Great brain food as always, but not quite the best of the recent vintages
By cs211
Every year I look forward to diving into the Best American Essays volume. It is usually the most intelligent and educational book that I read all year, which is why I call this series "brain food". This year is no exception, although I wouldn't quite rate this year's volume as highly as others. I still strongly urge readers to give it a try because if you actually make it all the way through it, your brain will feel as though it had a good workout.

Guest Editor David Brooks appears to have utilized a fairly broad definition of "essay" for this volume. Some of the selected works are what I would call "traditional essays": first-person narratives in which the experiences, emotions and thoughts of the author dominate, such as Wesley Yang's "Paper Tigers", in which he confesses to being an illegal immigrant and explains exactly how he has gone about concealing his nationality. Others selections are dispassionate fact-based articles about a topic, such as Alan Lightman's "The Accidental Universe", which discusses some of the latest scientific thinking about dark energy and the laws of physics. Because of this spectrum of essay types, and because the selections are organized by the author's last name, you don't know what you are going to read next as you traverse this volume. One way to view this book is that you are reading a selection of some of the best non-fiction magazine articles published in the U.S. in the past year.

That said, the best essay by far in this volume falls into the highly personalized essay category: Jonathan Franzen's "Farther Away", his account of a life-threatening solo journey to the frontier of civilization that he undertook to help understand and deal with the suicide of his friend (and the Guest Editor for the 2007 volume of this series), David Foster Wallace. Franzen reveals much about both Wallace and himself in this essay, some through what he says and some through what he does. Wallace was a brilliant writer and much lauded by some, and while I still need to make my way through his voluminous masterpiece "Infinite Jest", Franzen's essay certainly helps readers understand this complex individual and what his writings and actions say about himself and our society.

Other top-notch essays, in my opinion:

-- Marcia Angell's "The Crazy State of Psychiatry", which falls on the fact-based article end of the spectrum and which provides a skeptical assessment of the current state of the psychiatric profession and its (over)reliance on psychoactive drugs. Later in the volume Lauren Slater's "Killing My Body to Save My Mind" provides a first-person view of a patient undergoing an intense drug therapy to deal with mental illness that, perhaps, illustrates some of Angell's points. Interestingly, Slater was the 2006 Guest Editor for this series - one can only imagine what fate awaits this year's editor, David Brooks. Perhaps guest editing this series is an even worse fate than the Sports Illustrated cover jinx.

-- Miah Arnold's "You Owe Me", which attempts to explain how a teacher of terminally ill children deals with that tragic scenario, and does so in a very humanistic way.

-- Joseph Epstein's "Duh, Boring", which provides some interesting historical background and current-day views on what may be solely a First World affliction.

-- Sandra Tsing Loh's "The Bitch is Back", which may unveil more than you need or want to know about women's late middle-age "change of life", but does so in an intense, compelling way.

The one major dud, in my opinion, was Richard Sennett's "Humanism". After lecturing against academic essays in his introduction, I was surprised to see that Brooks' included this one, which is too abstract and academic for the average reader to know whether the author is stating truths or is merely scoring semantic points.

I almost always get more out of The Best American Essays than I do from The Best American Short Stories, yet the short stories volume outsells the essays volume by quite a bit. That is unfortunate. If you are not frightened off by the word "essay", which often induces dreadful school-age memories among readers, by all means get this volume and feed your brain.

iPads and minority issues
By Caraculiambro
Another near-excellent collection of essays from the folks who do it best. This year, it seemed, the editor wanted to explore the themes of technology, boredom, and the quality of life. But in the end, as is inevitable these days, the volume ends up getting swamped by essays concerned with gender and ethnic issues. I don't think it takes much to choose the essays for one of these collections. Basically you've just got to say, Have we got a gay issues essay? Check. A feminism essay? Check. Minority issues? Check. And so on.

