Great practice book
By Jackie A.
I like the Go Math series. My older one, who is now in high school used the same series, and now it's his little brother's turn. This is just a practice book; the kids cut them up and bring them home for weekly homework. I got the practice book for 1st graders last year, and it was a big help. There are no lessons here, only activities kids can do. So if you are unfamiliar with models and different methods of calculation, youtube will be your bestfriend.

Great addition to homeschool curriculum
By Tawnik
I needed a Mathematics workbook for our homeschool curriculum. I was very hesitant on the Common Core Mathematics curriculum but my children attended public school up until this year, when I decided that due some impending changing factors in our lives I would homeschool. I didn't want to mess up what they had already learned in public school, and possibly make it harder for them later if they decided to return to public school by not continuing with the Common Core Mathematics. When I first looked over the lessons it didn't seem to me as though they were repetitive enough for them to actually get it. But now that we have been using them for a few weeks I realized that it is not really that difficult to get and my children are breezing through the lessons with ease.

I use this book on a weekly basis when creating lesson plans. I test my students every friday using a worksheet from this book covering the standard we have been working on. It is great from my to look to see if my students have mastered, understood, or struggled on the current Common Core Math Standard.

The Back Chamber, by Donald Hall

The first full-length volume of poems in a decade by the former poet laureate of the United States

In The Back Chamber, Donald Hall illuminates the evocative, iconic objects of deep memory—a cowbell, a white stone perfectly round, a three-legged milking stool—that serve to foreground the rich meditations on time and mortality that run through his remarkable new collection. While Hall’s devoted readers will recognize many of his long-standing preoccupations—baseball, the family farm, love, sex, and friendship—what will strike them as new is the fierce, pitiless poignancy he reveals as his own life’s end comes into view. The Back Chamber is far from being death-haunted, but rather is lively, irreverent, erotic, hilarious, ironic, and sly—full of the life-affirming energy that has made Donald Hall one of America’s most popular and enduring poets.

Review
"For the reader boiling in triple-digit SoCal heat at the end of the summer, Donald Hall's "The Back Chamber: Poems" arrives like a sudden cloudburst and shower of cooling rain. . .A former U.S. poet laureate, Hall has always had this elemental power — to vividly evoke his particular New England climate and geography so that it can't be mistaken for any other — but what is more unexpected in this new collection of poems, his 16th, is passion."--LA Times

"If the poems in it are relatively somber, they’re equally witty, consummately well-crafted." --Booklist, STARRED review

"Featuring moving, amusing, musical poems about love, aging, and baseball, this work will have broad appeal and is recommended for all collections."—Library Journal

"The former U.S. poet laureate reaches his 20th book in unmistakably honest form..." --Publishers Weekly

From Booklist
The fourth book in the Life as We Knew It series focuses on Jon, younger brother to Miranda and friend of Julie from the previous titles. It’s four years since a meteor crashed into the moon, killing billions and changing everything. Now that things have somewhat settled down, the remains of society are stratifying. Jon is in Sexton with his stepmother and baby half-brother; because of the passes they possess, life is better. Jon’s mother, Miranda, and her husband, Alex, live nearby as grubs, the worker bees whose endlessly long days of bitterly hard labor sustain the surrounding areas. And Julie? She’s dead. In fact, it’s her pass that has allowed Jon to live in Sexton, but thanks to events surrounding her death, his privileges engender considerable guilt. Then Jon learns exactly how Julie died, and everything is turned upside down once more. The pampered and weak Jon is not a particularly likable character, but in some ways that intensifies the story, as the moral choices he makes become successively more complicated. Pfeffer’s well-written take on what life might be as it returns to “normal” is sometimes brutal and always depressingly real. Grades 7-10. --Ilene Cooper

