From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-An original selection based on the beloved character created by Margret and H. A. Rey. Curious George is a guest at a Hanukkah party, where he sees children make jelly doughnuts, plays dreidel, and watches the Man in the Yellow Hat light the menorah. He helps make latkes, plays follow the leader, assists with cleanup, and wraps up a treat for a sick friend. The reasons behind most of the activities are not provided, e.g., the lighting of the menorah is described, but the reason behind it isn't given, making this book more suited to children who already know about the holiday. Despite the glittery cover, rhyming text, and charming images of George breaking eggs and washing dishes, this board book with tabs is an additional purchase.-Mara Alpert, Los Angeles Public Libraryα(c) Copyright 2011. About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

Sweet book for young children
By JewishHolidaysInABox
We enjoyed this book so much that we let our readers know about it in a blog post at [...]

I'm drawn to Curious George because that playful monkey was one of our daughter's absolute faves. In this Hanukkah book, you get the cute simian himself, along with the man in the yellow hat, in a series of poems about different aspects of the holiday.

Here are a few of the things that we especially liked:

Each poem is a two-page spread, with tabs on the end illustrated with Hanukkah and other symbols. So it's very tactile and inviting.

The illustrations are, as you'd expect, absolutely charming.

It's a board book, so it's very sturdy for young readers.

It plays on the idea of Curious George and his special abilities and mishaps. For instance, when George spins the dreidel, he can use "both hands and feet." And when he helps make the potato latkes, one egg ends up a gooey mess on the counter.

Cute book that my kids enjoy
By Kindle Customer
My children are learning about Hanukkah and this was a cute and fun book. It rhymes and tells about the different traditions that are part of a Hanukkah celebration including the jelly doughnuts and dreidel.

My daughter's favorite holiday book!
By Michele
My daughter loves "George the monkey" as she calls him, and I was so excited to see there was a Hanukkah book about George. My favorite part is that they treated Hanukkah as a normal event. So much of the mainstream media specials about Jewish holidays treat Judaism as this foreign "other" religion to learn about. Like the Elmo Hanukkah book where Elmo visits his stereotypical Jewish friends for a Hanukkah party. Cute and all, but I prefer this Curious George book, where George and his friend go to a Hanukkah celebration as just part of their normal life, just as so many of us do. Walking home they even see menorahs in various neighbors' windows. Of course, it's also just a fun book, has cute illustrations, and is informative too. This book is great!

The Family Greene, by Ann Rinaldi

Cornelia Greene is fed up with gossip about her mother. Caty Littlefield Greene was once a beautiful young bride who lifted the troops’ spirits at Valley Forge, but Cornelia knows that rumors of Caty’s past indiscretions hurt Nathanael Greene, Cornelia’s adored father. Yet Caty claims that she’s just a flirt, and that flirting is a female necessity—a woman’s only means of power.

Cornelia’s concern with her mother’s reputation abruptly fades to the background when she learns that Nathanael Greene may not be her father. As she searches for the truth, she makes unexpected discoveries that lead her to a new understanding of love and family.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—Rinaldi once again takes readers to a historical time and place where strong female protagonists convincingly navigate their circumstances. Beginning in 1764 with Catherine Littlefield's formative years and her courtship and marriage to Nathanael Greene, readers experience life in colonial America on the eve of the American Revolution. Then Caty's daughter Cornelia takes over the narration, describing her life with her family on a plantation in Georgia. The theme of conflict, be it of the political, moral, familial, or gender variety, runs through this novel, and readers primarily experience it through Cornelia's eyes. Her manipulative, blackmailing older sister has told her that Pa is not her father, that Anthony Wayne is, and throughout the story Cornelia tries to learn the truth. Her reactions to her often-tenuous home environment and the weight of wondering who her biological father is demonstrate the strength of her character. In contrast, Caty's character fails under the pressure of her circumstances. The relationships Cornelia has with her brother George and with General Anthony Wayne, two of the few likable characters in the novel, provide a respite from the tumult in her life and for readers. However, the ambiguous ending, even if expected, is likely to leave readers dissatisfied.—Hilary Writt, Sullivan University, Lexington, KY