THE FOUL REIGN OF SELF-RELIANCE, by Benjamin Anastas. The author asserts that Emerson's philosophy of self-reliance is naïve and unhelpful. He doesn't really make a case; the "essay" is really just an undeveloped statement. Probably the worst essay of the bunch.

THE CRAZY STATE OF PSYCHIATRY, by Marcia Angell. Author discusses how crazy it is that everybody these days seems to be diagnosed with some sort of mental disorder, and how psychiatric treatments have nearly all become chemical-based.

YOU OWE ME, by Miah Arnold. One of the most painful essays in this collection: the thoughts of a woman who teaches creative writing to children with cancer.

EDWARD HOPPER AND THE GEOMETRY OF DESPAIR, by Geoffrey Bent. An appreciation of the compositional acumen of Edward Hopper, an American painter. The essay therefore seems focused but ultimately has nothing deeper to say than that he uses light and empty space well.

A BEAUTY, by Robert Boyers. A rumination on beauty being skin-deep. The author had a startlingly handsome friend who was something of a cad, etc.

THE GOOD SHORT LIFE, by Dudley Clendinen. Famous essay from a senior citizen who is willing to call it a life and simply die than prolong his life using all sorts of medicines and procedures.

VANISHING ACT, by Paul Collins. Tells the story surrounding the disappearance of a child prodigy, Barbara Follett, and what likely precipitated it.

INSATIABLE, by Mark Doty. Rumination on how Stoker's Dracula was supposedly based on Walt Whitman. The author has no hesitation in shoehorning his own homosexuality into these ruminations, including his experience with fisting (p. 81)! The most laughably inept essay of this bunch: if the author hadn't obtruded his sexual orientation into the mix, it's hard to see how this would have been given a second look.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? by Mark Edmundson. My favorite essay in this collection. Basically a Robert Hutchins-style argument that success in college is not the same thing as successfully getting an education. The only essay in this collection that I'll be re-reading.

DUH, BOR-ING, by Joseph Epstein. A rumination on the varieties and value of boredom.

FARTHER AWAY, by Jonathan Franzen. To my thinking, the most technically competent essay of the bunch, although not very memorable. Franzen seamlessly interweaves his mediations on the suicide of a friend with the story of how he took a bird-watching trip to Alexander Selkirk island.

CREATION MYTH, by Malcolm Gladwell. Not a remarkable essay. After assuring us that the story we commonly hear about Steve Jobs lifting the idea for a GUI from Xerox's PARC is not as simple as all that, Gladwell proceeds to look at the circumstances surrounding this famous "theft." Unfortunately, after reading the essay, you are left to conclude that, basically, it really was as simple as all that.

DR. DON, by Peter Hessler. A portrait of a pharmacist and town leader in a remote area on the Colorado-Utah border.

OBJECTS OF AFFECTION, by Ewa Hryniewicz-Yarbrough. A descendant of Poles whose belongings were stripped away during WWII reflects on the origin and value of the impulse to keep nostalgic items around the house.

GETTING SCHOOLED, by Garret Keizer. A public school teacher returns to the classroom after a hiatus of 15 years and reflects on how things have changed.

MY FATHER/MY HUSBAND, by David J. Lawless. A shockingly painful essay to read about Alzheimer's disease. Probably the most unforgettable of the bunch. Just searing.

THE ACCIDENTAL UNIVERSE, by Alan Lightman. A rumination on matters cosmological, such as dark matter and the possibility that our universe is only one of a virtually infinite number of universes.

THE BITCH IS BACK, by Sandra Tsing Loh. A rambling, annoyingly-voiced rumination on menopause. The author has no meaningful contributions to make on this topic, it seems to me, and seems to be writing merely to hear her own voice, which I found shrill, grating, and nearly incoherent.

HOW DOCTORS DIE, by Ken Murray. Points out how doctors themselves, at the end of their lives, typically forgo medical treatments that stress quantity of life over quality of life, and how the author hopes that he'll do the same. Not really an essay; just an observation.

