Really good Geometry textbook

This is a really great Geometry book. My daughter's school has this book available online, but we both agree that having the hard copy available when working through her homework makes it much easier to flip back and forth from the examples, Appendixes (includes the answers to most positive numbered problems) and the homework listing.

Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war.

Amazon.com Review
The evacuation of Jews from Nazi-held Denmark is one of the great untold stories of World War II. On September 29, 1943, word got out in Denmark that Jews were to be detained and then sent to the death camps. Within hours the Danish resistance, population and police arranged a small flotilla to herd 7,000 Jews to Sweden. Lois Lowry fictionalizes a true-story account to bring this courageous tale to life. She brings the experience to life through the eyes of 10-year-old Annemarie Johannesen, whose family harbors her best friend, Ellen Rosen, on the eve of the round-up and helps smuggles Ellen's family out of the country. Number the Stars won the 1990 Newbery Medal.

From Publishers Weekly

A Must-Read Regardless of Your Age
By A. Wolverton
First I should say that I work in a bookstore. Since I hadn't read a young adult book in nearly 30 years, I decided to read a few to learn what to recommend to customers. The first one I picked up was `Number the Stars.' It blew me away.
Lowry has written an incredibly moving account of the Jews in World War II Denmark. Annemarie Johansen worries what might happen to her Jewish friend Ellen Rosen as the Nazis capture and "relocate" all Jews. During this time, Annemarie learns about the power of evil, the strength of family, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Lowry does a masterful job of showing how Annemarie grows up before our very eyes in the way she interacts with her little sister Kirsti, her friend Ellen, and the ever present Nazi officers. Annemarie learns several lessons throughout the book that she'll never forget. We won't forget them either.
This is an incredibly moving book. There are very few books that absolutely everyone should read. This is one of them.

a must read book
By Julia McCaffree
This story is set in Denmark in 1943, during World War II. During that time Denmark was under Nazi occupation. The story tells about the life of two very close friends, Annemarie Johansen and Ellen Rosen, and their families. Living in Denmark during that time was very difficult. Nazi soldiers were on every street corner. There were food shortages and they were required to darken their windows every evening. One day, the Jewish families received word that the Germans were going to relocate all the Jews in Denmark. Since the Rosens were Jewish, Mr. and Mrs. Rosen were takin into hinding. Ellen went to live with the Johansens and pretended to be a part of the Johansen family. A few days later, Mrs. Johansen took her two daughters and Ellen to visit Uncle Henrik. The rest of the story is about the tremendous courage of Annemarie, Mrs. Johansen, Uncle Henrik, and Peter Neilsen and the trouble they endured to help their friends. I really enjoyed this book. It was very moving, suspenseful, and sad. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. I highly recommend reading this book.

Lives in the Balance
By A Customer
This book provides a wonderful opportunity for both kids and parents to read a good story together and study history from a children's perspective.
I always enjoyed reading historical novels, even as a kid, and my daughter, who isn't real crazy about reading, is beginning to change her mind because this story speaks to her. That it takes place in a country she never heard of before isn't relevant.
This is no fairy tale-it's the story of two Danish families, friends before the war, one Jewish and one Christian, who fight the effects of the German invasion of their country and the subsequent attempt to eliminate the Jewish population.
Through the pages of this book, we are given the story of the Rosens and the Johansens, who, on the eve of the Jewish New Year in 1943, wisely act to avert tragedy. The Rosens are blessed by the knowledge that the Nazis are beginning to move in and not paralyzed by fear into inaction. The Johansens are blessed by the knowledge that, as Danes, they could do nothing less but protect their friends and fellow Danes.
There are some scary moments, certainly, but not so frightening that children should avoid this book. Some books can be read without parents nearby; this one I recommend be read either by or with parents because some explanation of history is helpful.
One of the aspects of this book that I particularly liked was how it helps children to think and spot upcoming events.
At one point, for example, there's a reference to the Star of David necklace worn by one of the children. As the German soldiers barge into the Johansen home where the Jewish girl is hiding in plain sight, my daughter exclaimed that someone should hide the necklace before the soldiers find it. That's exactly what happens-the girls remove the necklace and the Germans are, temporarily, fooled into leaving them alone.
Luckily, the Johansens know that they've been granted a only a temporary reprieve, and so the rest of the story tells of Ellen Rosen's escape, along with most of the rest of Denmark's Jews, to Sweden and safety.
There are just enough ordinary details--the annoying younger sister, life in the shadow of a past tragedy--to leaven the story about the Nazis.
While the characters are fictional, the story, of course, is not, and so it is a great way for children to feel, rather than just hear, about the lives of people who fall victim to brutality and what individuals can do to combat evil.
I can't think of a better lesson for children to learn. Or grownups.

