Tim O’Brien received the 1979 National Book Award for Going After Cacciato. Among his other books are The Things They Carried, Pulitzer Finalist and a New York Times Book of the Century, and In the Lake of the Woods, winner of the James Fenimore Cooper Prize. He was awarded the Pritzker Literature Award for lifetime achievement in military writing in 2013.

Brought up other things to think about

My favorite uncle was in Special Forces in VN, came back a greatly changed man and to this day will not speak of his experience over there but did write a book--in which he tried to write down what happened but I know he seriously cleaned it up and sanitized it greatly. I do remember asking him if what Lt. Calley was being accused of actually happened "over there" and my uncle very quietly said that things like that happened a lot, maybe not to the same extend or number but it was fairly common place. O'Brien's writings on VN have helped me understand a little better about what the boys (oh, and they were just boys, average age for a soldier in VN was 19) went through, how there was no sane transition from home to being there to home again (if you made it), how the generals and politicians made the war into something else and the soldiers into automatons that just did their (gen'ls and pol'ns) bidding. Lake of the Wood brought it home--'cause I know a lot of vets suffer with nightmares and other psychological/emotional things that they don't know what to do with. I did think the story in Lake was a little contrived, too many things that don't jive going on (but I don't remember what CSI forensics were like during the time period the story takes place in; I know by today's forensics there would be no mystery murder). But the deeper troubles the main character had from both his own childhood growing up under an alcoholic father and then immediately going to Vietnam are real. The story made me research the My Lai massacre--because when it happened there was so much media and political manipulation it was hard to tell what was real and what was exaggerated and--those of us who hadn't fought in that war had no real idea of what a helter skelter it was. Body counts and all that--I mean, great way to turn normal, honest, wonderful young [men--but there were women there too] into warped human beings who will spend the rest of their lives bent. The VN war to the greater degree brought a completely different way of making war, which has now been transferred to the Middle East. Anyway, O'Brien made me think, made me research what really happened (40 or so years after when maybe more unspun info is available) to help me understand how incidents like My Lai could have, and did, often happen. War is hell, in so many ways.

The title story is worth whatever you pay for the book itself. It takes you to Vietnam, in that time, with that platoon - It takes your breath away.

The things they carried.

I would never have read this book except it was on the reading list for my book club. War is so horrible. How it effects the minds of the people that experience it first hand. what they do and think while they are in the midst of it. Insane in the middle of insanity. There was a man at our book club study that had been in Vietnam. He said this was his favorit book about the war. He choked up. So did the rest of us.

He has devoted much of his life to studying these animals and persuading their human neighbors of the importance of their survival. Montgomery's enthusiasm translates well to the page and will have readers cheering for the entourage as they attempt to spot a snow leopard. This slender book abounds with information, including stories of McCarthy's rare, powerful past encounters with the cat, as well as zoological and cultural sidebars. Bishop's trademark stunning photography fills out the book with breathtaking views of the extreme environs of Central Asia and warm portraits of the charming people who live there. An outstanding and highly recommended book

Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop have produced a beautiful book about an expedition with scientists who study and protect snow leopards in Mongolia. Nic Bishop's photographs take us along on the expedition. They capture the generous nature of the people and Mongolia's vast sense of scale -- a scale that makes you realize that there are very few snow leopards out there. Sy Montgomery's text drives the story. It brings out the excitement, the suspense, the frustrations, the challenges, and the perseverance of the scientists. Much of scientific research is like chasing a ghost -- elusive. This is well reflected in this outstanding and highly recommended book.

Wonderful travelogue and overview of biology field work, but not many photos of actual snow leopards.

This is a travelogue of a Western biologist and conservationist in Mongolia trying to track highly elusive and rare snow leopards. Despite its target age of 4-8th graders and the arresting cover image, there are very very few images of snow leopards in this book - either a 3/4 image of the head and shoulder, or a small snapshot of the researcher with a tranquilized leopard. The focus is on the research process, people, culture, terrain. The back cover of the book is much more a reflection of the focus. So, it was a bit disappointing for my 2nd grade child who adores this animal. The reality is, snow leopards are rare and hard to track. The book reflects this. It's a reality check. But if you are seeking a picture book of snow leopards so you can really see what they look like, their proportions, what their cubs look like, how they hunt or feed or socialize... this is not your book. I checked out http://www.amazon.com/Explore-My-World-Snow-Leopards/dp/1426317034/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER which has many more photos and more of an overview of snow leopards in general... but much less challenging text and not as much of a conservation message.