From Booklist
Beginning in 1764 and ending in 1803, this historical novel has two narrators. The first third is written from the point of view of Caty, who goes to live with her aunt and uncle, nine years later marries Nathanael Greene, and gives birth to their first child in General Washington's camp outside Boston in 1775. The theme of marital infidelity, an odd choice in a book for young people, is introduced early on, when 10-year-old Caty secretly reads her aunt's private letters from Benjamin Franklin and reassures her uncle regarding a rumored love affair. The novel's second strand begins in 1786, when Cornelia, Caty's daughter, tells of growing up on a Georgia plantation. Overshadowing her narrative is the question of whether her mother had an affair with General Wayne during the Revolutionary War and whether he is her biological father. In an appended note, Rinaldi comments on her historical research and separates fact, rumor, and fiction in the story. While she uses her gift for dramatizing family dynamics to good effect, the novel's long time frame, loosely connected narratives, and unattractive jacket art detract from its appeal. Grades 8-10. --Carolyn Phelan

Eh, Ann Rinadi, I may have fallen out of love with your writing.
By Nicole Rega
Eh, Ann Rinadi, I may have fallen out of love with your writing. I was excited to see that she had gone back to writing about the Revolutionary Period and the north, but alas the story ends up back in the south and after the war.

The story is separated into two sections. The first section focuses on Caty, who becomes the wife of Nathanael Greene. She's twelve years his junior but they fall in love anyway. She also learns that in a world in which women have limited means of agency she has to use her "womenly charms" in order to have any power. Or at least that's what the book claims.

The second section is told in the point of view of Caty's daughter Cornelia who may or may not be the love child of General Wayne and Caty.

Writing wise Caty and Cornelia as children have no real character differences between them. Caty as an adult becomes a harping shrew who is cruel to both her children and the men in her life. No explanation is given, she's just mean along with her oldest daughter Martha. This theme of the evil mother/stepmother and/or sister is common in Rinaldi's books. The men however, are usually saints. I'm getting tired of it.

There is also basically no plot in The Family Greene, sans the manufactured paternity drama. Where's the rich characterization al la The Fifth of March? Or Finishing Becca? Enough with the southern belles and dramatic family sagas Ann Rinaldi. It's not working.

PS. The cover? Depicting the completely wrong time period. The story ends in 1801. The women on the cover appear to be more of the antebellum or Civil War period.

Another good young adult historical novel by Ann Rinaldi.
By Rebecca Herman
In 1764, the year she turns ten years old, Caty Littlefield's mother dies and her father decides she must leave her home on Block Island to live on the mainland, where she can receive a proper education for a young lady in the home of her aunt and uncle. While living there, she learns of the growing unrest in the colonies that will eventually lead to war. She also meets her future husband, Nathanael Greene. Shortly after their marriage, the American Revolution begins and Caty eventually follows her husband, a general in the American army, to war.

Years later, Caty's own daughter, Cornelia, who is eight years old when her part of the story begins, is growing up on the Greene family's plantation in Georgia. Cornelia loves her father, a good man who is kind to his children, and is disturbed by her mother's behavior, as it appears she may be unfaithful to her husband. Cornelia is even more disturbed when her cruel older sister, Martha, suggests to Cornelia that Nathanael Greene may not be her father, that Cornelia may have been born from her mother's affair with General Anthony Wayne during the war. Cornelia is desperate to know the truth, but at the same time she is worried that the father who raised her will be deeply hurt by her mother's behavior and the possibility she may have had a child with another man.

Although not my very favorite book by Ann Rinaldi, I did enjoy reading The Family Greene. I especially liked the historical setting, since I have always enjoyed reading historical fiction set around the time of the American Revolution. Despite Cornelia's young age when the story begins (and she does seem a bit mature for her age at times, but some of that may be because in the 18th century children were expected to grow up faster), this is definitely a young adult book, due to the themes/plot which younger readers would likely have a hard time understanding. I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction set in this time period, or who have read and enjoyed other books by Ann Rinaldi.