Unbelievable society weakens fourth "Last Survivors" installment
By Kathy Cunningham
THE SHADE OF THE MOON is the fourth in Susan Beth Pfeffer's "The Last Survivors" series, which focuses on what happens to the world when an asteroid crashes into the moon, moving its orbit closer to Earth. The first book, LIFE AS WE KNEW IT, was Miranda Evans story of her family's devastating experiences in Pennsylvania, told through journal entries. The second book, THE DEAD AND GONE, focused on Alex Morales and his family in New York City. The third book, THIS WORLD WE LIVE IN, united both families as Miranda and Alex fell in love. Now, with THE SHADE OF THE MOON, the story continues in Tennessee, where Miranda and Alex live in a poverty-stricken town called White Birch and her younger brother Jon lives with their stepmother Lisa and her son Gabe in an "enclave" called Sexton. Billions of people have died in the four years since the asteroid hit the moon, and the world that remains is nothing at all like the one left behind. The story in this fourth installment focuses mainly on Jon's budding romance with Sarah, the daughter of the enclave's new doctor, as well as Jon's struggle to hold onto his safe place in the enclave while not betraying the rest of his family.

Apparently, society has become divided into two distinct classes - the "clavers," who live in the protected, affluent "enclaves," and the "grubs," who do the manual labor and live in "grub towns" like White Birch. Jon, Lisa, and Gabe were lucky enough to get "slips" (passes that enable them to live in an enclave town), but Alex, Miranda, and her mom Laura weren't that lucky - they are "grubs," living lives very different from the one Jon is living. Clavers have access to good food, medical care, nice homes, and education for their children. Grubs work as servants in claver homes, or in the greenhouses where food is grown, or in the mines. Jon is torn between his nice life in Sexton and his mom and sister's squalid existence in White Birch. It doesn't help that Miranda is pregnant and still expected to work ten hours a day in the greenhouses, or that new girl Sarah is a "grub-lover" - she and her doctor father are determined to do whatever they can to make life easier for the disenfranchised, and this is not at all popular with the others in the enclave. If Jon goes along with Sarah, he'll make enemies in Sexton which could risk his and Lisa's chances to remain there. But if he doesn't, he'll lose Sarah.

There are two problems with THE SHADE OF THE MOON, making it a much less successful novel than LIFE AS WE KNEW IT. First, the relationship between Jon and Sarah just isn't developed enough to make it either believable or compelling. He meets her at the start of the book, they have lunch together at school, they sit together on the bus, and then they're trading kisses. There's nothing to explain why they're attracted to each other, much less why they fall "in love" so quickly. Since this relationship is at the heart of everything that happens in the course of the novel, the lack of any real connection between them (or any believable chemistry) is problematic.

The second problem is the society Pfeffer has created in this book - the clear division of society into the clavers (or "haves") and the grubs (or "have-nots") is a bit too over-the-top to be believable. Only four years have passed since the asteroid hit the moon, and all of these characters have clear memories of what life was like before. It makes no sense that things would have devolved so quickly into a hostile environment in which the majority of the remaining population has become virtual slave labor for the privileged few. And it makes even less sense that everyone seems to comfortable with this system. No one objects. No one wants to fight for equality. When Sarah suggests that some of the kids in her class do their required volunteer work at a grub clinic in White Birch, they delight in calling her "grub-lover," one girl spits on her, and they start chanting "grubby, grubby, grubby" while their teacher laughs. Jon and his male friends routinely spend their free time in White Birch getting drunk and having sex with grub girls (who will sleep with anyone for a bar of soap). Grub servants are mistreated and overworked, the grub miners are worked to death, and grub babies are stolen from their mothers and given to infertile claver couples to raise. It's very difficult to believe that such a society could have developed in just four years. And if you can't believe in the society, the story just doesn't work.

The best part of THE SHADE OF THE MOON - the thing that saves it from being a total waste of time - is Jon's character. This is a seventeen-year-old boy who begins, through the course of the novel, to realize just how much of a coward he really is. It may have started with what happened to Julie in the previous book, but it continues in his inability to stand up for Sarah against his friends, or to protect his mother and sister from the clavers who hurt them. Jon is a flawed character, and Pfeffer definitely gets her readers to both identify with him and wonder whether their decisions in such a world would be any different than his. Would any of us risk our cushy, comfortable lives to stand up to injustice? It's the kind of question that young people need to consider.