OTHER WOMEN, by Francine Prose. The author's mature reflections on her involvement with a feminist consciousness-raising group in the early 70s, and what feminism means to her now.

HUMANISM, by Richard Sennett. Stuffy: a look a what humanism has meant through various ages. Flat and academic: doesn't really seem like it belongs in this collection.

KILLING MY BODY TO SAVE MY MIND, by Lauren Slater. The author recounts how her depression was lifted by a drug that causes her to gain a lot of weight.

OUTLAW, by Jose Antonio Vargas. A powerfully affecting essay about a productive, model American who doesn't have legal permission to reside in the U.S.

PAPER TIGERS, by Wesley Yang. Probably the most insightful essay of this bunch -- and the longest. An analysis of why Asians don't dominate American culture and business even though they have long dominated our classrooms.

The lost art of the essay: read, think, write
By Uncle John 5oh
The real truth behind non-fiction, is that you can't make it up--the emotions, the stories, the thoughts--the best fiction can do, at its very best, is approximate. Read these essays, and you will be touched, outraged, amused and above all jolted into thought. Read, think, and rebut if you don't agree or argue in support if you do--reading non-fiction may not make you smarter, but it will make your brain work--so readers; read, think and write--an essay really is thinking on paper.

All but the most mindless readers will find one story here that will speak to them in a way even the best fiction can't--try it and enjoy a new kind of read.

Mustache Baby, by Bridget Heos

When Baby Billy is born with a mustache, his family takes it in stride. They are reassured when he nobly saves the day in imaginary-play sessions as a cowboy or cop and his mustache looks good-guy great. But as time passes, their worst fears are confirmed when little Billy’s mustache starts to curl up at the ends in a suspiciously villainous fashion. Sure enough, “Billy’s disreputable mustache led him into a life of dreadful crime.” Plenty of tongue-in-cheek humor and cartoonish illustrations make this the perfect baby-shower gift for a mustachioed father-to-be.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 1-This nonsense picture book is about a baby who is born with a mustache. As Billy grows up, the mustache informs his various identities: cowboy, ringleader, Spanish painter, sword fighter, and man of the law. But then, it grows and curls and becomes a bad-guy mustache. Billy then becomes a cereal criminal, a bank robber, and a cat burglar, and gets thrown in jail. Fortunately, his parents are able to reassure him that everyone has a bad-mustache day. Billy becomes a good guy again and scoots off to play with his new neighbor, a little bearded guy. Digitally rendered illustrations are saturated matte cartoons. For the most part, they mirror the text, although the humor is often in the contradictions; while the narrator claims that "everyone loved having Officer Billy around," for example, his sister and brother glare at him for ruining their play. Quirky, silly fun.-Jennifer Miskec, Longwood University, Farmville, VAα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

From Booklist
It’s apparent right from the start: Baby Billy has been born with a mustache. When asked what it means, the nurse replies that it depends on “whether it’s a good-guy mustache or a bad-guy mustache.” At first, it’s good. He becomes a toddler lawman, catching thieves with their hands in the cookie jar. But as his mustache grows and curls up at the ends, Billy becomes bad. Very bad. Throughout, the text relies on puns that the intended audience may not catch as Billy becomes a cat burglar and then a cereal criminal. What children will delight in, however, is Ang’s sturdy digital artwork, which gives her characters the heft of wooden toys even as they zip around the page. The pictures wring every bit of fun and humor from the story, with Billy taking on many mustachioed personas including painter, pilot, and cowboy (good) as well as train robber (bad). The intriguingly designed book shows Billy from many angles, often on the move, sometimes behind (crib) bars, and full of personality. The surprise ending accents the fun. A mustached baby will surely make audiences howl during read-alouds. Preschool-Grade 1. --Ilene Cooper

It is such a cute story and a fun read; every little boy should own this!
By Shanna
My 3yr old found this at our local library and was so sad that we had to return it. He has had some attachments to a few books, however this was the first time I had seen him so upset about a book return. When he woke up Christmas morning, he was so happy to see that Santa brought him Mustache Baby!

