Jung, Myth and Ursula LeGuin

Ursula Le Guin is the daughter of Alfred Kroeber, an anthropologist, and Theodora Kroeber, a psychologist and writer. It's easy and accurate to say that her parents' interests inform her brilliant writing, and that cultural anthrpology and Jungian psychology are at the core of Wizard of Earthsea and its three sequels.
But the book isn't a treatise. It's a wonderful, well-told story of a young man, Ged, coming of age in a world where words can have the power of magic and dragons are as real as earthquakes. There is nothing didactic about this story; Le Guin's writing is compelling and her characters are vivid: Ogion, the Mage of Silence, whose word had stilled an earthquake; Vetch, who helps Ged on a deadly quest for no reason but friendship; Murre, Vetch's sister; Yevaud, the dragon of Pendor; and Skiorh, possessed by a gebbeth.
Earthsea doesn't exist in a vacuum. Le Guin constructs a deep and textured history, and her characters act in ways that are consistent with that world. She manages the trick of writing a mythic tale without falling into the traps and foibles of sounding like you are trying.
The climax is straight from Carl Jung, but you don't need to know Carl Jung from Steve Young to appreciate it.
From time to time, religious groups call for this book to be banned from school libraries, claiming it promotes witchcraft. Nonsense. This is a book every teenager should read. It speaks to self-understanding, nothing more.
And some feminists criticize Le Guin because Ged is a male character. Again, nonsense, Ged is an archetype, and his gender matters not at all.
This is an important book. It's also terrific fun. Highly recommended.

The original school of magic.

I'm writing this review because JK Rowling's books about the Hogwarts School of Magic reminded me of this, one of the few perfect novels I've ever read.
It's not a light-hearted fairy tale, though it is "high fantasy." It's the story of Ged, from his childhood discovery of his wonderful yet terrible magical powers; to his education at the School of Wizardry on Roke Knoll. There he makes a misstep; overstepping his powers, he accidentally lets loose an evil creature from a shadow world. His self-imposed exile, journeys, and eventual maturation and triumph are written with a deft flair for the beauty and wonder of magic; yet Ms. LeGuin is even more masterful in depicting Ged's character: the young high achiever who must finally make his peace with his inner demons.
As a child, I loved it for the idea of a school of magic. I grew older, reread it during a dark teenage time, and cried when Ged finally confronted his inner shadow creature. Later, studying anatomy in medical school, I recalled Ged's long days in the Namer's high tower, learning the true names of things; and bent cheerfully to my task.
It still bears re-reading to this day. Readers who enjoy Tolkien, JK Rowling, or Alice Miller's "Drama of the Gifted Child" ought particularly to read it; and readers who didn't like "The Left Hand of Darkness" or "The Dispossessed" should give Ms. LeGuin another try, in this, her finest work. . It is one of my favorite novels and I recommend it to you wholeheartedly.

Jungian psychology at its best...

Not only is the "Earthsea" trilogy a wonderful series for adolescents but it also contains profound wisdom for adults seeking their own path to individuation. Rich in timeless myth, the series has the young mage Ged surmount many trials on his way to understanding himself and therein lies the key to his ultimately becomming the Archmage of Roke. Each book in the series has the main story turn on the issue of trust between two people and upon Ged's courage in facing dark issues either within himself or in the enviroment. Ged is a powerful role for young people developing a sense of their inner integrity and for middle-agers every where beginning to deal with their shadow issues. Of course there are plenty of dragons, battles, transformations and journeys which can be enjoyed simply as a good storey, but don't pass up the chance to re-read to catch the deeper meaning. This series is too good to be eclipsed in popularity by LOTR and the Chornicles of Narnia, "Earthsea" stands on its own! If I haven't convinced you, please read the essay by Noel Perrin in his book, "A Child's Delight."

It's not hard to add page turning signals yourself

I agree with reviewer "Toys 4 Life" that publishers should offer more quality read-along books with audio CDs. I got my 4-year old this Curious George Complete Adventures Deluxe Book and CD Gift Set first and he loved it so much that I started to look for something similar. I'm not a huge Disney/Pixar (etc.) book fan, so this was the only collection that caught my attention.
We were not disappointed. The story about Curious George seems a bit dull compared with the ones in the other set, but all in all my son really enjoys the stories. The poems didn't interest him much at the beginning, but because they're only short "stops" between two stories, he has been listening and is starting to like them, too.
As for page turning signals - they really would have been a must! I don't agree that you have to sit down with your child always and listen to the CD together. When I sit down with him, I read to him myself. This CD is for the times I'm upstairs putting his little brother to bed, for instance.
So I spent a night inserting the page turning signals myself. It's not that hard. Convert the tracks into mp3s ("Audiograbber" is freeware), then open up an audio editing program (I used the freeware "Audacity"). Choose an audio file for a page turning signal, open it, mark it and press copy. Next, open the mp3s and paste your signal in the right places. Awesome story & poem collection plus audio CD!