“A beautifully written and masterfully told story full of wicked intrigue, gripping suspense, stirring action, deft plot twists, and incredibly rich and compelling characters … destined to be a classic series of nautical adventure.” —Eric Jay Dolin, author of Leviathan and Fur, Fortune, and Empire

Having sunk the first ship he commanded off the coast of Ireland, Captain Matthew Quinton is determined to complete his second mission without loss of life or honor. Rebellion is stirring in the Scottish Isles, and King Charles II needs loyal officers to sail north and face the threat. But aboard His Majesty’s Ship the Jupiter, the young “gentleman captain” leads a resentful crew and has but few on whom he can rely. As they approach the wild coast of Scotland, Quinton begins to learn the ropes and win the respect of his fellow officers and sailors.

But he has other worries: a suspicion that the previous captain of the Jupiter was murdered, a feeling that several among his crew have something to hide, and a growing conviction that betrayal lies closer to home than he had thought.

“A delightful tale.” —Kirkus Reviews

“As fascinating an account of Restoration politics as it is of the Restoration Navy.” —Seth Hunter, author of The Winds of Folly

Amazon.com Review

1662: Restoration England. Cromwell is dead, and King Charles II has reclaimed the throne after years of civil war. It is a time of divided allegiances, intrigue, and outright treachery. With rebellion stirring in the Scottish Isles, the hard-pressed sovereign needs men he can trust to sail north and defuse this new threat.

Matthew Quinton is such a man—the second son of a noble royalist family, he is loyal, if inexperienced. Having sunk the first man-of-war under his command within weeks, Matthew is determined to complete his second mission without loss of life or honor. Upon taking command of His Majesty's Ship the Jupiter, the young “gentleman captain” is faced with a resentful crew and has but few on whom he can rely: Kit Farrell, an illiterate commoner with vast seafaring experience, and Phineas Musk, a roguish but steadfast family retainer. As they approach the wild coast of Scotland, Matthew begins to learn the ropes and win the respect of his fellow officers and sailors.

But he has other difficulties on the voyage north: a suspicion that the previous captain of the Jupiter was murdered, a feeling that many among his crew have something to hide, and the growing conviction that betrayal lies closer to home than he had thought.

With cannon fire by sea and swordplay by land, Gentleman Captain is a rousing high-seas adventure in the finest nautical tradition.

Amazon Exclusive: Interview with J.D. Davies

One of my main motivations in writing Gentleman Captain, and the books to follow in the Quinton Journals series, has been to bring the seventeenth century navy before a much wider audience. The genre of 'sailing navy' historical fiction has always been dominated by 'the age of Nelson', and there are obviously good reasons for this--not least the fact that the Royal Navy was usually victorious in the battles it fought, which was not always the case in my period, and because many more sources are available for authors to call upon as research tools. But the neglect of the seventeenth century navy means that there is often a lack of awareness of some of the largest and most hard-fought battles in the entire age of sail, while the navy of Cromwell, Charles II and James II fought against arguably a wider and more interesting range of opponents than that encountered by Nelson and his contemporaries: they included the Dutch, the French, the Spanish, the Danes and Norwegians, the Barbary corsairs, pirates of many sorts on many seas, and tragically, of course, against each other, in the British civil wars and their aftermath.