Best. Ever.
By canusa
Best. Children's Book. Ever. I'll update this review if I come across one that is better. The hilarity of this book took both me and my child by surprise. As much fun for adults (if not more) than it is for your kids. Our 3-year-old loves this book so much that our 1-year-old is intrigued by it and steals the book any chance he gets. We've given the book as a gift about 6 times and it's a huge hit every time!

Mouse feels lower than low. His forest friends, including Badger, Hedgehog, Rabbit, and Mole all knock themselves out trying to cheer up the little guy, to no avail. In the end, all Mouse really needs is a hug! Jed Henry’s wonderful illustrations, in watercolor pastels and colored pencils, beautifully complement the spare text. Readers will love seeing all the exuberant animal antics in trees, ponds, and even underground tunnels as they try to distract their gloomy friend. A charming antidote for the blues.

Amazon.com Review
Jed Henry walks us through the process of creating the cover for Cheer Up, Mouse, from sketches to watercolors to the finished work of art. This is my initial line sketch for the jacket design. I draw directly into Photoshop
with a Wacom tablet. I like sketching in Photoshop, because it allows me to make
slight adjustments, without having to redraw the entire composition. Because watercolor is such an unforgiving medium, I like to plan out the different
color washes in Photoshop. I then use the color mockup as a guide while I paint. Here is the finished watercolor layer. I don't worry about finessing the image at this
point. The goal is to achieve realistic textures and pigment patterns on the paper.
I scan the watercolor painting back into Photoshop, and continue the process digitally. Back in Photoshop, I add layer after layer of detail to the characters. The digital brush
looks exactly like pastels when applied onto the watercolor background. I add contour lines with a thin digital brush. Finally, the talented designers, editors, and printers at Houghton Mifflin work their magic.
They've done a great job!

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Henry introduces a sad Mouse and his concerned friends. Determined to make him smile, the other woodland animals are sure that their special skills are just what the little creature needs to be happy. A black bird takes Mouse on a flight. A frog is sure that "dizzy heights are for the birds./I can wash those tears away./Splash and paddle, wash and wade-Cheer up, Mouse!" as he takes him for a swim in the pond. The pattern continues as each creature, including a rabbit and a squirrel, tries to improve Mouse's mood, to no avail. The animals have concerned or smiling expressions yet they are realistic and recognizable in the illustrations that were created digitally and with colored pencils, watercolors, and pastels. The simple sentences relate how each animal plays with Mouse, and readers will repeat the refrain. The satisfying resolution comes in several wordless spreads as the chipmunk realizes what Mouse needed all along-a hug. A solid story about friendship that is sure to cheer readers.-Kristine M. From Booklist
Mouse seems to be having a bad day—he won’t smile. So the other woodland creatures conspire and try their best to cheer him up. Crow thinks the answer is flying, while Frog thinks it is swimming. Rabbit tries jumping and the bluebirds, singing. They even try throwing a party, but nothing works until Chipmunk looks closely at Mouse and then gives him a hug. Henry uses watercolors, pastels, and colored pencils to lavishly illustrate this charming, simple tale of friendship and individuality. Each animal has activities he or she enjoys—“splash and paddle,” “dig and shovel,” “dip and dive,” “chomp and chew”—but until the animals pay attention to Mouse and learn what makes him feel good, they cannot help him. Youngsters will enjoy the simple phrases and delightful illustrations by the creator of I Speak Dinosaur (2012). Perfect for fans of Dori Chaconas’ One Little Mouse (2002). The Perfect Book
By Jackson Randle
This book is SO well done! The easy reading and beautiful illustrations meld perfectly into a charming story about Mouse and his Friends. I don't want to spoil the ending because the telling was so perfectly done in the book that it would be unfair to expose it any other way! I almost cried it was so sweet. Looking forward to more from Jed Henry!