Unfortunately, this isn't a very successful novel. I loved LIFE AS WE KNEW IT, and I enjoyed elements of the next two books. But I'm not convinced that any of the sequels were really necessary. LIFE AS WE KNEW IT worked because it was a small story, about one girl's experience during a natural disaster. At the end of that novel, Pfeffer affirmed the human spirit and our need for each other. It's very hard to understand how, in just four short years, the human spirit was conquered and greed and hatred took its place. If you've read the other three books and want to know what happens to these characters, then you might want to read this one. But it isn't a book that works well on its own. There will be more books in this series - the ending of THE SHADE OF THE MOON sets up the next installment - but LIFE AS WE KNEW IT really does stand alone. For me, this one didn't work.

Difficult to read.
By K.
I had such a hard time with this book. "Life As We Knew It" was hands-down one of the best books I've read, it was so fresh and thought provoking and realistic. It was terrifying and heart-warming, and has stayed with me in the years since I read it. I was 25 when I read it, too, so I was far from a naive impressionable youth. The next two books that came after it were decent enough, but never quite captured the thrill of the first book. When I saw that this 4th installation was coming out I jumped at the chance to read it. At first it was exciting (and a little confusing) catching up with the characters I had come to love... and I quickly realized that this story was a departure from the others. I wish this book hadn't been written. It just ruins the perfection of the original. The society that is built in The Shade of The Moon is difficult to believe, and the character and relational development is sorely lacking. If, like me, you've read the other books and are curious to see what happens to the character you loved, please take my advice and don't get this. JUST SKIP IT. You'll be much happier with how things were at the end of the 3rd book, trust me.

Disappointing 4th Book
By Parajunkee
PJV Quickie: Susan Beth Pfeffer's much anticipated fourth installment in her "The Last Survivors" series, was highly anticipated by this reader, but unfortunately wasn't all that I had expected. We ended the third book with hope and the fourth book just crushed that right out of me. I think this fourth book was probably a mistake for the series, I was excited to hear the Pfeffer was writing another Survivors novel, but upon reading it, I was disappointed. The first three books were so good and this one just blew that all to smithereens.

REVIEW: THE SHADE OF THE MOON is from Jon's point of view, Jon is Miranda's younger brother and was always shown as a bit selfish in the other three books. While mom and sister are starving to death, Jon is complaining about his food portions. His mom continually sacrificed for him, including right up to the end, but the child never seemed to realize what those sacrifices meant and showed very little gratitude. I'm explaining this to you, because it is what my frame-of-mind was, when I went into this book. Now you have Jon a few years later, in high school and living it up in what is call The Clavers area of his new town.

The Clavers are basically the privileged few, they have their town sectioned off with purification in all the apartments and houses and each Claver has domestics that serve them. Jon and Lisa were allowed entry into the Enclave, with the baby Gabe, because of the passes that Alex had picked up in New York city in the second novel. Miranda, Laura and Alex all sacrifice so new mom Lisa, young tween Jon and baby Gabe can live a better life. They now live as Clavers, classified as "slips" because they slipped through with their passes, instead of going through the initial triage of the town's foundation, when all non-essentials were booted out and only people that could better the community were allowed in.

Outside of the Enclave exists the Grub towns, where the people that do the hard-labor and domestic work live. Miranda, Alex and Laura are all relegated to living in Grub town, Miranda is a domestic, Alex a bus driver and Laura a teacher. They have just the basics to live off of, while Jon is allowed to go to high school, play soccer and be a regular kid. At the start of this novel he is no better then he was in any of the other novels. He has an inflated sense of self, hanging around ridiculous other boys who are nasty characters. In the beginning they burn down the Grub school just to "show those Grubs."

Jon shows very little back-bone throughout the novel, even his little act of rebellion, a romance with the daughter of Grub Town doctor, Sarah is hidden. They meet in secret because if his friends find out they are dating, it might destroy his tenuous hold on their society. His friends believe Sarah's father pushed out a prominent Enclave doctor for the position and that they are grub sympathizers. Even the relationship between the two characters is an insta-love. They just begin secretly dating and sneaking around. They fight about their hidden status before Pfeffer even established a "love" with the reader. It was very poorly constructed and conveyed no titillation on my end.

