craving the excitement and fame that her unbelievably unique talent had once wrought upon her. The author, who wrote the book based on interviews with the family, captures the essence of their fleeting flame with heartbreaking clarity.

While reading this incredibly poetic book, I was googling and youtubing like mad. I expected to find some of the Browns' music and hear that it had that tinny `50s quality that was pleasant but not exceptional. Boy, was I ever wrong. Rick Bass is 100% accurate in describing the liquid beauty of their voices and the singular quality of their sound. Their music gives me goosebumps, and Mr. Bass brought it to life on the page.

Thank you, to Rick Bass for writing such a smoothly harmonized book that truly captures the essence of the Browns, despite the fact that the book is a novel. And thank you to the Browns themselves for such beautiful contributions to music. I am now proud to call myself a fan of the Browns, and I suspect that a second wave of very well-deserved fame will be washing over them again, any second now. This book is the legacy that I think Maxine Brown has always craved, in addition to her musical one.

Strong recommend for any reader. If you are a music fan or a country music fan, then that is just gravy, because this is universal story of what struggling to succeed was like before the insta-celebrity of reality TV and the internet.

The Most Famous Singers You Never Knew
By Jill I. Shtulman
Years before Elvis Presley burst onto the scene, there were the Browns - Maxine, Jim Ed and Bonnie - who rolled out number one hits, topping the charts and capturing the attention of famous singers who eventually followed.

People came - Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, and the King himself - just to hear them. "They came, they brushed up against the Browns, and then they went on their way - magic-brushed, and forged from a fire they sometimes didn't even realize they'd touch, though others of them understood right from the very beginning the nature of the raw talent they were witnessing."

In Nashville Chrome, the legacy of the Browns is explored - their longing for fame, the aftereffects of achieving fame, the recalibration of "home" with its myriad of meanings. The book is devoted to "truthiness"; Rick Bass quotes Ron Carlson in saying, "I try not to confuse the facts with the truth."

What he sets out to do is to unearth his truth and he does it with lyrical and often elegiac sensitivity. The Browns lived in simpler times... of small town growing-up, longings for love, dressing up for boys, cruel betrayals. Together as children, they sung three-part harmonies that were so smooth that they were dubbed "Nashville chrome." During an early performance, they naively sign an iron-clad contract with an exploitive, morally challenged manager who, in effect, "owns" them from that point on, paying them next-to-nothing and working them hard.

Rick Bass writes, "None of the Browns had a clue. They were like racehorses with blinders, thundering down the dirt track. There was a jockey lashing them, and the horses were dimly aware that there were people in the stands, but they knew nothing of where the track was going - whether it was straightening or circling in a loop - or of the consequences of their efforts and accomplishments."

The family eventually makes the acquaintance of a young and then-unknown Elvis; Elvis is drawn to the younger sister Bonnie and they enter into a sweet first love. Rather than lionize Elvis, this book humanizes him and chronicles this real-life friendship with unusual authenticity.

This is an exquisitely written book - a novel that jumps from the heyday of the Browns to the present, where Maxine - now aging, ailing, and yearning for her glory days - has never been able to obtain the serenity of her younger siblings. It's a psychologically-complex portrayal of a family "united in the desire to spill out onto the world and to change it before realizing that they each finally had to pull away." Kudos to Rick Bass for this incredible rendering.

I wish I had more stars - just an amazing read
By sb-lynn
Brief summary, no spoilers.

This book is a fictionalization of the lives the Browns - a country trio that dominated the country and pop charts back in the late 1950's. Never heard of them? I hadn't either, and I thought I knew quite a bit about music. As it turns out, The Browns were not only at the top of the charts, they were close friends and buddies with Elvis Presley, and even had the Beatles as fans. But they faded away during the 1960s, and are little known today despite having attained charting records that stand to this day.

