Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich, by Adam Rex

Being a monster isn't all frightening villagers and sucking blood. Monsters have their trials, too. Poor Frankenstein's cupboard is bare, Wolfman is in need of some household help, and it's best not to get started on Dracula’s hygiene issues. What could be scarier?
Nineteen hilarious poems delve into the secret lives of the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bigfoot, Godzilla, and others. In a range of styles that pay homage to everyone from Charles Schulz to John James Audubon, the monstrously talented Adam Rex uncovers horrific--and clever--truths you won't want to miss.

Starred Review. Grade 2-5–This hilarious collection of illustrated poems describes the lives of well-known monsters. Theres Frankenstein, who tries to borrow food from townsfolk, but is instead pelted with garbage: Its true, at first/he thought the worst:/His neighbors were so rude!/But then he found/that on the ground/theyd made a mound of food. The accompanying illustration shows the pickle-green brute happily eyeing a towering sandwich made from discarded edibles. In several comical appearances, the Phantom of the Opera bemoans the fact that he can no longer compose arias because he cant get catchy tunes out of his head (Its a small world after all./Angry cursing fills the hall./Now hes crawling up the wall./Its a small, small world). He eventually considers an alternate career. The Creature from the Black Lagoon ignores his mothers advice, swims too soon after eating, and sinks; Count Dracula walks around with spinach in his teeth because no one dares tell him about it. Told with smooth, unstrained rhymes, each selection captures its subjects voice. Rex uses an impressive variety of techniques and media in the artwork while paying homage to famed illustrators. From shiny black-and-white graphics in Zombie Zombie, to a Richard Scarry-esque interpretation of the Yeti, to pen-and-ink sketches of Dr. Jekyll, each creature claims its own style. The book is fresh, creative, and funny, with just enough gory detail to cause a few gasps. Kids will eat it up.–Lee Bock, Glenbrook Elementary School, Pulaski, WI

It's pronounced Fraaank-unt-steen

Okay. So here was my dilemma. I was supposed to review a children's book of poetry and I had several choices in front of me. I could review the inner city take on "Casey At the Bat". I could do the meaningful one about a Caribbean country. I could do the one about various epitaphs to people of different professions (I am not making this up). Or I could do the goofy monster one. And the ball fell in the goofy monster's court by a loooong shot. You hold "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich" in your hands, and you may not be sure whether or not to trust it. Should I give this to a child? Will they actually enjoy it? Then you read the tiny byline under the title. "And other stories you're sure to like, because they're all about monsters, and some of them are also about food. You like food, don't you? Well, all right then". Any picture book of poetry that says, "Well, all right then", on its cover has won my irony-laden little heart. It's just a nice plus that the poems inside just happen to be funny, beautifully illustrated, and interesting in all sorts of different ways.

Monsters. It's hard not to love `em. Especially classic movie monsters. Now what we have here are all the monsters you could think of put in a variety of humorous and peculiar situations. There's "Count Dracula: Doesn't Know He's Been Walking Around All Night With Spinach In His Teeth". Or howzabout, "The Mummy: Won't Go To His Eternal Rest Without a Story and Some Cookies"? They're all here, illustrated in a vast variety of ways by the ultra-talented Adam Rex. Each poem is a scintillating series of new ideas involving all sorts of critters. Hidden in the pictures as well are limericks from the fictional, "Michelle & VonFuzz Limerical Guide To Monsters". Kids will lap up the goofy pictures and creatures. Adults will find much to love in the overall humor. Altogether, this book's a trip.

Of course, this is not the only children's picture book to recently bring up some classic monsters from the past. "Mommy?", by Maurice Sendak is also a wonderful monsterish tribute to the likes of The Mummy, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, etc. What is to account for this ghoulish trend in children's picture book literature? Haven't a clue. Maybe publishers have eschewed such ideas in the past and are only right now ready for them. That's my theory, anyway.