Finally, the world that is constructed, just seems like Pfeffer was reaching for a dystopian setting, when her novel should clearly still be in its apocalypse infancy. There has only been a few years since the asteroid hit and here we have this highly developed dystopian landscape of oppression, slave-labor and privileged few. I found it quite unbelievable that a society could bloom like this so quickly, that people that were in a normal American, democratic society could suddenly treat a group of people so poorly and have the mass majority okay with it. We are not talking a band of mercenaries or group of tyrants that have banded together, this is a whole city of women, children and men, families that as a whole have suddenly come to view people living outside of their society as beneath them in a few short years, no empathy or concern. Characters like Sarah, who are trying to help these "grubs" are treated poorly just because of their socially conscious view-point.

This works in an apocalypse novel when it's a band of religious zealots that have banded together, or escaped convicts, but this is set in a "repaired" society setting, which just didn't work.

I hate to bash on this novel so much, especially having been such a BIG fan of the other books. I believe LIFE AS WE KNEW IT is one of the best apocalypse novels out there and everyone should read it. But, this one, just put a damper in the series for me. You pair this bad dystopian setting with a very unlikeable character and it just left me feeling uncaring of where this novel was heading, the only thing that kept me reading was the small glimpses I got of Miranda and Alex, which were too few and far between. Especially with Jon's point of view to mess up things.

I know the point of this book was to redeem this boy in the end and be all huggy-kissy "oh finally he's seen the light." But, his persona throughout all four books was so devolved that any progression seemed forced. I think Pfeffer was torn in trying to deliver a stand-alone novel with a recurring character from the series. Maybe if I hadn't read the first three I might have liked Jon more, but as a fan of the series I feel cheated. His progression throughout this novel was not worth it.

Overall it saddens me to say that THE SHADE OF THE MOON was a disappointment and three years of anticipation of this novel feels like a joke. The only redeeming quality of this novel was the continuation of the story and Pfeffer's lovely writing style. If I didn't have such an investment with the series this would probably be a DNF.

Recommendations: Fans of apocalypse young adult novels and fans of the series. There is talk of sexual interaction, rape - so I would recommend a mature teen reader.

K-Gr 4–Her name is Flora, and she's a pig. She's curious and longs to explore beyond the perimeters of the pigpen. She dreams of going to Antarctica with the sled dogs on the farm and becoming a sled pig. When she is put in a crate onboard a ship, she sees the expedition as an opportunity while the crew views her as potential pork chops. Then they are shipwrecked and readers will root for spunky Flora as she discovers just how brave and needed she can be. Simple black-line drawings add a welcoming charm. Told in the voice of a seasoned storyteller, this novel has chapters that will work perfectly for sharing aloud with younger children or as a read-alone for more competent readers. Flora will encourage every listener to dream of being their best self. Move over Wilbur and Babe, there's a new pig in town.–Helen Foster James, University of California at San Diegoα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Even as a piglet, plucky Flora knows that her destiny lies outside the pen. After watching sled dogs training, she dreams of joining a sled team. In this satisfying chapter book, one wildly improbable (but somehow convincing) event leads to another. Taken aboard a ship for some mysterious purpose, Flora befriends Oscar the sled dog and Aleric the cabin boy. She and Sophia the cat team up to kill off their common enemy: rats. Shipwrecked off Antarctica, Flora saves the captain’s life (and her own bacon), but starvation looms and the crew’s survival depends on an unlikely sled team: Flora, Oscar, Aleric, and Sophia. Reinhardt’s spirited drawings, shaded with crosshatching, add considerably to the book’s charm. Described as a teacher and a storyteller, Kurtz shows a good sense of pacing in his first novel. There’s humor as well as heart, grit as well as tenderness, in the telling of this Antarctic adventure tale. Recommended for reading aloud. Grades 3-6. --Carolyn Phelan

Delightful tale in the style of a classic
By Sunny Sewing Honeybee
Flora has far more energy and spunk than her lazy brothers, and a taste for adventure. Yet the pig pen offers little opportunity for anything new and interesting . . . until she escapes and meets up with the dogs on the farm, while they're in training, pulling a cart. That gives her a dream: Being a sled-pig!