Sun-hee and her older brother, Tae-yul, live in Korea with their parents. Because Korea is under Japanese occupation, the children study Japanese and speak it at school. Their own language, their flag, the folktales Uncle tells them—even their names—are all part of the Korean culture that is now forbidden. When World War Ii comes to Korea, Sun-hee is surprised that the Japanese expect their Korean subjects to fight on their side. But the greatest shock of all comes when Tae-yul enlists in the Japanese army in an attempt to protect Uncle, who is suspected of aiding the Korean resistance. Sun-hee stays behind, entrusted with the life-and-death secrets of a family at war.

Amazon.com Review
Inspired by her own family's stories of living in South Korea during the Japanese occupation in the years preceding World War II, Newbery Medal-winning author Linda Sue Park chronicles the compelling story of two siblings, 10-year-old Sun-hee and 13-year-old Tae-yul, and their battle to maintain their identity and dignity during one of Korea's most difficult and turbulent times. In alternating first-person chapters, they relate their family's troubles under the strict fascist regime. The Kim family is stripped of their cultural symbols, only permitted to learn Japanese history and language, and forced to convert their names to Japanese. Sun-hee, now Keoko, struggles to reconcile her Korean home life with her Japanese school and friends, while Tae-yul, now Nobuo, attempts to convert his growing anger into a more positive passion for flight and airplanes. Both are worried for their uncle, whom they discover is printing an underground Korean resistance paper. When Sun-hee inadvertently puts her uncle's life in danger, she sets in motion a chain of events that results in her brother volunteering as a pilot for the Japanese near the end of WWII. While Sun-hee and her parents wait in breathless uncertainty to hear from Tae-yul, the war rushes to a close, leaving Korea's destiny hanging in the balance. This well-researched historical novel is accompanied by a thoughtful author's note that explains what happened to Korea and families like the Kims after WWII and a bibliography to entice interested young readers into learning more about a topic largely unknown to American audiences. (Ages 10 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
A brother and sister alternate as narrators in Newbery Medalist Park's (A Single Shard) well-constructed novel, which takes place from 1940-1945 in Japanese-occupied Korea. The Japanese government forbids the Korean language to be spoken and the country's flag to be flown, and even forces Korean families like Tae-yul and Sun-hee's to change their names (Sun-hee becomes Keoko). Through the use of the shifting narrators, Park subtly points up the differences between male and female roles in Korean society; and the father's process of choosing the family's Japanese name speaks volumes about his strength and intelligence. As the war intensifies, each family member asserts his or her individuality, from Sun-hee, who continues to keep a journal after a soldier calls it "a crime against our Divine Emperor," to her uncle, who prints a revolutionary newspaper in hiding, to Tae-yul, who joins the Japanese army to avoid helping the military police capture his uncle only to be chosen as a kamikaze pilot. The son comes to an understanding of his father rather abruptly at the novel's close, and some readers may wonder why Tae-yul was not labeled a chin-il-pa ("lover of Japan" ). But, in the end, telling details provide a clear picture of Sun-hee and Tae-yul and their world. Readers will come away with an appreciation of this period of history and likely a greater interest in learning more about it. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grades 6-9--Living in Korea in the 1940s was difficult because the Japanese, who occupied the country, seemed determined to obliterate Korean culture and to impose their own on its residents. Sun-hee and her older brother, Tae-yul, still go to school every day, but lessons now consist of lectures and recitations designed to glorify Japan. To add to their unhappiness, everyone, adults and children alike, must give up their Korean names and take new Japanese ones. Sun-hee, now called Keoko, and Tae-yul, newly named Nobuo, tell the story in alternating narrative voices. They describe the hardships their family is forced to face as Japan becomes enmeshed in World War II and detail their individual struggles to understand what is happening. Tension mounts as Uncle, working with the Korean resistance movement, goes into hiding, and Tae-yul takes a drastic step that he feels is necessary to protect the family. What is outstanding is the insight Park gives into the complex minds of these young people. Each of them reacts to the events in different ways-Sun-hee takes refuge in writing while Tae-yul throws his energies into physical work. Yet in both cases they develop subtle plans to resist the enemy. Like the Rose of Sharon tree, symbol of Korea, which the family pots and hides in their shed until their country is free, Sun-hee and Tae-yul endure and grow. This beautifully crafted and moving novel joins a small but growing body of literature, such as Haemi Balgassi's Peacebound Trains (Clarion, 1996) and Sook Nyul Choi's The Year of Impossible Goodbyes (Houghton, 1991), that expands readers' understanding of this period.