Its about a scientist and his journey to save snowleopards with the help of his friends, family, and villagers around the world! This book is a must read!

Can anything by OZ be less than perfect ?

I must admit that Amos Oz is my favorite writer. The themes and stories are of course wonderful but what I have really learned to appreciate are the beautiful phrases in his work. It's amazing that a book written originally in Hebrew has made me appreciate English even more. I read his books differently than others, slowly, smoothly, I do not gobble them.

All of his books are good, but this one is a little bit darker than the others. To really enjoy him, start with one of his others and come back to this one.

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

This was not really a level one reader set as I was expecting

My son has loved Curious George for a long time---since he was a toddler really. He was in Kindergarten last year and was learning how to read so I bought this series thinking he would be excited to read it. This was not really a level one reader set as I was expecting and he got quite discouraged reading it. Not surprisingly, he was very excited to get the books and wanted to read them but was upset when he had to struggle through too many weird words. This is not necessarily a flaw just something to point out. He could probably read it now that he is in he summer before 1st grade and this may be a good time to revisit this series. It is very possible we would have a totally different experience now but this review is based on the experience we had when I first bought it for him.

About the Author

The Reys were born in Hamburg, Germany. Hans Augusto Rey (1898-1977) met his wife-to-be, Margret (1906-1996), at a party in her father’s home in Germany; when he first caught a glimpse of her, she was sliding down the banister. In their twenties and thirties they lived in Paris and in Rio de Janeiro, where Hans sold bathtubs in villages along the Amazon River. Eventually Cambridge, Massachusetts, became the Reys’ home and community. Throughout their lives the Reys created many lively books together, including SPOTTY, PRETZEL, and lift-the-flap books such as HOW DO YOU GET THERE? The manuscript of the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and CURIOUS GEORGE was published in 1941. Their incorrigible little monkey has become an American icon, selling millions of books and capturing the hearts of readers everywhere. CURIOUS GEORGE has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. I love this book! We bought it as a gift for our daughter for her birthday. I love that it teaches her to write thank you notes and it even has a couple of thank you notes in the back that you can use yourself.

Well, here it is--the final installment. I'm sorry it's taken so long for The Genius Wars to reach you over there in the U.S., but at last your wait is over!

I've had a lot of messages on my website asking me if this is really the end of the series. My answer continues to be: yes, this really is the last we'll see of Cadel, if only because I've pretty much tied up all the loose ends in his story. At the conclusion of Evil Genius, Cadel was left in a kind of limbo. At the end of Genius Squad, Prosper English was still looming in the background. (It was quite obvious to me that Prosper wasn't going to just vanish into thin air, leaving Cadel to get on with his life.) But now, in The Genius Wars, I've sorted things out between Cadel and Prosper. And since the whole series revolves around their relationship, there's nowhere else for me to go.

Besides, I'm not a computer expert. I'm not a math whiz, either. That's why these books have been incredibly hard to write; if my friend Richard Buckland hadn't helped me, I wouldn't have been able to finish them at all. For those of you who aren't familiar with Richard, he's a bona fide computer expert--and a math whiz, too--and he appears in The Genius Wars under his own name because I felt that he deserved some kind of recognition. (You can view many of his university lectures on YouTube, by the way; his lecture on Turing is particularly fine.)

Of course, if someone offered me a million dollars to write a fourth book, I'd be horribly tempted. How could any author not be? But I'd be dancing with the devil if I did accept an offer like that, knowing full well that trying to write a fourth book would not only half-kill me--it would be downright wrong. In a funny sort of way, it would also be unfair to Cadel. You'll know what I mean, once you read the book.

So happy reading! And thanks for all the positive feedback you've given me over the years. I wouldn't have been able to keep slogging on without it.

Cadel Piggot Greenaius has a new family and hopes for a brighter future, but a series of “accidents” convinces him that Prosper, whom he mistakenly thought was his father, has both discovered the truth of their relationship and thinks the 15-year-old boy might be meddling in his evil schemes. Cadel’s story, started in Evil Genius (2007) and continued in Genius Squad (2008), careens to a finish in this book, which also includes several characters from previous titles. Jinks is an entertaining writer, which helps ameliorate the thin plotting. Her imaginative use of technology, which may have some readers seeking an idiot’s guide to programming, creates some truly tense moments, and Cadel is Everyman enough for readers to root for in the thick of things. Neglectfully plotted and sloppily written

In The Genius Wars, the third book in Catherine Jinks' Evil Genius series, the teenaged computer hacker Cadel Greeniaus continues his technological battle against Prosper English, the criminal mastermind who was until recently was thought to be Cadel's father. While the brilliant Cadel is shuffled from one safe house to another, Prosper's old associates launch attacks on Cadel's friends and family, and Cadel takes a leading role in hunting down Prosper's lackeys.