So will children like this book? I mean, it does do some pretty amusing grown-up jokes that'll soar right over the l'il kiddies' heads. Heck, even the Dedications in this book are funny. They're listed as "Dedications And/Or Weaknesses" and include things like, "For Scott - Light Beer". And then there was the laugh-out-loud poem (part of a running gag), "Now the Phantom of the Opera Can't Get `The Girl From Ipanema' Out of His Head w/a Peppercorn Coulis". But in spite of all of these, you can't get past the fact that the book is really funny AND fun to read. The pictures will suck children in immediately, and the fact that there are elements like the comic strip "Zombie Zombie" feature (which gives us the immortal image of a Zombie Samba) is enough to convince me that children everywhere will love it. Perhaps less so the "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Henderson's Five Alarm Chili", but I've been known to be wrong. Also, some points will have to be detracted from Mr. Rex's score for a tiny mention of Britney Spears. Naughty, Mr. Rex. Naughty. There is no room in this book for that particular monster.

The sheer variety in illustration styles is what really impressed me, though. If you've ever seen an Adam Rex work, be it "The Dirty Cowboy" or "Tree-Ring Circus", then you know how good the guy is. What you may not have been aware of, however, was the massive range the fellow has. Somehow or other, this book has uncorked all of Mr. Rex's hitherto bottled up expressiveness, and the result is everything from realistic oil paintings, pages that could have come from guide books, images that glow with that old-timey silver screen feel, a comic strip, some computer graphic work, and a selection that looks as if it was engraved and created in the late 19th century. THAT is what you will find here.

Finally we come to the obligatory poop joke. Apparently a law was passed about ten years ago that states that no children's movie can have a trailer that does not involve either pooping or farting in some manner. This sometimes carries over to children's picture books (how else to explain the success of "Walter the Farting Dog"?). Actually, this book is fairly poop-free, until the veeeery last poem. Ah, "Godzilla Pooped On My Honda". But, y'know, I can almost forgive it for the picture that accompanies it. It's on the last page and there we see a Japanese woman staring at... well, you know. In the background are Godzilla, Mothra, Ghidorah (your guess is as good as mine), etc. My real objection? Where the heck is Gamera? Like you can do a Japanese monster tribute without that greatest of gigantic turtles. I mean, really.

My knowledge of monster-related poetry books is not what it could be. Still, if you're looking for a title to pair this book with, might I suggest the aforementioned, "Mommy?" or, even better, Judy Sierra's apropos, "Monster Goose". If your little brain is all ah-twitter this Halloween season and you want to buy something for the kiddies that will amuse their parents and children alike, you can't go wrong with "Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich". Just don't start flipping through it if you're under a time constraint. You'll never put it down.

Monsterrific!
By Liz
I simply MUST put in a plug for this fabulous book! As a mom and an illustrator, I was drawn to the amazing art, and I thought perhaps the kids would like it, too. Oh, MAN! It delivered on all points: Amazing art, perfect rhyme (SO hard to find rhyme that really works in a book; it's spot on), and YES- the kids love it and keep going back to read it over and over. I think they do view it as a bit of a fun challenge- there are lots of details and subtleties in the art and text. And I did have to sing "The Girl from Ipanema" to them, because they've never heard it. Overall-YES! Make more books like this, Adam Rex!

Fun, smart poems about monsters!
By Andy J. Smith
Fun, smart poems about monsters for Halloween or anytime! Whether you are an adult or a child, a poetry lover, or just a monster lover you will love this book! Adam Rex's mastery with word and picture are as evident as his love of 50's horror movies! There are many individual poems but the book is well balanced as a whole with several reoccuring characters and similarly themed poems. A fun way to introduce reading to a child, and not at all scary (for better or for worse!)

“Simply great . . . Burns is as good a writer about the South as you’re going to read for a long, long time.” —Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A classic bestseller, Cold Sassy Tree is the story of Will Tweedy, a fourteen-year-old boy coming of age at the turn of the century in rural Georgia. His grandfather, a recent widower, inspires a whirlwind of gossip in their small town when he marries a woman half his age. Brimming with characters who are wise, unimpeachably pious, and deliciously irreverent, it is a resplendent treasure. The unfinished sequel, Leaving Cold Sassy, follows Will Tweedy into adulthood, as he grapples with the influences of the modern world on his cherished southern hometown.