Wanting to head off on an adventure, she later intentionally gets caught in her pen by humans. She thinks she's off on an expedition to the Antarctic, although her guess about why she's on the ship there is much different than the humans' intention (bacon, ham, etc.). She learns how to help hunt for rats on the ship, befriends a cat and a boy, all the while hoping that she'll eventually be leading a team of dogs across the South Pole. Some unexpected turns of events lead to Flora proving herself as a South Pole pig.

This could possibly be compared to _Charlotte's Web_ in how Wilbur becomes more than just a mere pig, but I was reminded of the lesser known book, _Babe, the Gallant Pig_, where Babe becomes a sheep-herding pig, because it also involves friendship between a pig and dog and a working relationship with a human that thus deems the pig something more than food. The fact that this story has been done before in other fictional pig books could beg the question, "Do we need another one?" My answer is, "yes!" That fact doesn't detract from this being an excellent story with a likeable character. Flora is relatively clueless (she has no idea what pigs are generally used for until told), but she's full of a zeal for life, optimism, and a knack for making friends--dog, cat, and human--that all together make her really likeable and someone to cheer for. I really enjoyed this book, and think Flora deserves a literary life filled with adventures.

Cute story--my kids loved it!
By Novel Teen
This book is about a pig who wants to pull dogsleds. Flora is funny and entertaining. Flora has always been adventuresome. She wants more out of life than being stuck in a pigpen. And she gets her chance when she's sold to some guys who are headed to the Antarctic. Little does she know she has been bought for food. She thinks this will be her big chance to be a sled pig.

This was a cute story. My kids loved it. Flora is a positive character, always looking on the bright side, willing to try most anything. She meets some lazy cats and befriends any creature she speaks with, except the rats. My daughter loved the pictures. There aren't many, but every so often there is a black and white sketch like those on the cover. This was a fun book with a happy ending and good morals too. At 278 pages, it might be a little long for young, reluctant readers. Other than that, this book is a keeper.

Incredibly cute story that teaches about dreaming big
By Amazon Customer
Flora wants an adventure, but first she must figure out a way out of her pigpen. Adventure comes her way she she ends up on a ship bound for Antarctica. Being a pig going places on a ship isn't adventure enough for Flora though, she wants to be a sled pig. She might even get her chance to be more than breakfast when the shipwrecks and the crew is stranded.

Flora and her unlikely friends (a cat and a dog) must figure out how to keep Flora from being breakfast and how to survive long enough for the rescue team to arrive.

This book was super cute. It has both funny and serious moments in it that kept this adult reader entertained. I thought Flora was a wonderful character and enjoyed how her voice was different from both that of the dog and cat characters too. I liked how the story was about one pig's determination to be more than what life says she should be. Yet, that wasn't all, it also had a component of teaching children the importance of teamwork and friends come in all forms. From the little boy that cars for Flora and the other animals to the cat and dog finally becoming friends too. It made the story fun with a purpose. 4 Stars.

Good for review
By Jennifer
The book is upside down when I got it. The book was simple enough for practice, and kept one at home for the handy simple question, and review, but it's not detail enough for the exam, special on the final exam.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive: So You Want To Reap Some Souls: A Grim's Checklist

by Mort Bartleby, Mayor of Croak

Think you've got what it takes to be a Grim? Well, you, my friend, are delusional. But for the moment, let's pretend that you're remotely qualified to join the ranks of the Grimsphere. Before you set out on your first shift you must take stock of your supplies, as there are a few things no Killer or Culler can reap without:

Scythe

Made out of rock, gem, or mineral, each handheld scythe is tailored specifically to the Grim who wields it. The Swiss Army Knife of the Grimsphere, your scythe will allow you to gain access to the ether, instantly travel across the country, and breach the space-time continuum faster than you can say "space-time continuum."

Standard issue black hoodie

Lightweight, durable, thermoregulated, and stylish, the black hoodie is the Grim's uniform of choice. Not only is it comfortable, but its pockets can hold dozens of souls. Plus, it makes a statement. (That statement is: I kill people.)