Excellent gift for kids up to age 7. I first saw this at a retail store and was kicking myself for not buying it because I could not find it anywhere when I decided to get it later. Didn't help that the title is rather nondescript and easy to forget. There are 8 stories and 8 poems from various authors. The selections are read by various male and female readers. It's easy to forward to a particular story/poem by using your CD player's advance button. My 6 year old loves it and even my 9 year old listens in when it's on. Kids who want a bedtime story from exhausted parents can just listen or follow along in the book until they fall asleep. The only thing lacking from this CD is that kids who are not yet readers do not have a bell to know when to turn the page. Publishers need to offer more storybook collections with audio CD like this one!

Together in one entire book are many reader's childhood favorite books from Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed to Martha Speaks. The Family Storybook Treasury has numerous books that will leave you feeling nostalgic and looking for a child to pass them along to. Enjoy an afternoon of reading with your favorite child as you turn the pages of this fantastic compilation.

Coming from someone who's shelves are usually packed to the brim the Family Storybook Treasury was an easy book to add to our collection. Who can resist not only one picture book, but half a dozen put together into one very delightful compilation? I certainly couldn't and my son and daughter have both enjoyed reading this one. We do have a couple of favorites: Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, Martha Speaks and Tacky the Penguin are our top three and the ones that get read over and over again. As a parent, though the size of the book is a daunting 300 pages, this is still a marvelous addition to our home library if for no other reason than the versatility it provides within one bound book. Not to mention the fact that it's packed with magnificent authors and illustrators.

Family Storybook Treasury: Tales of Laughter, Curiosity, and Fun has been a delightful addition to our home library and one that I'm positive will be read again and again as it's passed down from child to grandchild in the years to come. There's no doubt there will be a favorite amidst the over half a dozen full picture books included within it's pages, but regardless there will be numerous stories to be enjoyed by one and all. This has been a wonderful reading experience to have with both of my kiddos because not only are the authors and illustrators wonderful, but the versatility allows for hours of reading without losing the attention of those young readers. Definitely a picture book collection that should be added to everyone's home library.

Excellent Math Text

I bought this text for my daughter who homeschools and is in 7th grade. I know it will be a little challenging but she would like to take Algebra as an 8th grader. I have looked at many companies and haven't found a single one that does such a great job of setting the lessons up and putting everything into units. At the beginning of a lesson, there are 3-5 examples of the new information. Then there are 7-15 guided practice problems (we do these together). Then what I think is genius, the remaining 20-40 problems apply what concept was taught to many aspects of everyday life (charts, graphs, word problems, etc.). This helps real-world application take place which for me, as a kid, never happened with texts like Saxon. After the main lesson, there are 5-15 review problems of previous concepts so the skills aren't lost. Then if desired, the student can do the standardized problems if they are preparing for the state tests. Mixed throughout the units are mid-ch quizes and a test after each chapter. They are also mini lessons you can do that explain how to use a graphing calculator and other concepts. I am so glad I found such a great company and text for my daughter. We also looked at the Course 2 and 3 texts by Holt McDougal and they have the same setup. The only thing was then my daughter wouldn't be able to take Algebra in 8th grade. The Course 2 is for 7th graders and is a good text if your child is average (not lower or excellent). The course 3 is for 8th graders who will take Pre-Algebra as a 9th grader. The same concepts as in both the Course 3 and Pre-Algebra books with the exception of a little more trig and geometry in the end of the Pre-Algebra book. If we don't get to the end of the book this year, that won't be a big deal because rarely do regular school finish a text in 1 year. She will always cover geometry and trig later.

Great material but publishers shortchange the Common Core program

Identical to all Student Practice Books for CC Math and consequently it shares all of the good and the bad of them all. The good is that the book carefully follows the math program and provides a ready source of additional practice problems for the student to use in the classroom or at home. The bad, and this is a real problem, is that the book does not include a comprehensive answer key, including sample solution models where appropriate, to allow the parent or tutor to quickly score the practice sheets and provide feedback to the student. There seems to be some sort of bias in the publishers of CC material against providing answers and examples related to practice materials and test to any but teachers who have paid full licensing fees. This is a great disservice to the program which relies heavily upon parent support of students for its success. While some parents may be able, and have the time to work out answers to all of the practice problems, many do not or won't and only the students and the CC program will suffer.

Brought my students grade up

I bought this book to go with "Go math student edition 4th grade" and "Go Math reteach book". My student is doing great went from N to B in one term. The 2 go math 4th grade books are what my student uses in class and the reteach is a break down of what these books are asking for. Perfect Combinations. Highly recommend all of them.

Great price! Life saver

I would definitely recommend this to other parents. I purchased it because my daughter brings home a book bag that is just too heavy for a child to carry. So, we leave this extra copy at home & that way she does not have to carry it to and from school.
