The best dictionary for kids I've seen yet

I love this dictionary! (I never thought I would use the words "love" and "dictionary" in the same sentence.) I'm a homeschooling mom and this one is completely different from the average "student dictionary". The pages are made of quality paper (not that newsprint stuff) and sort of glossy with a very nice type that is easy to read. There is a pronunciation guide on every page so you're not having to flip around each time you need one. The entries are offset by engaging, colorful illustrations. For example, when you look up "periodic table" you will actually see a periodic table of the elements. I'm so glad I added this to our homeschooling resources.

great resource for kids and parents

As parents we decided that it just isn't right to "google" every question that our kids ask. To have a dictionary designed for the youngsters eye, is very resourceful. It has been great to teach our young children to pick up a book and look information up without relying on technology. My 5 year old will sit down and just page through looking at the pictures and asking questions. I give it an A+

We have several dictionaries at home, but none of them seem to suit my kids - grade 3 and 6. Their "children's" or "student" dictionaries were generally too simplistic and didn't have definitions for the words they needed; the adult or collegiate dictionaries had all the words, but the definitions were too complicated for them to understand. This dictionary strikes the perfect balance. It has, I think, 65,000 definitions, twice that of most other student dictionaries, and the definitions are uncomplicated and clear; plus, each word has an example of its use, which is incredibly helpful. This also has entries on famous people - my daughter enjoyed just flipping through and seeing which of her historic heroes made the grade. Definitely an excellent resource to have in the house. (My 6th grader insists these books are obsolete, and prefers to use Websters.com... but he also has trouble finding a word alphabetically in a real dictionary. Very sad... I suspect that even with his easy online dictionary, he'll occasionally find good use for this wonderful book.)