What this book does is give us the background of Maxine, Bonnie and Jim Ed Brown, taking us from their impoverished upbringing in the backwoods of the deep south during the depression, all the way to the present, in their old age. In particular, we follow the thoughts and life of Maxine - the eldest sister and the most ambitious. The loss of fame was the hardest on her, and the scenes from her old age are emotional and poignant.

Which is how I can describe this whole novel. I was not that interested in the subject matter of this book, but a friend gave it his highest recommendation so I thought I'd give it a try. The writing is a wonder. Truly. The scenes are so well described, we can see, smell, taste and even feel them. And the ability of the author to so believably get inside the minds of characters in adolescence up to old age is impressive.

This is just a beautifully written story. There are so many exquisite passages, that I wouldn't know where to begin to excerpt. Here is just one short example :

"Floyd was born in 1895. Parts of three centuries separate the then from the now, the beginning of his life and the trailing-away of hers, and yet the sound wave of him, the disturbed energy of his presence and actions in the world, will not fade. A hundred and fifteen years separates where he began and where she is now, and what she remembers when she thinks of her father is not so much the fights of adolescence over control and suspicion, boundaries and rebellion, or his heroic labors in the forest, trying to scrape together a living, but the quiet dark spaces of early evening, the relative silences when he would come in from the mill, smelling of sawdust and diesel, and would go to the cabinet and take down his bottle and pour his first small glass of whiskey."

I hope this book gets a big audience, and I know that I will be picking up some of the author's past works. He is incredibly talented, and I am so glad and that I was able to experience this book because it really was a reading high for me, and it's going on my all-time best reads list. It's that good.

A cutting-edge account of the latest science of autism, from the best-selling author and advocate

When Temple Grandin was born in 1947, autism had only just been named. Today it is more prevalent than ever, with one in 88 children diagnosed on the spectrum. And our thinking about it has undergone a transformation in her lifetime: Autism studies have moved from the realm of psychology to neurology and genetics, and there is far more hope today than ever before thanks to groundbreaking new research into causes and treatments. Now Temple Grandin reports from the forefront of autism science, bringing her singular perspective to a thrilling journey into the heart of the autism revolution.

Weaving her own experience with remarkable new discoveries, Grandin introduces the neuroimaging advances and genetic research that link brain science to behavior, even sharing her own brain scan to show us which anomalies might explain common symptoms. We meet the scientists and self-advocates who are exploring innovative theories of what causes autism and how we can diagnose and best treat it. Grandin also highlights long-ignored sensory problems and the transformative effects we can have by treating autism symptom by symptom, rather than with an umbrella diagnosis. Most exciting, she argues that raising and educating kids on the spectrum isn’t just a matter of focusing on their weaknesses; in the science that reveals their long-overlooked strengths she shows us new ways to foster their unique contributions.

From the “aspies” in Silicon Valley to the five-year-old without language, Grandin understands the true meaning of the word spectrum. The Autistic Brain is essential reading from the most respected and beloved voices in the field.

Review

"These lighthearted, easy-to-read tales are told from a stuffed animal's ingenuous point of view. . . . This fun-filled escapade will not disappoint fans of the other "Three Stories" books and may just win some new ones." —School Library Journal

"Miller's gently idiomatic prose is ideal for children just easing into early chapter books, and though Kelley's teddy bear is not as expressive as her "real-life" animals, her wiggly-lined watercolors do capture Teddy's unsteadiness on his feet." —Booklist, ALA

May or May Not Be For You
By Nicholas K. Nordberg
I find this book VERY abstract. It's edgy, modern, more fashion show clothing vs every-day wear. Which might be very pleasing to some.

I wouldn't buy it again, if Id seen the inside.

To describe the inside so you can judge for yourself:

It includes pages that have mad-lib sort of stories. It includes two whole pages of eggs and bacon images. It has a 'make a fake profile for a model' page, like write in the models' fav song and whatever else. There's models in run-way like clown wear, there's a page to decorate and cut-out an eye mask.