Olive Ann Burns (1924–1990) was born on a farm in Banks County, Georgia. She received a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and for ten years was on the Sunday magazine staff of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She turned to writing as a respite during treatment for cancer. Her first novel, Cold Sassy Tree, made her a best-selling author at age 60.

Boy howdy, I loved it
By Peggy Vincent
Who can fail to love this wonderful novel, full of warmth, humor, and honesty, of life in a small, turn-of-the-century Georgia town. Told by Will Tweedy, a 14yo child whose Grandpa Rucker forms the spine of the novel. The story begins with the death of Grandpa Rucker's wife, a saintly woman beloved by all, and there's a lovely scene of Grandpa asking his grandson to cut all the roses from the garden and help him stick them into burlap sacking to make a blanket of roses under which to bury his wife.
After that touching scene, readers - not to mention family members and townsfolk and church people - are shocked to find Grandpa marrying Miss Love, the town's young and beautiful milliner less than a month later. And it's suspected that Miss Love has A Past.
A beautiful coming-of-age story unfolds as Will becomes the confidante of Miss Love and his grandfather, and he learns life-changing lessons about love, life, death, and the meaning of true reverence, and the smallness of some minds.
Wonderful, memorable characters, wonderful life lessons, wonderful set pieces. And absolutely top-notch dialogue.

Comments from a teenage writer, sort of
By A Customer
... I was required to read this book in school. Being biased against the tedious, coming-of-age novels that always seem to find themselves on my reading list for English class, I immediately labeled Cold Sassy Tree under the "dragging, bland, slow-moving" category. My viewpoints have changed since then. Cold Sassy Tree is a fast-paced, interesting novel about the coming-of-age of a fourteen-year-old boy named Will, who grows up in Cold Sassy, Georgia. A major family conflict sets off the cruel, small-town gossipers of Cold Sassy in the beginning of the book. As the books progresses, several smaller plots take place, which support the theme and thus complicate the story. There are some points in the novel where it seems that Will's family's reputation has gone to the dogs. In the end, however, everything works out and Will learns lessons about life, love, and dignity. For the romantic, Cold Sassy Tree covers the acceptnace of so-called "odd couples." For the religious, Cold Sassy Tree questions theological issues. And for teenage boys also coming of age, Cold Sassy Tree views life from the eyes of a fourteen-year-old (as well as comments on the opposite sex).

A wonderful novel!!!
By Sonja Koehler
I read this book for school over the summer. Now that I've finished, I am so happy it was assigned. This was one of those books that you miss when your done reading.
It takes place in the small town of Cold Sassy, Georgia in the early 1900s. The story is told by a 14 year old boy who has recently lost his best friend and his grandmother. Three weeks after his grandma's death his Grandfather announces that he is going to marry a young woman who is half his age. The family is embarrassed and the town is shocked. After almost a year the town and family starts to accept her the way she accepted them.
I wrote this review as a response to other reviews that I read on the site. Frankly, I was outraged by what some people had to say about this book. Someone claimed that the Grandfather raped his granddaughter and one of the boys friends raped his own sister. I don't know what version he read but that was not at all a part of the story!!! The woman the grandfather married tells that she was raped as a child but that was the only raping that went on in the book, and it was needed to explain why she was so afraid of marring and men. Another person said that a child getting whipped is "HORRIFYING" but that was part of the culture back then. People do not agree with it now but back then it happened all the time. There was also a touch of racism in the plot but again it was needed so that Olive Burns could accurately portray southern life in the early 20th. century.
This book was a joy to read and I cannot wait to get the 2nd. part Leaving Cold Sassy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

My First Day, by Steve Jenkins, Robin Page

The first day of life is different for every animal. Human newborns don’t do much at all, but some animals hit the ground running. The Caldecott Honor–winning team Steve Jenkins and Robin Page apply their considerable talents to revealing how twenty two different species, from the emperor penguin to the Siberian tiger, adapt to that traumatic first few hours of life, with or without parental help. Jenkins’s vividly colorful cut-paper illustrations are eye-poppingly three-dimensional and as exquisite as ever. While the text is short and sweet, an illustrated guide provides descriptions of the twenty two animals in the back. Fantastic!