"Great Period Book" "LOVED IT!!"
By L.Davis
The author Ann Rinaldi writes a gripping story of the struggle the Greene family goes though in the voices of Catharine(Caty) Littlefield Greene and her daughter Cornelia Greene. In the beginning the narrative is told though Catherine's viewpoint. In May of 1764 Catharine Littlefield is pulled away from the very foundation her parents brought her up on. At the age of 10 she was sent to live with her aunt and names sake Catharine and her uncle Greene because Caty's father wanted to give her a proper upbringing every young lady deserved. When she moved into the house, she realized her aunt Catharine had secrets of her own. Soon Caty learned the ways of the world and married Nathanael Greene who soon became second in command to General George Washington. She had several children with Nathanael Greene and lived a full and somewhat happy life. The story changes the point of view in part two called Cornelia. Cornelia is Caty's second daughter. Cornelia is a strong and willful child and in 1786 she learns a hard lesson in the struggles of life on the frontier. When her baby sister dies because her mom falls down, Cornelia carries the guilt like a jacket of shame on her shoulders. Her older and spiteful sister Martha Greene weaves a dangerous tale of deception about their mother to hurt Cornelia and plants the doubt in her head that Nathaniel Greene is not her legitimate father.

It is a wonderful historical fiction story. At the end of the story there is a author's note stating that the characters in her story truly existed but that the story it's self is fictional.

Tiger Trap: America’s Secret Spy War with China, by David Wise

For decades, while America obsessed over Soviet spies, China quietly penetrated the highest levels of government. Now, for the first time, based on numerous interviews with key insiders at the FBI and CIA as well as with Chinese agents and people close to them, David Wise tells the full story of China’s many victories and defeats in its American spy wars. Two key cases interweave throughout: Katrina Leung, code-named Parlor Maid, worked for the FBI for years, even after she became a secret double agent for China, aided by love affairs with both of her FBI handlers. Here, too, is the inside story of the case, code-named Tiger Trap, of a key Chinese-American scientist suspected of stealing nuclear weapons secrets. These two cases led to many others, involving famous names from Wen Ho Lee to Richard Nixon, stunning national security leaks, and sophisticated cyberspying. The story takes us up to the present, with a West Coast spy ring whose members were sentenced in 2010—but it surely will continue for years to come, as China faces off against America. David Wise’s history of China’s spy wars in America is packed with eye-popping revelations.

From Publishers Weekly
Wise (Spy) leads readers into the "the wilderness of mirrors that is counterintelligence" for this history of Chinese espionage against the U.S. He reveals how Chinese intelligence has used ethnic Chinese in the U.S. to penetrate American counterintelligence and steal American nuclear weapons data. While Wise explores a spectrum of Chinese spying efforts, from Sun-Tzu's The Art of War to cyberspies, he homes in on two sensational cases, code-named Parlor Maid and Tiger Trap, that epitomize their tactics. Parlor Maid was the colorful Katrina Leung, a Chinese-American double agent who slept with her FBI handlers while stealing their secrets, and Tiger Trap refers to the FBI's operation to expose China's moles inside America's nuclear weapons labs. Wise's conclusion is sobering—"China's spying on America is ongoing, current, and shows no sign of diminishing"—and his book is a fascinating history of Chinese espionage that should appeal to a diverse readership. Review
"Wise's conclusion is sobering--'China's spying on America is ongoing, current, and shows no signs of diminishing--and his book is a fascinating history of Chinese espionage that should appeal to a diverse readership."
-Publishers Weekly

"David Wise has done it again. This time it's China. He's taken us deep into the American efforts to root out Chinese spies here and abroad. As always, Wise is the master - writing with clarity and style abou thte murky and consequential underworld of nuclear espionage."
- Tom Brokaw

"David Wise is a master of the nonfiction thriller and, once again, he delivers a fact-filled inside account, with sources named and no one spared, including some very amorous and reckless FBI agents. There is an important message in Tiger Trap -- about the often overlooked threat posed by China's demonstrated ability to dig out America's most important military and economic secrets."
-Seymour M. Hersh

"David Wise has given us a rare combination in today's literary world -- a book that is great reading, while at the same time shedding light on a subject whose seriousness should concern every thinking American."
- Jim Webb, U.S. Senator from Virginia, author of Born Fighting, Fields of Fire

"Extraordinary. A stunningly detailed history of China's spy war with us - from sexy socialite double agents to "kill switches" implanted offshore in the computer chips for our electric grid. Wise remains the master."
– R. James Woolsey, former Director of Central Intelligence

"Forget Moscow rules, Lubyanka Prison, and KGB assassins. Today’s most threatening web of spies is spun out of Beijing and reaches from Silicon Valley to the Pentagon. David Wise has written a dead-on accurate narrative of major PRC cases against American targets. He names names, details agent tradecraft, and takes you into the courtroom and even a jail cell to witness the final unraveling of these sensational cases. You will never think about Chinese espionage the same way again. " - Peter Earnest, Executive Director of the International Spy Museum

DOES NOT INCLUDE CODE!
By T. Jacobs
These books usually come with some sort of online code/password so the student can watch videos & work online, as well as the teacher keeping track of lessons. These books DID NOT come with that code. Which is fine, however, it should have been stated in the ad so people were aware they needed to order somewhere else if they wanted/needed the code. Disappointed in this.
However, book was in great condition & arrived in a timely manner.