The other great advantage of working on the late seventeenth century is the wonderful array of characters available to an author. The inscrutable King Charles II, his mistresses and the intrigues of his court continue to fascinate. The fact that one of the most important people connected with the navy in the period, Samuel Pepys, is also so well known to so many people thanks to his wonderfully frank diary is a particularly happy coincidence. The period also witnessed the plague of 1665 and the Great Fire of London of the following year. It saw important political developments, beginning with the restoration of one king and ending with the deposition of another, and undoubtedly marked an important stage in the beginnings of democracy in Britain. It saw remarkable advances in science, epitomized by such careers as those of Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Christopher Wren. Therefore, I wanted to write books that were just as firmly grounded in events on land as at sea, and which are rooted in the wider history of the period.

To me, one of the most important aspects of bringing Matthew Quinton to life was to place him at the heart of a complex family history, not all of which he knows or understands. I wanted to write about a character whose family and ancestry contributed almost as much to his development as the navy in which he served. Finally, the fact that the Restoration navy contained, and was ultimately dominated by, so-called 'gentlemen captains'--well-born young men with little or no experience of the sea before they were given commands--meant that Matthew would begin his journals, not as a fully-formed mariner trained to the sea from his youngest days (as were and are so many officers in the real and fictional 'Nelson era'), but as a complete ignoramus. I hope that readers can learn with him, and through his eyes, about the sea, the ships and the naval warfare of the Restoration age.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Fans of high-seas adventures by Patrick O’Brian or C. S. Forester should definitely be steered in the direction of this rousing first novel by an expert in seventeenth-century British naval history. This really is a splendid book, with terrific characters, a thrilling adventure, and a wonderful sense of time and place. The year is 1662. Matthew Quinton, born into a noble family, is a ship’s captain with a poor record, having seen his first command sink to the bottom of the sea. Surprisingly, the king asks Quinton to take command of a new vessel, the Jupiter, and set sail for Scotland, where antiroyalist rebels are causing concern. Commanding an unwilling crew, with only a few supporters, Quinton is forced to learn the ways of the sea . . . or, perhaps, die trying. Davies is a talented storyteller, with a real gift for memorable phrases and visually evocative prose He writes, for example, about a storm’s wind “that came straight from the flatulence of hell’s own bowels.” Quinton is a likable and sympathetic lead, a gentleman who surprises even himself with his inner reserves of strength and bravery. The book is the first in a projected series, which should be jolly good news for anyone who reads this one. --David Pitt

Review

"The author does a creditable job of dramatizing life in Samuel Pepys's navy, and by the explosive climax, Quinton has developed into a hero worth rooting for and meeting again in further exploits."
--Publishers Weekly

"Davies, steeped in the language of the era, proceeds to depict the drama with confidence and verve, and he fashions a convincing crew of personalities and types... Along the way, Davies takes every opportunity to feed the reader some British dynastic history, but the writing is natural and well worth the instruction. A delightful tale."
--Kirkus Reviews

"Gentleman Captain is a beautifully written and masterfully told story full of wicked intrigue, gripping suspense, stirring action, deft plot twists, and incredibly rich and compelling characters. It so effortlessly transports the reader to another place and time, you won’t want to put it down until you have reached its thrilling conclusion. J. D. Davies promises this is just the first volume in the journals of Matthew Quinton. It is a brilliant beginning to what is destined to be a classic series of nautical adventure."
--Eric Jay Dolin, author of Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America

"J.D. Davies's depiction of Restoration England and the British navy is impeccable, his characters truly live and breathe, and the plot kept me in suspense. Gentleman Captain is one of the rare books that I have read with a smile on my face from cover to cover. I could not recommend it more."
--Edward Chupack, author of Silver: My Own Tale as Written by Me with a Goodly Amount of Murder

"A splendid addition to nautical adventure, and a grand story, to boot!"
—Dewey Lambdin, author of The Baltic Gambit

An excellent start to a new series
By Susan K. Keogh
What encouraged me to buy this novel was the era in which it takes place--after Charles II is restored to the throne. So many novels in the Age of Sail genre take place during the Napoleonic era. To me, that era has been written to death. Davies is known for his extensive knowledge of the Royal Navy in the 1600's so that intrigued me as well.

Another unique and refreshing aspect to this novel is the main setting: Scotland. First time I've read an Age of Sail novel that took place there. Beyond that, I enjoyed Davies's prose. I always admire someone who can teach me new words. And that is when I love my Kindle even more--the built-in dictionary that allows me to instantly access the definition of any word in the novel I'm reading.