From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Another winner from this talented creative team. Jenkins's trademark cut-paper collages are up to their usual standard, which is to say they are outstanding, as he captures 23 different newborns on their first day of life. Some of the animals are familiar, such as giraffes and penguins, while others are more exotic, such as a sifaka, a muntjac, and a blue wildebeest. A few simple, clearly written sentences describe the wide variety of things that these youngsters can or cannot do upon entering the world. Children should find the information intriguing as they learn about capybaras that can swim and dive when only a few hours old and how mother zebras memorize the pattern of stripes on their babies so they can recognize them among the thousands of others in the herd. The striking depictions of mother and child set against full-bleed colored backgrounds or clean white space should make for many return readings. Additional information on each animal is included in the back matter. A first purchase for most libraries.-Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist
What happens on the very first day of different animals’ lives? Jenkins and Page depict 23 different animals (including a leatherback turtle, a giraffe, an emperor penguin, a polar bear, and a parent bug), each of whom narrates, in one or two sentences, what it could or could not do on day one. Some spreads contrast animals, such as the kiwi, who is self-sufficient from birth, and the Siberian tiger cub, who can’t even open its eyes. Occasionally a baby animal is given a full double-page spread, as with the wood duck, who jumps out of the nest on one page and paddles after its mother on the next. The vibrant colors of the cut-paper collages give this book a verve that fills the space of the spare narrations. A glossary at book’s end gives more information on each animal, so readers who are amazed, for example, that a mother zebra spends the first hour of her baby’s life memorizing the baby’s unique striped patterns, can find out more. Fun and very educational. Preschool-Grade 2. --Connie Fletcher

A great family read.
By M. Wentworth
This sweet book shares the first day of life from the point of view of the animals included in it. Not just your typical North American animals but animals from around the world, one per page with great pictures similar to Eric Carle style. My kids and I particularly liked the zebra page which shares that the mother zebra memorizes the unique stripe pattern of her particular baby in order to recognize it in the herd! My kids range in age from 8 to 2 and all
love this book. The end of the book has more information on each animal which my 6 and 8 year old really appreciated.

Frankly though adults also enjoyed learning what some animals can do at birth
By karen
I purchased this book for my grandchildren as they were expecting a sibling. I believe it helped them understand just how helpless their baby sister would be at birth and how much they could help teach the new baby. Frankly though adults also enjoyed learning what some animals can do at birth. All Steve Jenkins books are richly illustrated, nonfiction works that while fascinating to children on their own also subtly teach a "science" lesson.

Adorable!
By joyfulgirl68
I bought this for my four and a half year old daughter who loves animals. She begged me for it! It's adorable, with beautiful illustrations. It tells what various animals are able to do on the first day they are born. I would definitely recommend this book and give it as a gift. It's now one of my favorite books! You won't regret buying this book.

Elizabeth Street, by Laurie Fabiano

“Basing her story on her own family narratives and a deep understanding of Italian Americans, [Fabiano] paints a vivid portrait not just of immigrants’ lives in the first ten years of the last century, but of the vicious criminals who preyed on them.”—Mike Dash, author of The First Family

In Elizabeth Street, Laurie Fabiano tells a remarkable, and previously unheard, story of the Italian immigrant experience at the start of the twentieth century. With stories culled from her own family history, Fabiano paints an entrancing portrait of Giovanna Costa, who, reeling from personal tragedies, tries to make a new life in a new world. Shot through with the smells and sights of Scilla, Italy, and New York’s burgeoning Little Italy, this intoxicating story follows Giovanna as she finds companionship, celebrates the birth of a baby girl, takes pride in a growing business, and feels a sense of belonging during a family outing to Coney Island.