We purchased this because for some reason the 'free public education' my child is receiving does not include her access to the textbooks that sit in plain site or a teacher with any motivation. I would prefer it had more examples and that's why I gave it 3 stars but overall it has been a great help. Also, if one cannot afford a tutor than this is definitely an assist in that area.

Beef Stew with Tiny Onions and Cinnamon
— GREECE —
This Greek-style beef stew looks and tastes familiar, but it’s just different enough to make it special. Part of the secret to its elusive flavor is a dash of vinegar. I serve the stew with cauliflower and potatoes mashed with olive oil.

SERVES 6 TO 8

   3 tablespoons olive oil
3½ pounds beef chuck, cut into 2-inch pieces
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
   1 large onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped
   24 pearl onions, trimmed
   ½ cup dry red wine
   ¼ cup red wine vinegar
   1 28-ounce can tomato puree
   1 bay leaf
   ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Heat the oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Pat the beef dry with paper towels. Add the beef in batches, without crowding the pan. Brown it well on all sides, about 15 minutes per batch. With a slotted spoon, transfer it to a large slow cooker and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 10 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Stir in the pearl onions, wine, and vinegar. Bring the liquid to a simmer. Pour the mixture into the slow cooker. Stir in the tomato puree, bay leaf, and cinnamon.
Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, or until the beef is very tender. Discard the bay leaf. Serve hot.

Pulled Pork
— PORTUGAL —
Portuguese fishermen who settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts, brought with them a love for this flavorful stew. The traditional way to make it is in a clay pot called a cacoila, but a slow cooker is the perfect substitute. The shredded meat that emerges is still a favorite at street fairs and in local sandwich shops. Serve it over rice or pile it into crisp rolls and top with hot pickled peppers for a casual party.

SERVES 8

   2 tablespoons olive oil
3 pounds boneless pork shoulder roast, rolled and tied
   Salt and freshly ground pepper
   2 large onions, sliced
   4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
   ¼ cup red wine vinegar
¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
   2 tablespoons smoked paprika
   ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
   1 cup water

In a large skillet, heat the oil. Pat the pork dry with paper towels and brown it well on all sides, about 20 minutes. Transfer the pork to a large slow cooker and sprinkle it with salt and pepper.
Add the onions and garlic to the skillet and cook, stirring often, until tender and golden, about 10 minutes. Stir in the vinegar and bring it to a simmer. Pour the mixture over the pork. Add the spices, salt and pepper to taste, and water. Cover and cook for 8 to 10 hours, or until the pork is fork-tender.
Remove the pork to a cutting board, but leave the sauce in the slow cooker with the heat on. With two forks, tear the pork into bite-size pieces. Return the meat to the slow cooker to reheat and serve.

Coffee Caramel Flan
— SPAIN —
With canned sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk in the pantry, you can put this dessert together any time.

SERVES 8
   1 cup sugar
   ¼ cup water
   1 12-ounce can evaporated milk
1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
   2 large eggs
   2 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons instant espresso powder, dissolved in 1 tablespoon hot water

Combine the sugar and the water in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat, swirling the pan occasionally, until the sugar is dissolved. Simmer the mixture without stirring until it begins to turn brown around the edges, about 10 minutes. Gently swirl the pan until the syrup is evenly caramelized.
Protecting your hand with an oven mitt, pour the hot syrup into a 6-cup soufflé dish, turning the dish to coat the bottom evenly. Let cool until the caramel is just set.
In a bowl, whisk together the canned milks. Beat in the eggs, egg yolks, and espresso until blended. Pour the mixture into the soufflé dish.
Place the dish on a rack in a large slow cooker. Pour hot water to a depth of 1 inch around the dish. Cover and cook on high for 2 to 2½ hours, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
Carefully remove the dish from the slow cooker. Let cool slightly, then cover and refrigerate until chilled, several hours or overnight.
To serve, run a knife around the inside of the dish. Invert a serving plate on top and quickly invert the two. Carefully remove the soufflé dish, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the cream. Cut into wedges and serve.