Vessels

You're going to need something to put all those souls in. (You didn't think you'd just shove them into your hoodie pocket like loose change, did you? What is this, amateur hour?) Vessels are the best tools for the job--small white orbs spun from the fibers of a black widow spider; they're strong enough to protect souls from the harshest conditions.

Cuff

A metal band worn around the wrist that is used to communicate with other Grims. No touch screen, no ringtones, no apps. Just cold hard iron.

Your partner

Reaping souls is a two-person job. The Killer releases the soul from the dead body, and the Culler collects that soul and places it into a Vessel. You partner is the person you will be with for ten hours a day, seven days a week. You will get to know them better than anyone you've ever met. You will be able to finish each other's sentences. You will know what the other person is thinking before they think it. But you will not fall in love with them. No matter how dreamy their eyes may be.

And above all, a strong stomach

I'll not mince words. As a Grim, you will see decapitations. Disembowlings. Amputations. Explosions. Cancer. Drownings. Fires. Car wrecks. Poison. Stabbings. And more blood than you've ever thought possible.

So. You in?

Review

Praise for Croak

"Go ahead and die laughing, knowing that the safe transport of your mortal soul will be the summer job of a sweetheart teen with godlike power and discipline problems. A lot of books make me wish I could live within their pages, but I wouldn't mind dying in this one."
—Adam Rex, author of Fat Vampire

"Creepy and hilarious."
—VOYA, 4Q, 5P

Praise for Scorch

"An amusing blend of whimsy and humor with serious drama and blood."
—Kirkus Reviews

"Characters are always as clever as we wish we were. . . . An irresistible blend of impending doom, irreverent humor, hormone-fueled make-out sessions, and creative world-building make this sequel stronger than its predecessor and will leave readers dying for the next book."
—School Library Journal

Praise for Rogue

"A gut-wrenching, laugh-out-loud, gritty, honest and brave ending to an appealing trilogy."
—Kirkus

...A juvenile delinquent is now in charge of harvesting your immortal soul... Huzzah!...
By H. Bala
If you need to catch a breath after epic YA reads like THE HUNGER GAMES and READY PLAYER ONE, if you're looking for something lighter in tone, maybe something fraught with the sassy, then Gina Damico has got the remedy. CROAK is her debut novel, and it's promising enough that I'm down for its upcoming sequel (titled SCORCH).

Damico takes a huge risk that readers won't sympathize with her central character, and, no, I'm not sure the risk pans out. 16-year-old New Yorker Lex Bartleby is hard to like. Once a straight A student and sweet and sunny, two years ago, unfathomably, she underwent a troubling change. Today, in her austere black hoodie, Lex terrorizes her fellow students as the school bully. When her latest transgression (biting a classmate) lands her in the principal's office, her parents have had enough. They ship Lex off to upstate New York to stay at her weird Uncle Mort's farm for the summer, hoping that hard work will impact her positively.

Except that farming isn't Uncle Mort's occupation. In the peculiar village of Croak, which happens to be a portal to the Afterlife, Mort is only one in a thriving population of Grim Reapers, and he aims to groom his niece in the family business. Luckily, Lex already has a black hoodie which, as it turns out, is the everyday uniform of a Grim.

Apparently, nursing anger management issues qualifies one for the Junior Reaper gig. One is even handed a mystic scythe. Lex learns she has an affinity for extracting a soul from its corpse. And, to her surprise, she finds herself fitting into Croak's unconventional community and bonding with her teenaged peers, all of whom are Junior Grims harboring a troubled past. And what's YA lit without teen romance? Lex is partnered with an aggravating (but cute) boy named Driggs who shares lodgings with her at Uncle Mort's. He's the Culler to her Killer (FYI: a Killer separates the soul from the body; a Culler gathers the soul). Driggs and Lex's often chippy interactions provide some of the more entertaining bits in the book.

Gina Damico keeps the morbidness at bay by infusing a playful tone into her narrative. I liked her fun take on the Croak bureaucracy and her playful vision of the Afterlife or, rather, the atrium to the Afterlife (mortals aren't allowed past the atrium). But Lex's summer on-the-job training isn't just frolic and good times and a platform for a gradual attitude adjustment. One day Lex and Driggs stumble onto an unknown serial killer within their ranks, a Grim without morals who takes pleasure in murdering victims who weren't yet destined to die.