The shoe pages look terrible to me. I like harder lines in pictures I color. And the shoes dont represent anything I would like coloring, like a good blahnik or madden shoe.

The female model pages, most of the clothing are like drapey simple dresses or drapey parachute-ish type pants. A lot of oversized shirts or blazers on the models.

Some pages have just a female head, where i guess you'd focus on make-up or hair design. A couple pages with just simple watches or hats.

Some pages seem to have nothing to do with fashion per se, a page of geometric lines or only flowers or only dots or check design.

I liked the fashion/designer quotes throughout the book. I like the 'games' where it was something like match this image of a designers head to their name.

Overall, I found this to be too abstract, too all-over the place for me. I would say it is less likely to please someone who's more into the coloring side and less into staring at run-way images.

I would love to find something in between this and other silly fashion options like barbie-doll images!!

Quirky and fun!
By Yelee Kim
Super fun and creative book - making it socially acceptable for adults to break out the colored pencils and crayons to color!! Coloring is fun, but add a fashion element to it? How can you NOT buy this book? I've bought several copies for my friends, and their eyes lit up when they flipped through the pages! Buy this book now!

Yippee! It is a winter wonderland! What better day for Mouse and Mole to go sledding, whirl around on ice skates, and build snowmen together?

But Mole does not want to go outside. Too cold! Too windy! He prefers to stay as snug as a bug in a rug inside his nice, warm bed.

Mouse is lonely. Ice skating and sledding just aren’t as fun for one. Then she gets an idea…a Sno-Mole might do the trick! Mole won’t be needing his hat or scarf or mittens…or will he?

Sometimes even best friends want to do different things. But at the end of a cold winter’s day, it's nice to know that your best friend will be there waiting for you, with warm mittens and all.

From School Library Journal
Gr 1-3–Filled with onomatopoeia, repetition, and the occasional rhyme, this installment offers another tale of friendship. Mouse ventures out into the snow to play while Mole stays warm in bed. Lonely Mouse builds her own playmate, Sno-Mole, whom she drags behind her on a sled to ice skate. Mole awakes just in time to see Mouse and her new companion heading down the path and becomes jealous. He bundles up and follows the pair to the pond where he tries to show off in front of Sno-Mole, but instead clumsily topples its head. When silly Mole recognizes his unfounded jealousy, he builds a Sno-Mouse to be Sno-Mole's best friend. Part Holly Hobbie's Toot and Puddle and part Arnold Lobel's Frog and Toad, Mouse and Mole display the endearing qualities of an enduring friendship. As this circular story unravels, it turns back to where it started, with similar wording, a familiar setting, and the same actions from its characters. Young readers will likely enjoy the simple irony and straightforward plot, while the many color illustrations reinforce the action and help them in in their transition to beginning chapter books.–Lindsay Persohn, Crystal Lake Elementary, Lakeland, FLα(c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist
Yee continues his Mouse and Mole series with another winning installment, which opens on a winter morning. Once again, the best friends’ opposite personalities create friction: Mouse can’t wait to enjoy a day of sledding and skating, while Mole prefers to stay in bed. But after a farcical, mistaken-identity scene with a snowman, the friends come together for outdoor fun, followed by fireside tea and cookies. As in the series’ previous titles, catchy rhymes, brisk dialogue, onomatopoeic sounds, and winsome ink-and-watercolor illustrations will easily draw new readers to this seasonal, episodic friendship story. Grades K-3. --Gillian Engberg

A very fun story about two friends and playing in the snow
By Joseph Dewey
I really liked this short kid's book. It's about two friends, Mouse and Mole. After it snows, Mouse is super excited to go out into the snow and play. Mole is more shy, and wants to stay indoors. So Mouse decides that since her friend won't come out to play, then she'll make a snowman that looks like her friend.

Mole finally ventures out of his warm house, gets jealous of Mouse's new "friend," and then the fun ensues.

It's a really nice, very fun book. The two characters have very different personalities, but are very good friends and figure out how to work together. I liked it a lot.