Overall I liked the characters, especially the wide variety and particularly the common seaman (and the specifics of Cornwall men I also found interesting). My one complaint about the protagonist was his appalling lack of basic seamanship. While I won't argue with Davies's knowledge of the "gentleman captains" of that particular era, I still found it hard to believe that even a raw landsman wouldn't at least pick up the name of the masts and a few of the lines after spending the amount of time he spent on his first command. My time on board sailing ships is limited, but even I picked up a lot in just a short time.

Overall, I found Gentleman Captain to be an excellent read.

A first-person British naval adventure in the O'Brian tradition - well done sir!
By Scott Schiefelbein
With "Gentleman Captain," J.D. Davies dares to put his toe in the waters so hallowed by Patrick O'Brian with his magnificent Aubrey-Maturin novels. While many authors write about the adventures of the British navy on the high seas, very few do so by evoking O'Brian's unique style - extreme reliance on period dialogue, naval jargon provided without translation, and focus that is as intense on the process of brewing tea as it is the firing of a cannon. Davies writes in a more modern language (perhaps O'Brian Lite?), which makes his book more accessible if not entertaining.

I'm grateful for the approach, for the plot is so heavily focused on 17th-century British politics that I didn't need the language making things any murkier.

The year is 1662 and Charles II sits atop a shaky British throne. The kingdom has been riven by civil war following the Cromwellian experience with Republicanism, and England is far from the juggernaut of Europe. The Dutch, the Spanish, the Swedes, and even the Scots are prime threats to Charles' reign, not to mention those Brits who fought on the losing side but had the temerity to survive the war. A shipment of arms to Scotland demands that Charles send an expedition to the north to quell any potential rebellion. Who should he send?

Here we meet Matthew Quinton, the second son of a loyal noble house. Quinton, a born cavalry man and a bit of a rogue, knows absolutely nothing about the sea (a sad fact he demonstrates by losing his first ship almost immediately upon taking command). Quinton is the "gentleman captain" of the title, and an introductory quote reveals that there are sailors and there are gentlemen, but there are no gentlemen who are sailors. These captains are despised by the men they must command.

Quinton, despite his misgivings, does his loyal best to fix this during the Scottish expedition. That was good foresight, as Quinton will ultimately be drawn into a deadly battle where the confidence of his crew is as critical as his seamanship.

Davies spins an often hilarious, often thrilling, and occasionally moving yarn. He has a terrific sense of character as minor villains, allies, henchmen and crew become fully realized in their own way. By the end, you will care enough about these characters to shed some tears or smile with joy at their fate.

An excellent debut novel, "Gentleman Captain" is sure to spark a long and successful series. The second novel is "The Mountain of Gold," and I look forward to climbing it.

A little slow, but good
By Domenico Bettinelli
In the tradition of Aubrey-Maturin and Horatio Hornblower comes Matthew Quinton. But this tales a bit different the others. For one thing it takes place in an earlier time and for those familiar with the lat 17th century tales of the British Navy it's both familiar and unfamiliar. For one thing there's the situation of the title: Quinton is a Gentleman Captain, which means that he's a young nobleman with no experience at sea selected to be captain for no other reason than the fact that he's an aristocrat and loyal to the King.

It's a good story about a young man trying to live up to a role he didn't want, to earn the respect of men of a lower station but of greater skill and experience, and to fill the shoes of his much beloved and late lamented predecessor. It's quite slow to develop and the first half of the book seems to take forever. Nevertheless it's not a bad story overall, especially since the slow pace allows both good character development and some exposition in-depth of the world in which the story takes place, which is post-Cromwell England. The situation is pretty complex and would be unfamiliar to many Americans and so having the development served me well at least.