a different kind of history lesson ...
By Yoomi
When I was younger, my mom told me her older sister was a girl during the time when Japan occupied Korea. I never gave it much thought until I read this book. My aunt also had to change her name and learn Japanese in school. As a Korean-American who was born and raised in the US, I can't even begin to imagine the hardships they had to endure.

The story is simply written but may be a little difficult to follow for younger readers because of the flip-flop narration between the brother and sister. But it is a beautiful story. What I loved most was that while the story is from the point of view of 2 Korean children, the author did not villanize the Japanese. In a world that is consumed by hate, it is refreshing to read a story that is about family, friends, and hope, instead of hate and revenge.

I love this book so much I have bought a copy for my school library.

When My Name Was Keoko
By Drama/English teacher
I am a middle school Language Arts teacher from Florida where WHEN MY NAME WAS KEOKO is among the 15 books selected as Sunshine State Young Readers recommended books for the 2005-2006 school year. Having read all 15 books this summer, a few stood out as being worth a 5 star rating; WHEN MY NAME WAS KEOKO is one of those books and, in my humble opinion, the best of the all.

Were I to be asked to teach character using a young adult (YA) novel, I would certainly choose this book from this list (which also includes the excellent YA titles: GRANNY TORELLI MAKES SOUP, SAHARA SPECIAL, THE UNSEEN and AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS -- I would also highly recommend the superb SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson). The beauty of this historical fiction is that it seems so real a story because it seems to treat its characters with such enormous respect and clarity of voice. I was particularly impressed as it told a story of a time in history that I am not familiar with (and yet I felt I should have been). Perhaps that revelation makes me more enraptured of the story within. I felt honored to be allowed to see such an intimate portrait of two characters who (by their society's standards) would be more naturally private in their thoughts.

I cannot recommend this book more.

[I will not reveal any more of the story than other commentators already have as I feel that the joy of the reading is in discovering what comes next.]

Great Educational and Fun Read
By A Customer
The book When My Name Was Keoko, by Linda Sue Park, was a good book. I read it for a 7th grade English class, and enjoyed reading it. This book is about a painful chapter in Korean history. This book takes place in Korea, in 1940, and is about a Korean family, named Kim, who have to survive in despite of Japanese discrimination during World War II. The young girl in the family, Sun-hee is ignorant and doesn't really understand everything the Japanese do, while her brother, Tae-yul, almost does. Tae-yul joins the Japanese army, and becomes a kamikaze pilot in order to show the strength of the Korean people. The rest of the family has to stay home, and fight for their equality.
I liked this book because it taught many lessons, but wasn't too much of a "school book." Most books we read about World War II talk about the war's affect on the US, but this book shows the war from a whole other perspective. The story kept me reading, but I have read better books. The most enjoyable part of this book was the fact that, every chapter, it switched from Sun-hee's point of view too Tae-yul's point of view. This made the book more interesting because you would read about things from both people's point of view. Reading a book like this allowed me to have a deeper understanding of some themes, problems, and lessons, such as fighting against discrimination. I liked the way Linda Sue Park was extremely descriptive, because it allowed me to see the characters, and feel the hardships of the Kim family. For example, even on the first page, one of the main character's personalities is shown. "I wasn't supposed to listen to men's business, but I couldn't help it...the longer I stayed in the room, the more I heard." This shows the character Sun-hee, and the ways she wanted to know information. I highly recommend this book to young adult readers because it is truthful, teaches lessons, and is a good read.