Pros:
+Really great, lively illustrations that capture Mouse's fun-loving spirit
+Good, fun story
+I really liked the friendship displayed between Mouse and Mole. This book teaches great teamwork.
+The reader of the audio version is great

Cons:
-Reading this book made me cold. Now I need some hot chocolate.

snuggle up for a winter tale
By Melissa Sack
Mouse and Mole are best friends but have opposite personalities. Mouse is excited when the snow comes! he can't wait to go out and play in it. When he gets to Moles house he finds out that Mole just wants to sleep the winter away! In the end their true friendship shines though and they are able to have a great day together! These stories remind our family of the Frog and Toad books. We would recommend them to other that enjoy those stories.

The Elephant's Journey, by José Saramago

A delightful, witty tale of friendship and adventure from prize-winning novelist José Saramago

In 1551, King João III of Portugal gave Archduke Maximilian an unusual wedding present: an elephant named Solomon. In José Saramago's remarkable and imaginative retelling, Solomon and his keeper, Subhro, begin in dismal conditions, forgotten in a corner of the palace grounds. When it occurs to the king and queen that an elephant would be an appropriate wedding gift, everyone rushes to get them ready: Subhro is given two new suits of clothes and Solomon a long overdue scrub. Accompanied by the Archduke, his new wife, and the royal guard, these unlikely heroes traverse a continent riven by the Reformation and civil wars, witnessed along the way by scholars, historians, and wide-eyed ordinary people as they make their way through the storied cities of northern Italy; they brave the Alps and the terrifying Isarco and Brenner Passes; across the Mediterranean Sea and up the Inn River; and at last, toward their grand entry into the imperial city.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The internationally respected Portuguese winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature died on June 18, 2010; this novel is being published posthumously. A novel with a greatly heroic main character certainly is not uncommon; however, when an elephant is playing that role, the novel can be considered unique, especially because it is based on an actual event. In 1551, King Joao of Portugal makes a startling diplomatic move by giving Archduke Maximilian of Austria the elephant housed on Portuguese royal grounds. The problem is that the elephant needs to be transported from Lisbon to Vienna. Because the era is pre–jumbo jet and Vienna is not a seaport, Solomon the elephant must walk! Solomon’s trek across Europe, across mountains and rivers, accompanied by his Hindu keeper and a host of other retainers and attendants, is followed in this extremely amusing, historically resonant, fablelike, and technically challenging narrative. The astonishment that Solomon arouses en route is summed up in one person’s reaction: “Well, it isn’t every day that an elephant appears in our lives.” Solomon shows quiet heroism yet is never anthropomorphized: “Despite his poor sight, he shot them a stern glance, making it clear that he was not some fairground animal, but an honest worker who had been deprived of his job by unfortunate circumstances too complicated to go into, and had, so to speak, been forced to accept public charity.” --Brad Hooper

Review

"It would be hard to more highly recommend a novel to be downed in a single draft…Simply, this books flows, and keeps on flowing."
--The New York Times

"His most optimistic, playful, humorous and magical book, a grace note written near the end of his life...The Elephant's Journey is a tale rich in irony and empathy, regularly interrupted by witty reflections on human nature and arch commentary on the powerful who insult human dignity."
-- Los Angeles Times

"Saramago...spun this whimsical yet compulsively readable tale...it's a perfect example of why [he] will be remembered as a master of surreal, enchanting prose."
-- GQ

"A picaresque romp that gleefully skewers the benighted souls clinging to outmoded worldviews while breathtaking new realities unfold right in front of them."
-- Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

From the Inside Flap

In 1551, King João III of Portugal gave Archduke Maximilian an unusual wedding present: an elephant named Solomon, along with his keeper, Suhbro. The two are in dismal conditions, forgotten in a corner of the palace grounds. When it occurs to the king and queen that an elephant might be an appropriate wedding gift, everyone rushes to get them ready: Subhro is given two new suits of clothes and Solomon a long over-due scrub.