What frustrated me about Genius Wars was the utter perfection of Cadel's character. Cadel figures out every problem, is literally never wrong, and can hack into any system with ease. Cadel's always-right ideas, often formed in seconds, are always accepted by the sceptical authority figures that Cadel seemingly struggles to convince; he never suffers failure in any department.

While lavishing attention on Cadel's limitless genius, Jinks systematically ignores every other character in the book. The series' ensemble cast of characters, whom previous installments explored and made three-dimensional, receive little to no development in this installment. Several new characters are introduced, but none of them are remotely fleshed out by the end of the book. Even with all this focus on Cadel, the book still ends unresolved for both him and every other character.

Perhaps the only non-Cadel character to receive development in the book is Gazo, an old friend of Cadel's from the sham criminal college he attended in the first book, Evil Genius. In past books, Gazo has had to wear a special suit to regulate his anxiety-driven superpower of releasing a stinking cloud noxious enough to bring on unconsciousness. By this point in the series, he is mostly capable of regulating it, and has begun to reluctantly use it as a weapon. Gazo aspires to be a police officer, but fears that Cadel's adoptive father Saul, a detective, will not allow him into the force. Gazo is easily the series' most interesting character, and yet his story lines are all dangling by the end, disappointingly unresolved.

While most of the book's major characters were introduced in the previous books in the series, the book also introduces several characters, all of whom have tantalizing plot hooks that receive no resolution. Cadel is now attending college, and Richard Buckland, who teaches Introductory Programming, pays a particular, strange, and unexplained attention to Cadel. Boyd, another student in the class, is a klutz who always wears fingerless gloves, leading Cadel's friend to insist that Boyd has to be hiding something, in a potential story that is never explored.

There are more students in the class, all of whom are introduced in a "wardriving" surveillance mission: Duke is a hippie with a missing tooth who has lost jobs and girlfriends due to literally spending days at a time playing video games. Egon always dresses in the same sweatshirt and wears the same sullen scowl. Vijay is an easily forgettable boy who shows up to the meeting in an impeccable suit. None of these characters serve any measurable purpose in the plot: they have no motivations, and could just as easily be emotionless cardboard cutouts.

This is all evident of Jinks' tendency to introduce new characters merely as plot objects. These characters are means to an end: they have no story lines of their own, and they make no progress toward being developed characters, rather only as a checkpoint for the plot. Jinks drops hints of development, then fails to follow through on this potential. It's an incredibly sloppy way of writing.

Even while ignoring new characters, Jinks still finds time to ignore the old characters. Cadel's best friend Sonja, a girl with cerebral palsy, is injured early on, and is essentially out of the picture for the remainder of the book. Fiona, Cadel's adoptive mother and newlywed to the detective Saul, does nothing but act confused and fret about Cadel's safety. Even Prosper English, the series' primary antagonist, appears only in the final chapters.

Ultimately, Genius Wars is a readable book, if not an immensely flawed one. The use of technology raises eyebrows (Cadel and Sonja are nearly killed by a rogue text message that activates a Bluetooth connection), interesting characters from past books are shafted in favour of Cadel, and the new characters have no reason to be in the plot. Every theory and speculation of Cadel's is right, and everything in the book is exactly as it appears. The book ends unresolved for virtually every character, and it abounds with messy writing throughout. The Genius Wars is a carelessly written book with flat characterization, few surprises, and a single-minded devotion to its primary character. It's remarkable just how lackluster it is.

An exciting conclusion to a terrific trilogy

In this, the third and final book in the saga of Cadel Piggott (now Cadel Greeniaus), the boy genius has at last been able to abandon his life of deception, crime and illegal hacking, imposed on him by his purported father, Prosper English, and has settled down into a much-desired normal life with a kindly police detective, Saul Greeniaus, and his social-worker wife, Fiona. Things are going along just fine, when Cadel's best friend, Sonja, who has cerebral palsy, is attacked, and bad things continue to happen to Cadel and those close to him. Evidently, the malevolent Prosper English is behind all this, and Cadel must track him down.