Great Healthy Recipe Ideas
By Trixie L
During winter I love to take advantage of the slow cooker when making meals. Often, however, it is too easy to resort just to soup as the best slow cooker dinner option. As a vegetarian, I also am looking for healthy ways to make delicious meals.

The Mediterranean Slow Cooker by Michele Scicolone is full of delicious, healthy meal ideas, and while it is not a vegetarian cookbook, it has enough vegetarian recipes to make it worthwhile. With recipes from Turkey, Italy, and Spain, among other countries, there are all sorts of delicious flavors. Polenta with Herbs, Vegetable Bulgar Pilaf, Apricot Almond Cake, and Chickpea and Lentil Soup fill the pages of this cookbook, as do beautiful pictures and essential details about Mediterranean spices and cooking styles.

This book has recipes for vegetables, desserts, and main entrees, and makes delicious recipes that are even more impressive because they were made in a slow cooker with minimal effort. The Mediterranean Slow Cooker is a great find and makes healthy cooking on a weeknight even easier - it will definitely become part of my cookbook rotation.

A nice companion piece to the French and Italian Slow Cooker books; shines for desserts
By Bundt Lust
I own both of Michele's The Italian Slow Cooker and The French Slow Cooker books, and they are in frequent rotation in my Hamilton Beach Premiere Cookware 5-1/2-Quart Slow Cooker for their winning combination of authentic flavors and relatively easy prep.

I preordered her latest, Mediterranean Slow Cooker, and quickly bookmarked several recipes that caught my eye. In the French Slow Cooker, Michele demystified soufflés for the slow cooker. Here, you'll find a variety of egg dishes like spinach and feta omelet, spicy vegetable eggah, Israeli breakfast favorite shakshouka, and a delicate green bean and scallion torta that would all make fantastic brunch options.

The poached salmon in court-bouillon was a winner, especially when paired with the suggested tzatziki, and the shrimp with tomatoes and feta (my personal preference was to switch out the white wine in the sauce for red) was also a favorite. The crunchy mustard chicken diable has the ingenious solution of slow-cooking bone-in chicken thighs, then toasting panko on the stove and coating the chicken at the last minute so the topping remains crunchy (this would make a great picnic dish!). And the pork ragu with broken lasagna Maialino-style was an unexpected gem; the simple sauce is served over irregular sheets of lasagna noodles tossed with Parmigiano and arugula. Fans of lamb will find plenty to rejoice over, including numerous Greek recipes like Bandits' Lamb (stuffed with salty Greek cheese) and Middle Eastern lamb and pine nut meatballs.

Vegetarians will also find some offerings, such as red lentil soup, winter squash and chickpea soup, polenta with herbs, wheat berry tabbouleh, bulgur and toasted walnut pilaf, and farro with spring vegetables. Like her other slow cooker cookbooks, you'll also find "out of the pot" recipes that use precooked beans, etc.; here these offerings include a Greek country chickpea salad, hummus, and Turkish beet and goat cheese dip.

For me, the real star of the book was the desserts. The entire section is crammed full of intriguing finds, like several Greek-inspired cakes (sunny orange cake with orange syrup, walnut cake with cinnamon syrup), decadent cheesecakes (the first recipe I tried was the awesome cannoli cheesecake; see above for a photo) including Nutella, several flans, bread puddings, and fruit (blushing pomegranate pears, warm fruit compote with mascarpone sauce).

This is a worthy investment if you enjoy Italian, Spanish, and Greek food, and most of the ingredients should be easy to find at your local supermarket. Yes, there is some prep involved in the chopping and sautéing of veggies (and browning of meat) before cooking, but this adds a wealth of flavor to the final dish that is well worth the extra time (and if you have a slow cooker with a metal insert, you can sauté and cook in the same dish). The desserts alone are worth the cost of the book; Michele taught me that I can make showstopping cheesecakes in my slow cooker, a trick I never would have thought to try on my own! (I used Nordic Ware Leakproof Springform Pan, 7 Inch set on a Spice Ratchet 16812 Blossom Multi-Use Silicone Trivet, Black).