Accompanied by the Archduke, his new bride, and the royal guard, our unlikely heroes traverse a continent riven by the Reformation and civil wars. They make their way through the storied cities of northern Italy: Genoa, Piacenza, Mantua, Verona, Venice, and Trento, where the Council of Trent is in session. They brave the Alps and the terrifying Isarco and Brenner Passes; they sail across the Mediterranean Sea and up the Inn River. (Elephants, it turns out, are natural sailors.) At last they make their grand entry into the imperial city of Vienna.

"An elephant is much more than just an elephant."
By Rich Stoehr
I had the strangest feeling while reading 'The Elephant's Journey' - I felt like a child, being told a story by an old and indulgent grandparent. I saw him clearly, sitting in an old comfortable chair in a dimly-lit room, talking in a gravelly voice, telling the story of Solomon the elephant, a wedding gift from a king to an archduke, and the long journey that brought him from Portugal through the Alps and finally to Vienna.

Like any good grandfather, Saramago wanders from point to point while telling his tale, musing and meandering. In the middle of the story he may take a few sentences to ruminate whimsically about the nature of royalty or the use of specific language or even his own role in the narrative itself. For this reason, 'The Elephant's Journey' is probably not for everyone. Those who like their tales straight and to the point should pass this one by, as it will be more frustrating than rewarding. Even though I enjoyed it overall, I did find myself occasionally wishing he would get back to the point (again, much like a grandson may feel about his overly verbose grandfather).

However, Saramago does have a good story to tell here and he tells it well. His use of language is (as always) beautiful, and his sense of observation unique and intricate. In the final analysis 'The Elephant's Journey' feels like a fable, a story told and retold so many times that its more fanciful notes fit right in with the elements of realism, and a moral sensibility that holds true from beginning to end.

With the release of this book comes the sad news of Saramago's passing. Even though he has at least one more book to offer us after this one, there was a passage near the end of 'The Elephant's Journey' that seemed particularly fitting to me.

"we will not see them in this theater again, but such is life, the actors appear, then leave the stage, as is only fitting, it's what usually and always will happen sooner or later, they say their part, then disappear through the door at the back, the one that opens onto the garden...the curtain has fallen and will not rise again."

'The Elephant's Journey' feels like a story heard late at night, as we drift off to sleep, told by someone old enough to be comfortable telling such stories to younger ears, with a few side-trips along the way. As the story ends and we are drifting off to sleep, grandfather Jose quietly steps out of the room and closes the door behind him.

A whimsical Saramago
By J. Silva
While some have found this novel to be fluffier and of less import than Saramago's other works, I found it classic Saramago with a twist. As he so often does, Saramago has studied history and interpreted it to suit a modern perspective, in this case with the true tale of an elephant and his Mahout bound on a challenging trip across Europe. Here, humor is at the forefront of Saramago's writing style, rather than an undercurrent. All the creatures in the book, both human and animal, are viewed with the same sidelong, amused glance that examines closely while seeming to only mock. Few creatures emerge unscathed, particularly those with a heightened view of themselves -- monarchs and priests, commandants and politicians.

At the center of the tale is Solomon, the elephant of the title, a hairy, bumpy Indian elephant that was a gift to the king and queen of Portugal two years prior. Solomon has languished, neglected, forgotten, and dirty, with only the company of his driver and caretaker (mahout) Subhro, until the queen decides that the animal would make a wonderful wedding gift for the archduke Maximilian and his bride. Each laborious step of the ensuing journey, first across Portugal and Spain to the archduke, then across the Mediterranean and the unforgiving terrain of Northern Italy to the archduke's home in Austria, provides Saramago opportunity after opportunity to examine the human condition. And everything is examined, from the reaction of peasants and townsfolk to the elephant to the arrogance of an archduke who insists on renaming both the elephant (from Solomon to Suleiman) and his mahout (from Subhro to the ludicrous Fritz) to suit his idiosyncratic tastes.