Before the Rain: A Memoir of Love and Revolution, by Luisita Lopez Torregrosa

In a voice haunting and filled with longing, Before the Rain tells the story of love unexpected, its fragile bounds and subtle perils. As a newspaper editor in the ’80s, Luisita Torregrosa lived her career. Enter Elizabeth, a striking, reserved, and elusive writer with whom Torregrosa falls deeply in love. Their story—irresistible romance, overlapping ambitions, and fragile union—unfolds as the narrative shifts to the Philippines and the fall of Ferdinand Marcos. There, on that beautiful, troubled island, the couple creates a world of their own, while covering political chaos and bloody upheavals. What was effortless abroad becomes less idyllic when they return to the United States, and their ending becomes as surprising and revealing as their beginning. Torregrosa captures the way love transforms those who experience it for an unforgettable, but often too brief, time. This book is distinguished not only by its strong, unique, and conflicted heroines, but also by Torregrosa’s lyrical portrait of the Philippines and the even more exotic heart of intimacy.

Exclusive Author Essay by Luisita Lopez Torregrosa

Little did I know on a bone-freezing day in January, now a quarter-century ago, that I would gamble on an improbable chase after an illusion halfway around the globe. A gamble that would completely transform my life.

There was a touch of insanity, I have to say, in my decision to break away from an established career, to give up everything to follow a striking and inaccessible young woman who, as chance would have it, was seeking her own way in the world.

That is the heart of the matter in Before the Rain. The story revolves around a magnificent affair that defied social conventions, an edgy and obsessive relationship played out against the tumult of a revolution. It begins in a chaotic Manila, with the People Power revolution of 1986 which overthrew the twenty-year rule of Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Before the Rain evokes in palpable detail the exuberant mood of the revolution, the ecstatic hope of the Filipinos, the bloody coup attempts, and the bizarre legacy that Marcos and his wife, Imelda, left. The cast includes rogue colonels, undercover American operatives, coup plotters who are millionaires, and a clique of foreign correspondents who thrive in a state of high alert, running from bed to bedlam, making backroom deals, and sometimes backstabbing competitors. The days of constant crisis are lightened by the evenings of camaraderie, sexual escapades, star-crossed affairs, and late-night rounds by the pool at the Manila Hotel.

Hemingway once said to a friend, "If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast." Manila was our Paris.

Review

“Before the Rain takes us to the exotic and pillaged places of the earth, through rain-swept streets and wine-soaked nights and into the hearts of two passionate, revolutionary women who dared to love and lose; and lived to dare again.  A wild, brave, truthful story.”
--Carole DeSanti, author of The Unruly Passions of Eugénie R

“What is more exotic and unknowable than love? … Spare, precise and soulful, Before the Rain is an epic travelogue of the heart.  It has the urgency of a front page news story, but then, no matter what is happening in the world, love is always revolutionary when it happens to you.”
-Bob Morris, author of Assisted Loving

"A friendship between two journalists covering the Philippines Revolution of 1986 deepens into a passionate, far-flung love affair in this serenely capable work...as Torregrosa fashions in her oblique and beautiful fashion, the two women could never really acknowledge their love publicly, underscoring a sad truth to this memorable work."

Timely, powerful and honest
By Trudie Barreras
In a recent conversation with an acquaintance concerning reviews from the Amazon Vine program, she commented that she wondered about all the four- and five-star reviews she encountered from those reviewers. I said I couldn't speak for others, but I knew that for my own part, I only selected those books I thought I really would find important and meaningful. I have been disappointed in my choice and had to rate a selection as not satisfying to me on only a couple of occasions, and Torregrosa's book is certainly not one of them.

It is necessary to comment that only in the past decade or so has it become possible for a memoir about a same-sex relationship to be shared in any way, let alone honestly and passionately. This year, after all, has seen the final elimination of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the US Military, as well as the acknowledgement by a sitting President that he believes same-sex marriage should be accepted legally.

Obviously, though at least part of the tension and conflict between Luisita and Elizabeth was due to the social attitudes towards lesbian relationships (a term never used in this book, by the way) during the decade covered in the narrative, Torregrosa makes it clear that this was not the main issue. It is obvious that the usual challenges ANY relationship faces - conflicting schedules, communication problems, cultural differences, and so on - are likewise present in same-gender pairings. To some extent, this memoir challenged a perception I've developed from observation of friends that same-gender pairings could "cool" from passion to friendship without the nastiness and rancor that so often accompanies heterosexual divorce. It is my own personal hope that now that Torregrosa has somewhat "broken the ice" with respect to sharing this powerful and ground-breaking memoir, there will be many more stories in this genre, perhaps some having a more positive and joyful resolution.