Like the first two books, this well-written cyber-thriller is packed with suspense, lively characters you can care about, and a complex, intriguing plot that keeps you turning the pages. I was a bit taken aback by the ending, which was not quite what I'd expected. It's not a bad ending, but it left me wanting more. Ms. Jinks, however, tells us that this is the final book about Cadel's adventures. Nonetheless, this is still an exciting, well-crafted trilogy that shouldn't be missed. Be sure to read "Evil Genius" and "Genius Squad" before you start this one!

Techno-Potter?

I am going to start out by saying that I had not read the first two books in this series before I read "The Genius Wars", but there was enough back-story worked into this installment that I never felt lost or confused.

I enjoyed "The Genius War", finding it to be based upon an interesting premise, though one which might have been arrived at by the following recipe: "Toss a couple of Artemis Fowl books and a volume or two of Harry Potter into a shredder, sift together and bake at 350-deg. for 45 minutes... ".

Seriously though, the adventures of Cadel Greeniaus (née Piggott) and his disparate group of brainiac, computer genius friends and associates are quite entertaining -- from criminal super-hacker in training to boy genius computer expert police associate to mild-mannered high-school-aged college computer science student, Cadel has gone through some changes since his debut in "Evil Genius". There is a lot happening in a short span of time here, but the action is not so rapid-fire as to be difficult to follow. The characters involved are described well enough for a reader who has not read the first two books to have sufficient sense of them to understand how they fit into the story and what their roles are.

Readers who are not too familiar with computer technology and terminology might be a bit at sea, but just as readers of Patrick O'Brien's seafaring tales may follow the larger storyline by glossing over the overtly technically nautical passages by saying to themselves "and then they went aloft and did something clever with the sails", readers who are less than familiar with gigabytes, USB drives, CGI, and CCTV can gloss over these bits by saying to themselves "and then Cadel and his friends did something clever with a computer", freeing themselves to follow the larger storyline, which is that of Cadel realizing that his nemesis, Prosper English, is after him again, and how he goes about tracking him down in order to eliminate that threat from his life. In both examples the more technically savvy reader will find a bit more depth in the story while the less technically adept need not feel left out -- the basic human situations of the tale are, overall, more important than the technical details.

As an American I found the Australian locations exotic; as a Californian, I found the California locations familiar -- this was an agreeable combination. I also found Cadel to be a sympathetic character; a youngster striving for normality and a chance to pursue his talents and interests in a satisfying and useful life. The fact that he must face physical danger (and try to protect his friends from the danger they face just because they are his friends) and intellectual challenges to follow that path is the basis of the story.

I pondered a 4-star rating for this book, but while it is generally well-written, it falls a bit short of my standards for a 4-star read, partially for its slightly derivative premise and partly for the mildly tiresome repetition of the "boy-genius-is-increasingly-frustrated-by-necessity-of-dealing-with-less-brilliant-adults-who-control-his-world" theme (which is also roughly parallel to a recurring theme in the Harry Potter stories). Readers who are in this book's target audience might not discern these aspects, and might well be less discriminating in their assessment of the pacing and the cohesiveness of the plot - overall, it should play well with the target audience.

Her dreams are dashed, however, when the German government begins shutting down Jewish businesses and threatening to send Jews to prison camps. Two young women leave Germany for England in 1938. Aryan Anna has a kitchen maid’s job waiting at Starkers, a gracious country estate, but she is really there to be a plant for Nazi sympathizers. Half-Jewish Hannah, raised in her father’s cabaret, is going to Starkers as well. She is a distant relative of Lord Liripip, and his third wife has grudgingly agreed to take Hannah in as things become more perilous abroad. But their same-day arrival leads to an identity mix-up when the lord’s son, Teddy, assumes the more regal Anna is “upstairs,” and vivacious Hannah, “downstairs.” Just as Shakespeare did in his comedies, Sullivan is able to string out this confusion in a sprightly (albeit sometimes stereotypical) manner, even as serious undertones abound. She also throws a nod to P. G. Wodehouse in her depiction of the upper classes, whose ability to cope with change is always underwhelming. Hannah is a breath of fresh air both for her hosts and for readers, who will enjoy rooting for her. Grades 10-12. --Ilene Cooper