**Update 1/20: In addition to the cannoli cheesecake, I've also made the sunny orange cake with orange syrup (which is basically a revani or basbousa, in this case lightened by folding in whipped egg whites), coffee flan, and the chocolate hazelnut cheesecake (see photos above). Maybe it's just my particular slow cooker, but I found that my cakes baked much more quickly than the suggested times, so check at least 30 minutes before the book times to play it safe.

***Update 5/26: I have also tried the roasted beets and beet and goat cheese dip, basic recipe for chickpeas and the country chickpea salad and hummus, and next up is the coconut flan (everybody RAVES about the coffee caramel flan, so I wanted to try the variation!). I have enjoyed every dish I've tried from the Mediterranean Slow Cooker!

Simple and delicious
By Nicholas M. Sullivan
I have tried five recipes in this book so far and all have turned out great. Her instructions and directions are precise. Follow them! I let one chicken dish cook on too long, and the chicken fell off the bone. Didn't hurt it much. I tried the "Portuguese Pulled Pork," and it turned out great. If I didn't love Tennessee barbecue so much, this would become a staple. The greatest thing about her recipes -- in addition to being delicious -- is that she uses very few of the rare, hard to find items and expensive trendy ingredients that seem to be in vogue with so many of the famous celebrity chefs these days, especially in the ethnic and international cookbooks. (You've seen them: "1 cup of fresh feta cheese from black goats herded by monks and grazed on grass on the north slope of Mt. Athos above 2,000 feet." An obvious exageration, of course, but you get the idea). When she does use something exotic, she always includes at least two or three suggested substitutes. As most of these recipes are adapted for a slow cooker, it is entirely possible that if you're in a hurry you can do a stove top cook for a lot of them. I haven't tried this yet, but a lucious-looking omlettes look very tempting to whip up for breakfast. One disappointment is that I would like to see more pictures. I rarely cook a dish that doesn't have a picture. I like to see what the dish is supposed to look like when it is done, and there nothing like a great photograph to whet my appetite for the dish and make me want to cook it. But, there are enough pictures to keep me busy for awhile.

Annexed, by Sharon Dogar

Everyone knows about Anne Frank and her life hidden in the secret annex – but what about the boy who was also trapped there with her?

In this powerful and gripping novel, Sharon Dogar explores what this might have been like from Peter’s point of view. What was it like to be forced into hiding with Anne Frank, first to hate her and then to find yourself falling in love with her? Especially with your parents and her parents all watching almost everything you do together. To know you’re being written about in Anne’s diary, day after day? What’s it like to start questioning your religion, wondering why simply being Jewish inspires such hatred and persecution? Or to just sit and wait and watch while others die, and wish you were fighting.

As Peter and Anne become closer and closer in their confined quarters, how can they make sense of what they see happening around them?

Anne’s diary ends on August 4, 1944, but Peter’s story takes us on, beyond their betrayal and into the Nazi death camps. He details with accuracy, clarity and compassion the reality of day to day survival in Auschwitz – and ultimately the horrific fates of the Annex’s occupants.

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up–On July 13, 1942, 15-year-old Peter van Pels and his parents entered the attic that became their home for two years. Peter is angry that he is hiding and not fighting Nazis. He is also not happy to be sharing cramped living quarters with the Franks, especially know-it-all Anne. In this novel, Dogar "reimagines" what happened between the families who lived in the secret annex immortalized in Anne Frank's diary. In doing so, she creates a captivating historical novel and fully fleshes out the character of Peter, a boy whom teens will easily relate to. He agonizes over whether he will ever make love to a girl, fights with his parents, sulks, and questions God and religion before finally maturing into a man. While this novel focuses on his adolescent struggles in the face of unthinkable adversity, the most compelling dilemma he faces is figuring out who he is. When Anne accuses him of deserting his people, Peter laments, "I want so many things, but what I need is to know who I am. Because if I don't know that, I can only ever be what they say I am. A Jew." Even in the concentration camp, he fights against being treated as an animal, is angered at being stripped of his name, and regrets that he may not be able to tell his story. But he does, and readers are enlightened and deeply moved as a result. Annexed is a superb addition to the Holocaust literature, and should not be missed.Wendy Scalfaro, G. From Booklist
Joining the growing list of titles based on Anne Frank’s diary, this novel is written from the viewpoint of Peter van Pels, who is nearly 16 in 1942 when he and his parents join the Franks in hiding in their Amsterdam attic. Meticulous about distinguishing fact from fiction, the author points out that Anne’s view in The Diary may have contradicted Peter’s story. Here, she irritates him at first, and she invades his privacy in the crowded space. Then he and Anne get closer, flirt, and kiss. Peter asks her not to put their relationship in her diary, which raises a crucial question: What did Anne leave out? Interspersed with Peter’s first-person, diary-like accounts of life in hiding are searing reports of his last days in the death camps, where he remembers the attic as he witnesses the horrors at Auschwitz and Mauthausen. With its historical and intimate details, as well as the questions about The Diary’s connections and omissions, this moving novel is sure to find a wide YA audience. Grades 8-12. --Hazel Rochman