The only thing that left me a bit unsatisfied was the brevity of the context. The descriptions of various events, including, of course, the revolution in the Philippines, while vivid as vignettes, didn't give me a real sense of connection. Also because of the spare journalistic style of the narrative, I felt at times that there was too much left unsaid about the relationship difficulties themselves - I could not get a true sense of what really went wrong - perhaps because the author herself doesn't really know. In any event, though, I think this book is timely, powerful and very honest, and am glad I had the opportunity to read it.

A time and a place of upheavel both in the world and in the author's personal life
By Linda Linguvic
Beautifully written in the first person by a female journalist about her deeply personal love relationship she and another woman shared in the 1980's, I must say that this book grabbed my interest from the beginning and held it tightly until its bittersweet ending. Every word rings so true that it perfectly captures the time and the place and the lifestyles of these two journalists and their point of view of world events including the upheaval of the government in the Philippines and a portrait and pace of a wide variety of cities, including New York, Washington, and Tokyo and the life-shaping current events around them.

Mostly though, it is about the author's love affair which lived, thrived and finally ended after more than a decade of living and loving and experiencing political changes throughout the world. The author is never explicit in her physical descriptions of the relationship but the writing itself is sensual enough to give the reader an honest view into the love between them as it changes and slowly disintegrates,

Through the years these women make their homes in a many different places and the reader gets to experience it in all the little details that define their existence such as the plants and flowers, the furniture and the geography around them whether it is a hotel room, a city apartment or a rambling country house which requires several servants. All are all described without a wasted word.

This book is only 228 pages long and a fast read that plunged me into a time and a place of upheaval, both in the world and in the author's personal life. I thoroughly recommend it.

Beautifully-Written, But Does Not Really Delve Deep
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
Having completed Before the Rain, I find myself with very little to say, a rather rare occurrence for me. Speechlessness, of course, can be the result of many emotions, too fraught by the impact of the tale or too bored to care. Unfortunately, my reactions more closely resemble the latter.

What drew me to this book was both the lgbt element and the historical aspect. Coming into it, I knew practically nothing about the history of the Philippines, and learning about that history as a backdrop for a touching romance sounded like perfection. Having read the last page of this memoir, though, I do not feel that I know much more than I did when I started, other than now knowing a couple of names of political figures.

This autobiography should, more accurately, be subtitled simply A Memoir of Love, as there is little of revolution. The focus lies almost entirely upon the relationship between Luisita and Elizabeth. While that's fine, the book's description prepared me for something with a broader scope. History receives only the barest treatment, insomuch as it separated the two lovers, as both are reporters and had to travel to cover various events.

I would expect, though, that I would have a very strong picture of Luisita and Elizabeth in my head, since they are the focus, that I would have a good sense of their bond. Alas, I do not. I feel like Torregrosa keeps the audience at a distance from them. She clues us in on the big events of their romance, but does not let us in on any of the small details that really make a life. For all that she is proudly discussing her lesbian relationship, I found it surprising that we never get any sense of their sexual life at all. For all the talk of their intense passion, only a couple of kisses and hugs are mentioned. This made for a disconnect between what she claimed and what I was actually sensing through her words.

I will say, however, that the writing is incredibly beautiful. Torregrosa composes lovely sentences, and she has a unique flair for language. She puts her sentences together in ways I might never think to, slightly strangely, and coaxes a new and different beauty out of them.

For me, this memoir was vastly disappointing, but lovers of language largely for its own sake might find this more interesting than I did. I, personally, hoped to learn more about the author in reading a memoir, but left it with very little sense of Luisita herself.

Red oozes from the patient's gums. He has a rushing headache and the whites of his eyes look like lemons. He will likely die within days.