An important undercurrent in the book is the fear engendered by the Inquisition, which is in its full fury in the 16th century, the time of the novel. Hypocrisy, the usual partner of overweening and dogmatic piety, is examined from many angles, perhaps the most telling when a parish priest demands that Subhro force Solomon to kneel in front of the town's church to create a "miracle" that will raise the profile of both the parish and the priest in the eyes of the church hierarchy. It is no accident that that very hierarchy is meeting not far from the parish in Trent, and is on the itinerary of the archduke, Solomon, and their entourage.

Saramago's writing style, much discussed, takes a little patience to settle into, but once mastered, the lack of capitalization and punctuation, and the plethora of run-on sentences, becomes enjoyable to read.

My only quibble with the book is toward the end, where the traveling party must safely traverse two dangerous passes that are covered in snow and ice. Saramago writes the first of the perilous passages with tension appropriate to the peril faced by a pachyderm and Indian mahout unfamiliar with extreme cold and ice. When the second pass is faced, with similar conditions, the passage seems redundant, and the reader feels more anxious to finish reading than anxious for the safety of the characters.

In all other ways, however, this is a satisfying read, challenging beyond its surface humor, stirring the conscience to consider the ways humans have always taken advantage of one another and the animals in their care.

`Well, it isn't every day that an elephant appears in our lives.'
By Jennifer Cameron-Smith
In 1551, King João III of Portugal gave the Archduke Maximilian of Austria an unusual wedding present: an elephant named Solomon. The elephant's journey from Lisbon to Vienna was witnessed and remarked on by ordinary people as well as by scholars and historians. From this, José Saramago has crafted a delightful short novel.

Solomon and his keeper, Subhro, have been living a dismal existence forgotten in a corner of the palace grounds. When King João and his queen decide that the elephant would be an appropriate wedding gift, Subhro is given two new suits of clothes and Solomon an overdue scrub.

Solomon and Subhro travel together on foot from Lisbon to Valladolid, to Catalonia, by sea to Genoa, on to Venice, over the Alps, arriving at Innsbruck on the feast day of Epiphany in 1552, before continuing by barge down the rivers Inn and Danube toward Vienna. For part of the journey, they are accompanied by the Archduke, his new wife and the royal guard. The Archduke renames Subhro `Fritz' and Solomon proves himself to be a natural sailor. Together, the party traverses a continent dived by both the Reformation and civil wars. They travel through the cities of Northern Italy, including Trento where the Council of Trent is in session. They travel at an unhurried pace, largely dictated by Solomon. And wherever they go, they encounter people with various interpretations of the sudden appearance of an elephant in their lives.

`Like magicians, elephants have their secrets.'

One of my favourite passages involves Subhro discussing religion with the Portuguese captain. The discussion is overheard by peasants from a nearby village who, following what they have heard come to a conclusion which they share with their priest: `God is an elephant, father.' The priest replies that `God is in all his creatures.' This leads to an argument which the priest settles by promising to exorcise the elephant. The next day, he pretends to exorcise the elephant but because he is only pretending (or so we might believe) the elephant punishes him - by kicking him gently.

This is a delightful and funny story.

`Given time, everything in the universe will dovetail perfectly with everything else.'

Best Teacher Support
By Karalee Pugmire
I don't usually purchase Teacher's editions, but my school hasn't had a textbook fund in years and our textbooks are over 12 years old. With this book as a supplement, I have been able to get great ideas for teaching texts in the old book but in a Common Core way. There are ideas for warm-ups that actually teach the kids a skill, fantastic sections for struggling readers where you can close read or only read small portions of standard texts. There is even a suggested list of texts to read in each unit. The Common Core Standard focused questions and teaching helps are really great for helping kids meet these standards, even if I have to type out all of the questions myself. I wish I could have bought the resources that went with this book, but the book on it's own has been a tremendous help.