Something for Everyone
By L. Jackson
The BANR 2011, besides having the most interesting and fun short fiction, non-fiction and assorted other offerings, is unique in its creation, being the product of lots of time and effort by high school students. They have chosen a little something for everyone: a wonderful essay about Roger Ebert, two funky and interesting story length cartoons, many short stories that make you think, and, of course, the best "wikileaks revelations" of 2011!! Based on your personal taste, you may not like everything in this book, but I know you will like a lot of it. Let's hear it for non-required and fun reading!!

Distracting typos in Kindle version
By Amazon Customer
I'm not sure if the typos are unique to the Kindle version, but they are frequent and distracting. They seem to be the sort of typos caused by OCR, which is weird, since the publisher presumably had the text itself.

BEST BOOK OF SHORT STORIES
By Roy Berger
There are only 2 or 3 stories that I didn't find engaging. This is 1000 percent better than all the other short story books I have read in the past several years.
I just read the true story by and of James R Spring and his avocation of finding lost children south of the border. ( You can google him and read about him and his past-time.) Just an example of the variety of well-written stories in this book.

Ubik, by Philip K. Dick

“From the stuff of space opera, Dick spins a deeply unsettling existential horror story, a nightmare you’ll never be sure you’ve woken up from.”—Lev Grossman, Time

Glen Runciter runs a lucrative business—deploying his teams of anti-psychics to corporate clients who want privacy and security from psychic spies. But when he and his top team are ambushed by a rival, he is gravely injured and placed in “half-life,” a dreamlike state of suspended animation. Soon, though, the surviving members of the team begin experiencing some strange phenomena, such as Runciter’s face appearing on coins and the world seeming to move backward in time. As consumables deteriorate and technology gets ever more primitive, the group needs to find out what is causing the shifts and what a mysterious product called Ubik has to do with it all.

“More brilliant than similar experiments conducted by Pynchon or DeLillo.”—Roberto Bolaño

Amazon.com Review
Nobody but Philip K. Dick could so successfully combine SF comedy with the unease of reality gone wrong, shifting underfoot like quicksand. Besides grisly ideas like funeral parlors where you swap gossip for the advice of the frozen dead, Ubik (1969) offers such deadpan farce as a moneyless character's attack on the robot apartment door that demands a five-cent toll:

"I'll sue you," the door said as the first screw fell out.

Joe Chip said, "I've never been sued by a door. But I guess I can live through it."

Chip works for Glen Runciter's anti-psi security agency, which hires out its talents to block telepathic snooping and paranormal dirty tricks. When its special team tackles a big job on the Moon, something goes terribly wrong. Runciter is killed, it seems--but messages from him now appear on toilet walls, traffic tickets, or product labels. Meanwhile, fragments of reality are timeslipping into past versions: Joe Chip's beloved stereo system reverts to a hand-cranked 78 player with bamboo needles. Why does Runciter's face appear on U.S. coins? Why the repeated ads for a hard-to-find universal panacea called Ubik ("safe when taken as directed")?

The true, chilling state of affairs slowly becomes clear, though the villain isn't who Joe Chip thinks. And this is Dick country, where final truths are never quite final and--with the help of Ubik--the reality/illusion balance can still be tilted the other way. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Review
SALES POINTS 'One of the most original practitioners writing any kind of fiction, Dick made most of the European avant-garde seem like navel-gazers in a cul-de-sac' - Sunday Times 'My literary hero' -- Fay Weldon 'For everyone lost in the endlessly multiplicating realities of the modern world, remember: Philip K. Dick got there first' -- Terry Gilliam

From the Inside Flap
Philip K. Dick's searing metaphysical comedy of death and salvation is a tour de force of panoramic menace and unfettered slapstick, in which the departed give business advice, shop for their next incarnation, and run the continual risk of dying yet again.