Here is the true story of how four Americans and one Cuban tracked down a killer, one of the world's most vicious plagues: yellow fever. Set in fever-stricken Cuba, this book allows the reader to feel the heavy air, smell the stench of disease, hears the whine of mosquitoes biting human volunteers during the surreal experiments. Exploring themes of courage, cooperation, and the ethics of human experimentation, this gripping account is ultimately a story of the triumph of science.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–10—This medical mystery is extremely interesting, easy to read, and well illustrated with period photos. It's the story of Walter Reed and his team of U.S. Army doctors who went to Cuba in 1900 to study yellow fever and determine how it was spread. It was important in light of the United States's involvement in a war with Spain for Cuba's freedom and for future developments in South America. Yellow fever outbreaks, such as the one in Philadelphia in 1793, had long plagued America and her neighbors to the south, but despite advances in bacteriology, no progress had been made in discovering how the disease was spread. Jurmain explains Reed's approach to the scientific problem and how it changed over time as more was learned. The individual doctors and volunteers involved are brought to life by the author's use of primary sources such as letters, reports, etc. How the team eventually discovered and then verified that yellow fever was spread by mosquitoes was a combination of luck, good scientific practices, and careful note keeping. Young people interested in medicine or scientific discovery will find this book engrossing, as will history students. End matter includes short biographical sketches of all the volunteers who took part in the experiments, at great risk to their own lives. Exemplary nonfiction.—Robin Henry, Wakeland High School, Frisco, TX END

Review

"With plenty of gory details . . .  Even reluctant readers will respond to the gruesome descriptions of the disease and of brave volunteers . . . Quotations from the doctors’ letters and later accounts by other participants gives the story an immediacy heightened by conversational writing full of questions and cliffhangers . . .  powerful exploration of a disease that killed 100,000 U.S. citizens in the 1800s."--Kirkus Reviews

Good juvenile non-fiction must be interesting enough to keep a child's attention. Suzanne Jurmain succeeds in doing this in The Secret of the Yellow Death. This is not a topic that many children know about or will study in school. In fact, few adults are probably aware of the history of Yellow Fever experiments. The book is well researched. The pictures supplement the text well. The chronological organization and medical mystery approach work very well. The book may be too challenging for the average 10 year old (fifth grader), but is perfect for a seventh grader and above. Adults looking for brief coverage of certain topics can also enjoy some juvenile non-fiction. The writing style of this book is probably too targeted to teens to be of significant interest to adults. I recommend this book for its target audience, teens.

Excellent Read
By The Invisible Pam
I read a boat load of MG/Kidlit non-fiction, and I have to say that this is some of the best writing and story telling that I've run across in that category.

I picked this book up at the library because I was preparing to read Laurie Andersen's FEVER, 1793. Both of my teens have read that book and it's been on my TBR forever. And I guess part of my motivation in adding THE SECRET OF THE YELLOW DEATH to my reading list was to learn more about the disease so I could determine for myself how realistic Andersen's book was.

THE SECRET OF THE YELLOW DEATH turned out to be very readable. The author, Suzanne Jurmain, tells the story of Dr. Walter Reed and his compatriots and their search in Cuba for the cause of Yellow Jack, or Yellow Fever.

She makes a mystery out of the pursuit of the cause of the disease. And she exposes the heroic efforts of the doctors and the others who volunteered to be part of the experiments. Can you imagine laying in a bed in clothes and on the sheets of people who had just died of this horrendous disease? Unwashed, the clothes stunk of the sweat and vomit of the victims but you needed to lay in them for a few days... to make sure you did or didn't get sick. How about letting a mosquito bite you who had recently bitten a patient laying in the hospital ward who you knew had the disease?

There is real heroism in this story and the author brings life to the tale. Good artwork and photos.

A dramatic episode in the history of medicine, the writing touches all the bases, leaves no loose ends.
By Tom Brody
THE SECRET OF THE YELLOW DEATH by Suzanne Jurmain is 101 pages long with about 50 photographs and illustrations. Most excellent is a photograph of a real medical chart called a "fever chart" showing a patient's temperature changes over the course of two weeks, during the onset and recovery from yellow fever (pages 42-32). Also excellent is a photograph of a real typed consent form, used for recruiting human volunteers for a yellow fever study (page 64).