However, these modest successes are rewarded with the attention of the notorious Black Hand, a gang of brutal extortionists led by Lupo the Wolf. As the stakes grow higher, Giovanna desperately struggles to remain outside the fray, so she may fight for—and finally save—what is important above all else: family.

Amazon Exclusive: Maria Laurino Reviews Elizabeth Street

Maria Laurino is the author of the memoirs Old World Daughter, New World Mother, a meditation on contemporary feminism, and the national bestseller, Were You Always an Italian?, an exploration of ethnic identity. Laurino's journalism has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times and The Nation, and her essays have been widely anthologized. Read her exclusive guest review of Elizabeth Street:

When readers first meet Giovanna Costa, the protagonist of Elizabeth Street, she is a young woman about to get married in the small Italian fishing village of Scilla, situated between the Calabrian coast and Sicily’s Aeolian Islands. The town is home to the ancient story of Scylla, the once beautiful nymph turned mythical monster that devoured sailors trying to navigate the Straits of Messina. Midway through Laurie Fabiano’s page-turning novel, which is based on her own family history, Giovanna has landed in the New World but finds herself lodged between Scylla and Charybdis. She arrives grief stricken in New York after her beloved husband, Nunzio, has been killed on a badly managed construction site in Brooklyn. Eventually she will settle into an arranged second marriage, but her troubles continue to multiply. Giovanna will be forced to combat the nefarious forces of the Black Hand, the precursor to the Italian-American Mafia, which has threatened to tear apart her new family.

Supporting herself in New York first as a midwife, Giovanna teams up with a woman doctor from northern Italy. The two become close friends and the doctor shares medical knowledge that Giovanna will combine with her holistic midwifery skills. But Giovanna’s fate changes after deciding to open a small fruit and vegetable market with her new husband. The store is an easy source of potential revenue for criminals offering "protection services," and soon Giovanna’s family becomes their prey. With the same mix of disciplined study and the pinch of southern Italian mysticism that she applied to midwifery, Giovanna will take on the ruthless organized crime syndicate that has kidnapped her daughter and murdered the police lieutenant assigned to protect the neighborhood.

Mario Puzo once claimed, years after writing The Godfather, that he had based the infamous character of Don Corleone on his mother. Fabiano has created in Elizabeth Street a southern Italian heroine fighting those criminal forces that have long victimized poor and vulnerable immigrants. In this multigenerational, well-researched tale, the reader also learns interesting details of the common struggles facing southern Europeans coming to America--how, for instance, Ellis Island inspectors were instructed to mark northern and southern Italians as two separate races; and how the wages for common laborers in parts of the country were divided into three categories, the highest salary paid to "whites," the middle scale for "coloreds," and the lowest amount to "Italians."

Elizabeth Street is both a fascinating immigrant story and an intimate portrait of how a first-generation American--and the author’s own great-grandmother--outwits one of the most brutal crime organizations of the early 20th century. --Maria Laurino

From Booklist
First novelist Fabiano is dead-on in her portrait of the Italian-American immigrant experience. This engrossing cross-generational saga centers on the experiences of Giovanna Costa, from the small Italian fishing village where she is born to the bustling streets of New York's Lower East Side where she struggles to raise her family and make a living as a midwife after the death of her first husband. In America, the resourceful Giovanna and her second husband eventually open a fruit and vegetable stand, attracting the unwanted attentions of the notorious “Black Hand” crime organization. When Giovanni refuses to meet their demands, her daughter is kidnapped and held for ransom. Basing this story--including the kidnapping--on her own family's immigrant experiences, Fabiano provides a wealth of period detail, infusing the compulsively readable narrative with an authentic sense of time, place, and community. --Margaret Flanagan

Review
"Elizabeth Street is a great read, a fascinating account of the Italian immigrant experience at the turn of the century that is at once inspiring and terrifying. Before there was The Godfather, there was the Black Hand--and Laurie Fabiano has turned her family's experience into a riveting tale." --Tom Brokaw