Probably the best Phil Dick novel to start with; a classic
By Tung Yin
Although "Ubik" wasn't the first Philip K. Dick novel I read (having read just about all of them now, it's hard to remember which was first, but I think it was "Martian Time-Slip"), I would recommend it as the best starting point for someone trying to decide if PKD is your cup of tea. "Ubik" has all of the major elements of the typical PKD novel (to the extent there is any typicality): (1) questioning of the meaning of reality; (2) an almost pathetic sense of humor in the face of the unraveling of reality; (3) an everyman protagonist; and (4) extreme readability despite a somewhat pedestrian writing style.
The plot can be summed up like this: some humans have psychic powers, but rather than being seen as heroes (as is the case in most sci-fi), they're possible sources of invasions of your privacy. Never fear, however, because some humans have developed anti-psychic powers -- they block the powers of the others. A bunch of anti-psychics go on a mission, but something goes wrong and they barely get away with their lives. Almost immediately, they notice that something is not right. Phone directories are out of date, coffee is disgustingly stale, and so on. Time, it seems, is flowing backwards!
For readers who aren't aware, PKD was one of the most influential sci-fi writers, with his reality-warping stories. His interest in this topic can be traced, no doubt, to his youthful experimentation with narcotics -- an experience recounted largely in "A Scanner Darkly."
PKD was an incredibly prolific writer; he wrote something like 16 novels in a five year stretch in the late-1960s, including "Ubik." Many of his best novels were written during that stretch. If you like "Ubik," I would suggest in no particular order: "The Gameplayers of Titan," "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch," "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (made into the movie "Bladerunner"), "Dr. Bloodmoney," and "The Man in the High Castle." By the 1970's, PKD stopped writing as many novels, and they became more thematically complex, with increasing emphasis on religious spirituality.

Classic PKD
By alchemist42
I finished reading Ubik and I couldn't even start any other books for a week because I had to sit and think about everything that had just happened. I've read several other books by Mr. Dick and, while they are all excellent, this is the best. So far. It has everything that I have come to expect from him. You never quite know where reality is. Then you figure it out only to find that you are wrong. Then another twist comes. It has excellent pacing, a good bit of humour, and - of course - loads of wild ideas about life, death, the future, consumerism, dreams, drugs, psychic abilities, and the human condition.
The first few pages set up the stage for the story in a way that an average author would have required 100 pages of descriptions and explanations. And it all made sense. This is a good book if you have never been introduced to PKD's work, since it is very accessible and well written. It is required reading for any PKD fans who have not yet gotten around to it.
Just remember- it is safe when taken as directed.

I laughed, I cried...
By Ed Lee
This was the first PKD I ever read, so it's got some sentimental value...as it is, it's stood the test of time to remain one of my all time favorite PKD novels.
Supposedly one of the major influences on The Matrix (along with The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch), Ubik is about the subjectivity of physical reality, death, advertising, consumerism...
In the first few pages PKD introduces more ideas than most sci-fi (I cringe to pigeonhole him so, but it's the closest comparison) authors are capable of their entire careers.
You can't take this book on face value, it engages the reader so completely with it's energy, style and fiercely challenging ideas. Not to mention the plot twists, which will keep you guessing to the final page (without sounding too horribly cliched I hope).
For PKD vets it's comforting to revisit the world he established in his most blatantly sci-fi phase, with all the standbys like precogs, conapts, talking kitchen appliances, etc.
For PKD newbies Ubik is a perfect choice to start in on the incredible feast that are the novels of PKD - trust me.