Odd mish-mash of lightheartedness and dark circumstances

Love by the Morning Star is a sort of Princess and the Pauper story, although neither girl is a princess nor a pauper. Anna is an English girl and daughter of a foreigner-hating grocer. Hannah is German and is the half Jewish daughter of a cabaret owner in Berlin. When life becomes dangerous in Berlin, Hannah's parents send her to live in England for her safety. At the same time, Anna's father has arranged for her to be placed in the same household as a maid/spy. Each girl is mistaken for the other and, for their own reasons, swap roles. What follows is a rather painful comedy of errors as each girl falls in love with a young man, who doesn't necessarily realize which young lady he's courting. Of course, in the end, all's well that ends well so everything turns out right.
The book is fairly worldly when it comes to sex and male/female relations. It's not written badly, but just seems unnecessary in a romance aimed at this particular age group. Also, some of the main characters just aren't very likeable. Anna is a bit of a nit-wit and Teddy is, quite frankly, not good enough for Hannah. The bit about Teddy's mother at the very end of the book also seemed particularly unnecessary to me. Granted, the woman was not a pleasant or sympathetic character, but still. Overall, this was a pleasant enough book to read once, but I don't see myself going out of my way to read it again.

Not My Favorite

I had a hard time getting into this book. The writing is choppy and the story didn't flow well for me. The premise seems great and the cover and title are indeed eye catching. It would seem that this should be a good book, but somehow the author doesn't deliver as expected and the result is less than first rate.

If this is targeted to 7th or 8th graders, it's not a good target base and a higher age is recommended but then I am not certain this make a great teen novel either. This is written in an old fashioned way which makes it hard to follow-sometimes this is a good thing but it's a basic try in this regard and doesn't come off as overly clever. I found myself rereading passages that didn't hold much interest for me in the first place.

The serious nature of Nazi Germany and the situations of the book don't tie in well together in this comedy of errors. This story is a hodge podge of been there/done that in a somewhat, inferior manner. The situations of the book could be also risque for the average eleven or twelve year old, unless they've been around the block a few times.

I am a bit disappointed in this book as the description sounded like it would be quite an entertaining read.

Quite awful. Not suitable for young readers despite "grades 7 and up" listing. Serious editing issues.

First, I don't understand why this is listed in the imprint "Books for Young Readers." The main characters aren't particularly young, and there are plenty of sexual references, such as "he'd paid court to many nubile performers over the last seventeen years," something about lecherous old men and girls in pinafores, etc. I'm not saying books for this age group can't contain sexual references in context, but there just seems to be a spotlight on it here.

As well, I think the vocabulary and general references are too advanced for 7th graders: ". . . her mother's older sister had been married to a little man called Peregrine for a few months before she and her baby died . . . (A few months only? Hannah suddenly wondered, counting to nine and discovering possible scandal.)" My daughter is in 6th grade, and this would go right over her head. I don't think one more year will make that much difference.

From an editorial point of view (and we want young readers to experience good writing, right?) this book has very serious issues with jumps in point of view (POV). I actually edit fiction, and writers should stick with one character's POV (what that character can hear, think, etc.) for an entire scene (or chapter) before making a switch. Otherwise, it's called "head hopping." If you think about a Harry Potter book, for instance, when Harry is waiting for his turn in the tri-wizards' tournament, the narration is limited to what he can hear and see as he waits. Readers don't get to know what's going on in the arena, or what the competitors are thinking. In contrast, this book hops all over the place. At the bottom of p. 18, we see Hannah's POV:"Hannah saw the tremor of terror cross her father's face." On the next page, without a scene change, we see her father's POV: "He'd been safe so far. Surely his luck would last." The next page gives Cora's POV:"this was the only way she knew . . ." Most publishing companies won't accept a book with POV errors; at the least, an editor should have fixed them.

The story line itself is ridiculous. Is it supposed to be black humor? Or is the writing just that awful? I couldn't really tell. The subject matter is so serious, and yet the characters and their antics are so cocky in comparison. Several of the reviewers here have described this as "light." Yes, there were some successful TV comedies set during the war, but in general, a book with this background just doesn't feel light.

And how about this as you lead to the ending: "'If you don't, I'll cut off your pretty face bit by bit, and then afterward I'll . . . ' He whispered something in her ear, something so inhumanly filthy that if she'd had the means she would have killed herself right then, just to escape the merest possibility of it ever coming to pass." Perfect for the middle school classroom, right?