"Historians have done what they can to illuminate the world of the earliest American Mafiosi, but there is only so much that the few surviving documents can tell us. Laurie Fabiano takes us much further in Elizabeth Street. Basing her story on her own family narratives and a deep understanding of Italian-Americans, she paints a vivid portrait not just of immigrants' lives in the first years of the last century, but of the vicious criminals who preyed on them. Readers will come away from this book with a deep understanding of the early Mafia, its characters and methods - and some insights that historians can't give them." --Dr. Mike Dash, author of The First Family: Terror, Extortion, Revenge, Murder and the Birth of the American Mafia

The best book I've read in a long time!
By Catherine
Now that I have finished reading Elizabeth Street, I miss the characters and wish to be in their lives again. That is because the author depicted the characters in such a vivid and clear way, that I became emotionally involved with them. I don't know if the novel is historical fiction, a detective story, or a story about the human condition - all of the above, actually. While immersed in this novel, I felt the wonderful warmth of an Italian family; the strength and courage of a mother and other characters; and the suspense of a kidnapping. I could see, in my mind, New York City in the early 1900's. The author obviously did extensive and impeccable research. Her greatest strength, though, is her ability to tell a beautifully written and fascinating story. I do wish there were more novels like this one!

Grabs you quickly and doesn't let go
By Joseph Daniels
Elizabeth Street is the rare book that combines a rich historical setting and focus with a brilliantly faced-paced narrative. It is a page turner that manages to bring the reader back and forth from the streets of new york to villages and hamlets in Italy. I was sceptical since this is not my normal genre but its a great read and I ended up very much appreciating an unknown and richly fascinating part of the American Experience.

Soulful, Suspenseful, Sicilian, Superb
By L. Folger
This is a wonderful first novel by Laurie Fabiano. I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a family story built on recollections, secrets and untold stories, steeped in the history of both southern Italy and NYC at the turn of the century. It is a heartfelt, suspenseful story of which reveals so much about the life and times of the Italian immigrants who came to this country. You fall in love, you are terrorized, you are angered...just as the main character, Laurie's great grandmother, Giovanna was - and you are amazed by her strength and determination.
I used to live in NYC - a stones throw from Mulberry St. "Elizabeth Street" is like a time machine, bringing to life Little Italy in a time I never knew but now can well imagine.
I wish I had been able to read this when I lived there ! Bravo.

Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry, and Baseball's Greatest Gift, by Harvey Araton

“How would you like to hang out with Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry during spring training? Funny and sweet, Driving Mr. Yogi transports you there.” — Jim Bouton, author of Ball Four

It happens every spring. Yankees pitching great Ron Guidry arrives at the Tampa airport to pick up Hall of Fame catcher and national treasure Yogi Berra. Guidry drives him to the ballpark. They watch the young players. They talk shop. They eat dinner together and tease each other mercilessly. They trade stories about the greats they have met along the way. And the next day they do the same thing all over again.

As every former ballplayer can appreciate, in that routine, every spring, there emerges a certain magic.

Driving Mr. Yogi is the story of how a unique friendship between a pitcher and catcher is renewed every year. It began in 1999, when Berra was reunited with the Yankees after a long self-exile, the result of being unceremoniously fired by George Steinbrenner fourteen years before. A reconciliation between Berra and the Boss meant that Berra would attend spring training again. Guidry befriended "Mr. Yogi" instantly. After all, Berra had been a mentor in the clubhouse back when Guidry was pitching for the Yankees. Guidry knew the young players would benefit greatly from Mr. Yogi's encyclopedic knowledge of the game, just as Guidry had during his playing days. So he encouraged him to share his insights. Soon, an offhand batting tip from Mr. Yogi turned Nick Swisher's season around. Stories about handling a hitter like Ted Williams or catching Don Larsen's perfect game captured their imaginations. And in Yogi, Guidry found not just an elder companion or source of amusement – he found a best friend.
At turns tender, at turns laugh-out-loud funny, and teeming with unforgettable baseball yarns that span more than fifty years, Driving Mr. Yogi is a universal story about the importance of wisdom being passed from one generation to the next, as well as a reminder that time is what we make of it and compassion never gets old.