The book begins by grabbing the reader with a half-page description of the symptoms of yellow fever. This vivid narrative will not be boring or dull to any child ("The whites of his eyes looked like lemons. Sometimes he cried out or babbled in delirium.") The hunt for the prevention or treatment of yellow fever begins on page 6, when Walter Reed, M.D., traveled to Cuba, on orders from the U.S. government. We learn about an existing (but incorrect) theory that yellow fever was caused by bacteria, and we learn about a correct, but discounted, theory that yellow fever was transmitted by mosquitoes.

The book is careful to follow each new concept with an example. When the term "bacteriologist" is used, we are told that bacteriology involves placing "tiny amounts of tissue into tubes or dishes filled with a food substance like gelatin or bouillon . . . watch to see if any of the samples grew. . . bacteria that might prove to be the cause of yellow fever." (page 15).

We learn of an experiment where doctors had mosquitoes bite yellow fever patients, and then had the same mosquitoes bite healthy volunteers. The idea for this experiment came from earlier work on ticks that caused "Texas fever" in cattle. We learn about problems that prevented Walter Reed's experiments form working right away. First, he did not know that for a mosquito to transmit yellow fever, the virus needed to be sitting in the mosquito's body for 12 days (incubation period). Also, he did not know that during cold weather, you needed to adjust this incubation period. Pages 26-56 disclose preliminary, small-scale experiments with humans, while pages 57-75 describe more organized, larger scale experiments with humans. We learn of a negative control experiment (an experiment that was expected NOT to work) where human volunteers would be "wearing and using clothing and bedsheets stained by sweat, vomit . . ." and by filth, from yellow fever patients. (page 60). These experiments took place in the year 1900.

The reviewer wishes to point out that similar experiments were carried out by Joseph Goldberger, also about 100 years ago. Goldberger's studies were designed to prove that niacin deficiency disease (pellagra) was NOT caused by an infectious agent. In these experiments, Goldberger and his co-workers drank milk shakes containing doo-doo from sick people with pellagra (see Kenneth Carpenter (1981). Pellagra. Stroudsburg, Pa: Hutchinson Ross Pub. Co. ISBN 0-87933-364-2). From 1902-1906, Goldberger worked on yellow fever, and from 1914-1926 he worked on pellagra. While Prof. Kenneth Carpenter's book is for adults, I most heartily recommend Lisa Yount's children's science books, for example, her book, WILLIAM HARVEY DISCOVERER OF HOW BLOOD CIRCULATES, or her book on ANTOINE LAVOISIER.

CRITICISM. Page ten contains some writing that is wrong, and should be deleted in the published version of the book, "Science wasn't about opinions or theories. It was about facts." This writing is garbled and it should be corrected. Another criticism is that the author is not a good writer. Sometimes the author uses bizarre condescending language, apparently with the notion that this type of language might make it easier to understand the scientific concepts found in the book.

THE SECRET OF THE YELLOW DEATH contains a happy ending. The epilogue discloses that the Cuban man who had originally devised the mosquito-theory of transmission, Carlos Finley, lived to be vindicated and honored. We learn that it was not until 1927 when it was realized that yellow fever was caused by a virus (the mosquito was a vector that carried the virus from one human to another). FIVE STARS.

Beautiful!

I love, love my copy. I have called it "the perfect book" on multiple occasions since it has come in. My only disappointment is that I can't find any more books by this publisher and cover designer. Not only are the book's contents classic, insightful, and intelligent, but the size and feel of the book are perfect, with beautiful gold embellishments. And this is a spectacular price for such a product. I'm looking forward to finding more from this publisher.

beautiful hardcover edition by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
By LeeAnn Balbirona
Surprised by Joy and The Four Loves are two great works by C.S. Lewis which are well-known classics. This review is to specifically praise the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt hardcover edition with cover design by Michaela Sullivan and cover art by Ray Fenwick. This edition is much nicer than I was expecting with gold embossing and a very attractive binding. The two books are presented without forewards or editor's notes, just the books, also very nice. This edition makes a lovely gift and beautiful addition to your bookshelf. I will be looking for more by this publisher and design team.

By nomemprunte
i consider The Four Loves to be required reading for becoming a human being in relation to other human beings. Surprised by Joy is the wonderful story of C.S. Lewis's adult life, conversion, and the account of how he met his wife. i always recomend these two books together to my friends. nice to see that someone else had the same idea.