Review
"While Annexed does not depend upon a prior reading of The Diary of a Young Girl for interest or understanding, readers of that book will appreciate the opportunity to see Anne Frank's story given a benefit it could not have: hindsight."—The Horn Book, starred review

"Readers are enlightened and deeply moved....Annexed is a superb addition to the Holocaust literature, and should not be missed."—School Library Journal, starred review

"Showing equal skill in bringing history to life and in capturing the spirit of a young man searching for his identity amid chaos, Dogar has written a novel as provocative as it is devastating."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

"The lines between written record, educated guess, and fictional construct are fascinatingly blurred here. . .made all the more so when readers consider the role perspective, translation, and editing play in the written record. The book’s skillful synthesis of all these facets should stimulate discussion about the nature of history, fiction, and truth."—The Bulletin, starred review

"[Annexed] is compassionate and thoughtful, told in a very intimate way. Dogar gets the claustrophobia of the annexe across brilliantly, as it escapes in pointless bickering and petty resentments, but the picture of vital, interesting people with hopes, dreams, loves and ambitions rises equally vividly from the pages. Peter himself is wonderfully drawn: painfully shy, introspective and independent of thought."—The Book Bag (UK)

Gave Peter a voice
By Alison's
Annexed made my heart ache for Anne Frank all over again.

What girl doesn't remember reading Anne Frank's diary for the first time?

This is Sharon Dogar's fictional story of what happened in the Annex and afterwards, as imagined from Peter Van Pels's perspective.

Much controversy surrounded this book before it was even published. I can only offer my opinion of the book, and I will try to weigh in on whether or not I agree with the criticisms made to Ms. Dogar and her fictional work.

She writes in the preface:

"In this novel, based on history, I try to imagine what it might have been like to have actually lived with Anne Frank. To become the target of her love, and to be so cruelly torn apart from her, just as liberation was coming to Holland."

The novel is broken into two parts - the first of which was the time Peter and his family spent in hiding in the Annex with the Franks, the second was what happened after they were found.

I believe the first part of the novel is that which is attracting so much criticism. While I am not a scholar when it comes to Anne Frank, I can say that there were some scenes in this first part that rubbed me the wrong way. Was this because I did not like someone messing with the Anne Frank we know and love, or was it just because I didn't particularly care for a certain scene? I am not sure.

On the other hand, it was nice to see more of Peter and the Van Pels, especially his mother, whom I remember disliking from Anne's diary. I think the hardest thing for me, as it probably was for many readers, was that Annexed made me question the whole truth of Anne's diary. Even though we all know there is more than one side to every story, many of us have embraced Anne's story since we were children. To have her story questioned in any way is blasphemy to many. But, I think Sharon Dogar wrote this first part with no ill intentions. In fact, she admits to changing some of the minor facts around, while somehow making Anne Frank more real and more accessible to me than ever before.

I usually enjoy a fictional story about true historical characters - and Annexed was no different. I enjoyed seeing what might have happened in the Annex, or how things may have happened slightly differently. Even though some people may have found the differences between Annexed and the diary disrespectful to Anne Frank's memory, I did not. I wish there were more we knew about her. Even Otto Frank admitted that the Anne Frank in the diary was not the Anne he knew. I wish Peter had kept a diary, or wrote letters or that there is more of an account of him. For now, I will just enjoy Ms. Dogar's conceptualization of Peter's point of view.

On to the second part of the book. After they were discovered...

This is where you may as well rip my heart out of my chest and stomp on it. The Franks and the Van Pels were on the last train into Auschwitz from Holland. This is a fact. The last train. If Anne Frank had not been on that train, she would have only been in her eighties today, and more of her writing would have been shared with the world. The last train. I can't quite get that out of my head.