Amazon.com Review
Harvey Araton on Driving Mr. Yogi

There have been many books written about and by Yogi Berra. What makes this one different?
The previous books about Berra, or those authored by him, have focused almost solely on his storied career, or on the quirkiness of his personality, his famous "Yogi-isms." This book captures him as never before and in doing so characterizes him as far more multidimensional. In this flung-open window into Berra's octogenarian life, and his incredibly heartwarming relationship with Ron Guidry, he occasionally is stubborn, cranky, vulnerable and ultimately endearing--in the manner of most aging folks we know. This is as real as Yogi Berra gets.

How did the book come about?
First, our beloved 14-year-old black Labrador died. Then our friends, the Kaplans, took us out for dinner. Dave Kaplan is the longtime director of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center. I mentioned that I was going down to spring training the following week and wondered if and when Yogi would be there. Knowing that he had recently had some health issues, I asked if Yogi's wife Carmen always stays with him in Tampa. Dave said, "Actually, Carmen usually only goes down for a few days. Believe it or not, Ron Guidry looks after Yogi. He’s been doing it for years." Later that night, a light went on in my head. Might be a story there, I thought. It wound up on page one of the New York Times and the response to it was overwhelming. Fifteen hundred words hardly did it justice. Hence, we now have 70,000.

How did you arrive at the title Driving Mr. Yogi?
Just to be playful, Joni Bronander, who works for the Berras at their museum, made a cap for Guidry with the inscription "Driving Mr. Yogi," playing off the Driving Miss Daisy film. She also had one made for Yogi that says: "Driven by Gator." The title seemed like a natural fit from the beginning, although as I worked through the story I began to realize that "Driving Mr. Yogi" was something of a double entendre. It developed a far deeper meaning than I originally realized.

How so?
As much as this is about generational loyalty and commitment, about honoring everything that has come before, it is also an examination of a man who refuses to surrender to human frailty. And while Yogi Berra may be a household name of historic proportion, he is also really an Everyman, much like our grandfathers and grandmothers and parents, who clings to his identity however he can because it makes him feel not only happy, but vital and alive. Like Guidry, we all have such people in our lives--be it by blood relation or otherwise--who deserve our love and assistance in their struggle to not be pushed into a geriatric corner and left there.

Why is Yogi Berra so beloved?
I think there are obvious reasons--great team ballplayer, ten-time World Series champion, humble yet confident, not physically imposing, approachable, and a grown man nicknamed Yogi. At the same time, Berra has been a celebrity for many decades now, used to having people wait on him--or wanting something from him--and in that regard he can occasionally be demanding, though not in the sense that he wants material things given to him. But he does expect to be driven to the ballpark on a certain day, at a very specific time, and so on. As I came to understand it, those who cater to Berra see him as the most unpretentious famous person in the history of celebrity. They revel in being inside his circle because they plainly see that status has nothing to do with it. It’s not about how important you are; it’s about how real a friend you are. A baseball book about its community... and, of course, about Yogi Berra
By Esther Schindler
A lot of baseball books (and gosh, it seems like I've read a lot of them lately) put a lot of attention on the game itself: balls and strikes, who won, and the mindset that helps a champion (individual or team) deliver a lasting result. The better books are about the people behind the game: the hardships they endure to reach the major leagues (such as Bottom of the 33rd: Hope, Redemption, and Baseball's Longest Game), or the conversations that happen on the field (such as Just Play Ball by Joe Garagiola). Araton's "Driving Mr. Yogi: Yogi Berra, Ron Guidry, and Baseball's Greatest Gift" falls into this category.