As the town of Croak continues to be confounded, the serial killer amps up his activity and begins to target the Grims themselves. The writer presents an intriguing character beat for her protagonist. When it's revealed that the killer is going after mortals who have committed deplorable crimes, Lex is torn. Her thirst for justice compels her to reluctantly admire the mysterious serial killer. But how far will she take this admiration?

The writer lulls you with her easy-breezy writing. I wasn't ready for when she tightens the screws late in the game, when the bright and upbeat tone gives way to dramatic plot twists. Your heart may even break a bit. Gina Damico's first YA novel may at times suffer a bit from a case of being too cute. But, ultimately, CROAK is a nice read. You'll chuckle and probably roll your eyes. Hopefully, you'll also appreciate Damico's neat worldbuilding and perhaps even admire her rampant and unapologetic pun assault. And, near the end, she may upend you. During the final 34 pages, $#!+ got real! It's certainly driven my interest level way up, and now the sequel Scorch can't come soon enough.

My summer vacation - the Grim Reaper version
By Becky (in NOLA)
Lex's family cannot deal with her anymore, she's angry, lashing out (figuratively and literally getting into fights), her school wants to expel her, her classmates are afraid of her, and Lex doesn't even know why she's acting so horrible. Her parents solution is to send her to her Uncle Mort's for the summer. Lex leaves her twin sister and parents reluctantly, only to find out Uncle Mort is a lot stranger than anyone realized.

The story could be cheesy, grim reapers in training, death, souls, the afterlife, but instead Gina Damico has created an interesting world, one in which Lex finally fits in, after a few false starts. The supporting characters are interesting and well fleshed out, from Uncle Mort (who has a lot more back story that will probably come out in sequels), to Driggs, and the other reapers.

Croak is full of dark humor but without falling into the usual traps of teenage romances and girls suddenly finding they have magical powers without consequences. Teens and older people will enjoy this book. I left it in the bathroom and my 56 year old husband read it and enjoyed it. The writing is good enough to appeal to a broad audience age wise, using unusual surroundings and making the supernatural believable.

The book does end on a cliffhanger, but it was complete enough, it wasn't one of those "she's hanging off the mountain" perils of Pauline cliffhangers, just a larger arc that will continue into the second book. I will definitely be buying book two. I went to the author page to see if Ms. Damico had written any other books but she hasn't, I hope she is a fast writer, can't wait to find out what happens next in Croak.

good premise, bad execution
By melreads
The premise of this book is cool. The character designs sound neat (who doesn't love a motorcycle-riding, weird experimental sciencist, take-it-in-stride, Actually, I Own This Town uncle named Mort?), but unfortunately, by the middle of the book, every single character was exactly the same. I mean it; they all used the same phrases, seemed to react to everything in the same way, and I had to keep backtracking to the intro scenes to try and remember who was who. Not that they aren't physically diverse, and we're told over and over that they have different personalities. For example, one girl is described as a chatterbox. Whenever she starts talking, people roll their eyes and try to interrupt her and make jokes about how much she talks. But if you actually go through and compare how long her little speeches are compared to when literally anyone else in the book talks...well, she probably soliloquies less - mostly because she gets interrupted constantly.

The only people who are in any way distinguishable are the two bullies in Croak, and it's sort of hilarious that a grown man and grown woman seem to live for the moments when they can stalk up to a group of teenagers and call them 'stupid.' that's it. That's all they do. They are ugly and they glare a lot and they are virtually identical in everything but name and gender, and all they do, despite ostensibly being very important upper management, is show up at odd moments when the teenagers are sitting in a diner or in a park or whatever, and call them all idiots and slackers. And then the heroine says something that isn't really witty but everyone reacts like it's a TOTAL BURN, DUDE, and the bullies stomp off, defeated.

The plot about the people dying of unknown causes (which is a problem when you're a reaper and it's your job to know the cause) isn't too boring or predictable, I'll give it that. But by the middle of the book, I just couldn't be bothered to care.