The rest of the story follows the Van Pels and the Franks out of Holland, on the trains, into the lines (where Peter was so afraid and confused, he regrets how easily it was to let go of his mother's hand.), and on to where he would live, work, and slowly die. This is where Sharon Dogar painstakingly researched the path the Franks and Van Pels could have taken, what may have happened to them, where they may have been sent, and how they may have lived and died. All except for Otto Frank, Anne's father. The man who tried to hide and save them all, he was the only one who survived.

Anyone who has read Elie Wiesel's Night, Spiegelman's Maus, or Zusak's The Book Thief can appreciate how carefully the second part of Annexed was crafted. The fictional Peter described his days, but mostly how he tried not to remember his life before, the happiness he felt, and the girl he loved. Anne loved Peter, that much we know is true, and I, for one, was glad that Sharon Dogar gave Peter a voice with which he could love Anne in return.

Do I agree with the controversy? Not even a little bit. I believe the the author was as respectful as one could be to Anne Frank, while allowing herself some creative freedom. Ultimately, this is a work of fiction most lovingly written about real people beloved throughout the world.

Peter's POV
By Z Hayes
For those who loved The Diary of Anne Frank, and wondered what Peter's thoughts and feelings were during the two years or so he spent with Anne and the other occupants of the Secret Annexe, this book just might be of interest. Though it is a work of historical fiction, the author does put research into her work, and tries to convey Peter's voice in a credible and compelling manner, and I think for the most part she succeeds, though this is no Diary of Anne Frank.

Anne's 'voice' which rang out so clearly throughout her amazing diary is missing here, and what readers get instead is Peter's perspective of things. It is Peter's struggles both internal and external that readers get to witness here. Peter's sense of loss and derailment from an ordinary life is well-portrayed - the loss of privacy, where the most inane and intimate moments are exposed to others, all living in close proximity to each other, is conveyed in painfully excruciating detail. Here, we get to read about how Peter's relationship with Anne might have developed - from someone he found annoying to someone who shared his feelings and thoughts, and to something much more. Unlike Anne's diary which ends shortly before their discovery and arrest by the Gestapo, Peter's story takes readers beyond that point into the actual camps. The author recreates with some measure of credibility the day-to-day living in the hellish conditions of the concentration camps till the very end.

Is it a must-read? I guess it depends on what one is looking for - if it is an actual retelling of what happened in the Annex from Peter's POV, then obviously not because we can't really know for sure what actually happened except for what we know from Anne's diary and Otto Frank's accounts plus those who helped the occupants of the Annexe such as Miep Gies, etc. Peter never kept a diary and he did not survive the war - yet, if you have ever wondered about Peter, then this might prove to be an interesting reimagining. Because of the sexual content in the writing (masturbation etc.), I would suggest this for young adult readers, grades 8 and up.

great historical fiction
By A Customer
In 1942, the Nazis continue to deploy the Final Solution. In Holland, brave Ditch hide Jews in their homes as the Nazis and local traitors hunt them down like animals. The van Pels and Frank families and others are hidden in an annex of an Amsterdam office building. Whereas optimist Anne keeps a dairy, fifteen years old Peter van Pels believes he is an artist with no canvas. He moans his fate. However, he also muses about God and observes his fellow rats scurry to survive. He thinks Anne is a child, but over the two plus years of intimate concealment, he begins to find he is attracted to her having moved on pass his infatuation with Liese. Over the next couple of years his interest changes as the Allies invasion of Normandy brings hope and a kiss of Anne makes him believe they and their fellow Jews have a future.

However, philosophical and mordant unlike Anne, his beliefs are affirmed when they are betrayed and taken away to various concentration camps. Now as he awaits death in 1945 at Mauthalsen concentration camp in Austria, he thinks back to the horrific war years when God chose to abandon his people.

This is a great historical fiction tale that uses The Diary of Anne Frank to tell the tale of life in the Annex from the perspective of Peter and limited historical record of what happened to him and the others (enhanced by Sharon Dogar) transported to deadly camps. Ms. Dogar captures the essence of Peter (at least from Anne's viewpoint) and brilliantly fills in gaps especially in the last quarter of the book that makes up the Part 2 Diaspora. Except for the deniers, this is a super companion piece to the classic as the readers must never forget any ethnic cleansing even if it is painful to do so. Also for another perspective (based on NPR and not my read yet), the audience should consider Francine prose's reflective look at Anne Frank: The Book, The Life, The Afterlife.