Driving Mr Yogi isn't exactly a biography, but in many ways it reads like one. The framework for the Harvey Araton's reporting is a long-standing tradition wherein longtime Yankee pitcher Ron Guidry picks up Yogi Berra at the airport before spring training, and essentially is his companion during those weeks in Florida. In the process of sharing the story about how _that_ friendship came to be, Araton gives us vignettes into the lives of many well-known baseball personalities and does some sincerely entertaining tale-swapping. (One of them: Berra talking about a game against the White Sox in which the first four batters reached base on four pitches -- single, hit by pitch, double, and home run. "On his way to the mound, manager Casey Stengel met Berra halfway and asked how [the pitcher's] stuff looked. 'How the hell would I know?' Berra said. 'I haven't caught one yet.'") I'm not sure we can feel we are sitting in the locker room listening to Yogi, but at least we can pretend we are.

Yogi Berra is a sterling choice as emblem of baseball because he has, after all, been through so much of it. (As a rookie, he crossed paths with Babe Ruth. He played against Jackie Robinson.) You probably expect the book to be peppered with Yogi-isms, both old ("In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they're not") and new... and indeed there are a _few_ of these. (My favorite: Yogi's at a Yankees Old-Timer's day, saddened by the loss of old teammates. Turning to Whitey Ford, "while the list of that year's deceased scrolled down the scoreboard, Berra had confided, 'Boy, I hope I never see my name up there.'")

Mainly, though, it's about Yogi's life, as measured by the lives he has touched. The book talks about the time that Yogi spent with Jorge Posada, "to take on the job of making Posada *want* to catch, of making him believe he could contribute behind the plate as much as he could while standing alongside it with a bat in his hands," such as calling fewer fastballs. We find out about the 14-year period during which Yogi refused to go to Yankee stadium (which I missed, as it was before the time I cared about baseball). We get quite a bit of insight into Guidrey, too, and snippets of others' background. Just about everybody comes across as a Nice Guy.

But primarily this is how Yogi _is_, and what he means to the Yankees and to baseball. It's sweet and entertaining... though a little goes a long way. I read this book in spurts (actually I have a chapter or two left) because, however WayCool Berra is, at times the admiration is just a little too deep. It feels as though I'm reading a very long eulogy, and I refuse to acknowledge that Yogi Berra can leave us.

If the book seems a little heavy-handed towards the Yankees... Well, who can blame it? But as a fervent Diamondbacks fan, I can tell you it's just as enjoyable a book if you wear Sedona Red rather than pinstripes. I liked the book, and I think you will, too.

Outstanding

I don't care if you are a baseball fan, a Yankee fan or neither....if you like books about human beings, that's all you need to love this book. Great storytelling - funny, warm, touching, insightful. Two great Yankee icons sharing time together and you're right there. Two human beings from different generations sharing time together - and you're right there. Classy.

It ain't over ...
By WryGuy2
"Driving Mr. Yogi", by Harvey Araton, tells of the friendship that developed between former Yankees greats Yogi Berra and Ron Guidry. Guidry first met Berra while Guidry was a player for the Yankees and Berra was a coach. While Berra helped Guidry as a player at that time, it wasn't until much later, after they had both retired, that the friendship began. Both former players were coming to Florida as Spring Training instructors when Guidry volunteered to pick Berra up at the airport. Little did he realize that taking care of Berra during the spring would become an annual labor of love.

The relationship between Guidry and Berra is written primarily through Guidry's eyes. Although there are also anecdotes in both men's lives that don't involve the other, such as when George Steinbrenner apologized to Berra for the way he fired him, ending 15 years of estrangement between the two, the meat of the book revolves around Guidry and the aging Berra. Yogi comes off as a gentle curmudgeon, fixed in his ways and somewhat demanding of his friends, although a good man with a gentle heart. In my opinion, Guidry is actually the "star" of the book, looking out for Berra and asking nothing in return but Yogi's friendship.

The book is well written, and a quick, easy read. While baseball is the common denominator between the two and the backdrop of the story, the rapport between the two men is the real heart of the book. Five stars.
