Adventures of a Cat-Whiskered Girl, by Daniel Pinkwater

Big Audrey is a girl . . .
with cat’s whiskers . . .
and sort of cat’s eyes.
But, is there an other cat-whiskered, sort of cat-eyed girl?

Big Audrey waves goodbye to her friends Iggy and Neddie, Seamus, and Crazy Wig, in Los Angeles and hitches a ride with bongo-playing-while-driving Marlon Brando across the country to Poughkeepsie, New York, city of mystery. She finds she has questions needing answers—and a bit of inter-plane-of-existence traveling to do.

Big Audrey and her telepathic friend Molly zigzag off on an incredibly strange and kooky adventure, and solve the mystery of the cat-whiskered doppelganger.

From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6–Big Audrey, the cat-whiskered girl who returned with Iggy, Neddie, and Seamus to their plane of existence at the end of The Yggyssey (Houghton Harcourt, 2009), takes center stage in this adventure. Wanting to see more of this plane, she sets off on a road trip across the country and ends up in Poughkeepsie, NY. Audrey mingles with the locals–a quirky cast of characters that includes a wise woman who shows her a picture of a 19th-century girl who looks exactly like her, cat-whiskers and all. Audrey is the only one convinced that she and the girl are not the same person, and solving this mystery takes her and her new friend, Molly, on another inter-dimensional adventure. Pinkwater once again exercises his trademark irreverent humor complete with puns and literary allusions. Short chapters adorned with spot art keep the story moving, and the fact that Audrey and Molly are rarely–if ever–fazed by anything that happens allows readers to breeze through this lighthearted tale that never takes itself too seriously. It is not necessary to have read the earlier titles as Audrey is the only character who makes a repeat performance. As with the first two books, the narrative rushes to a conclusion and ends somewhat abruptly with promises of future adventures. Nevertheless, it is sure to be enjoyed by fans of Pinkwater's unique talent.Amanda Raklovits, Champaign Public Library, IL

From Booklist
This spin-off of The Yggyssey (2009) features Big Audrey, a 14-year-old girl who, as the titles suggests, uncannily resembles a cat. This is only the start of Audrey's peculiarities, and although she is from another dimensional plane, she resides in Poughkeepsie with a couple who owns a UFO bookstore. She befriends a nutty professor and a young girl who is really a dwerg (a race of magical mountain people) from the local psych hospital. Together, they travel throughout Poughkeepsie and various dimensions trying to uncover Audrey's true identity. Every character they encounter is crazier than the next—a 114-year-old woman named Chicken Nancy; a Catskill Mountain Giant; members of a secret brotherhood from an alternate Poughkeepsie—and every chance encounter leads them to another zany adventure. Mixing the absurd with the profound, Pinkwater's odd narration will have even the most serious readers laughing at the chaos. As Audrey notes, “Very often when crazy people are not actively being crazy, they are less crazy than regular people who are a little bit crazy at all times.” Grades 5-8. --Kimberly Garnick

Review

"Well stocked with the usual oddball characters and fabulous throwaway lines ("Doughnuts are not unknown where I come from, but they are not used as food"), the book sails along in an airy and vastly entertaining way to an appropriately daffy resolution. Pinkwater is definitely on a roll—or in this case a fritter."--Kirkus

"Pinkwater meanders all over the place in his storytelling, weaving together nonsense and humor with bits of actual history and science. The story is fast-paced and laugh-out-loud funny, and though the ending, if it can be called that, doesn't let up on the weirdness, readers will find reasons to delight on every page."--Publishers Weekly

Fun fun fun!
By Natasha Stryker
If you are a Pinkwater fan you know what fun lay in store for you, if you have never read a Pinkwater book -- you are in for a treat! This is a really wacky, funny and crazy adventure to hand your kids to get them interested in reading. There is no lame story of a girl sapping for some guy or anything like that either which is really appreciated in the era of "twilight" style books. This would be a great book to read WITH your kid since I think most parents would enjoy it; fun and friskey, it will not disappoint.

I will happily give my kids Pinkwater books when they get old enough, my hubby and I already have most of them; we were jazzed to add this one to the collection.

A full dose of Pinkwater nuttiness and enough throwaway lines to last a decade
By Jessica Weissman
Oh, how I love Daniel Pinkwater. All of his books have his signature nuttiness and all are stuffed with throwaway lines that are the envy of any humorous kids' author. There are enough original ideas here for a half dozen books. And there'a female narrator/protagonist.

Sure, some of his earlier books had more coherent plots and more emotion and longing built in. This is the sequel to the Yggessey, which is the sequel to the Neddiad. Since Homer wrote only two books (Iliad and Odyssey) I guess Pinkwater felt he was totally freed up for the third one in the series. Even without much of a plot (though there is a successful quest and the heroine - who is NOT a pussycat as she loudly and frequently maintains-gets transformed by the end). Any faint connection with realism in the earlier books is gone. But so what? Pinkwater is so funny, and his fizzing brain is so full of good stuff he's willing to share with us that it just doesn't matter.

If you want all this plus conventional-ish plotting, try Lizard Music or The Snarkout Boys. But if you've read those and the others and just want more Pinkwater fun (including a brief opera parody), go ahead and read this one. And enjoy.

Like Daniel Pinkwater's other books, ADVENTURES OF A CAT-WHISKERED GIRL practically defies description.
By KidsReads
In his most recent books, THE NEDDIAD and THE YGGYSSEY, Daniel Pinkwater has reinvented the road trip/quest novel, starring some pretty unlikely protagonists and featuring some truly outlandish situations. Now, in ADVENTURES OF A CAT-WHISKERED GIRL, Pinkwater broadens his world, moving from 1950s-era Los Angeles to Poughkeepsie, New York, where a girl from another plane of existence encounters some pretty wacky characters --- including, possibly, another version of herself.

That girl is Big Audrey, who used to live with her uncle, has no recollection of her parents, and entered our plane of existence thanks to the help of Iggie, Neddie, Seamus and Crazy Wig. She spends some time in Los Angeles, where she is introduced to such wonders as doughnuts ("Doughnuts are not unknown where I come from, but they are not used as food."). But, after a time, she longs for a change of scene and wanders far afield to Poughkeepsie, New York, where she easily finds a job at a bookshop specializing in extraterrestrials, because the proprietors are convinced she herself is an alien. Big Audrey is pretty sure she's not, but she is kind of odd-looking, with those cat whiskers and all.

Besides her employers, the Gleybners, Big Audrey meets some other unusual denizens of Poughkeepsie. There's Professor Tag of Vassar, who's a little...unstable: "Once a year, Professor Tag would go nuts and they would move him up to the loony bin for a while --- then he'd get over being nuts and they'd bring him back to teach his classes." At the insane asylum, Big Audrey also meets Molly, a girl with an unusual heritage, and the two of them encounter Chicken Nancy, an old wise woman who tells them tales of the horrific Wolluf and of the menacing Muffin Man, also known as "Matthias Krenzer, the old Dutch censor, who stole the censer, and became an old Dutch cleanser, who later opened a small muffinery." Chicken Nancy also shows Big Audrey a peculiar picture --- of a girl named Elizabeth Van Vreemdeling, who looks exactly like Big Audrey, cat whiskers and all.

On a quest to uncover the strange occurrences after dark in Poughkeepsie, Big Audrey and Molly encounter Wild Things, bizarre boats, the world's tiniest giant, and even the horrific Wolluf --- who's not so scary after all, at least not to Audrey. But Big Audrey's journey --- and especially new information about the mysterious Elizabeth --- prompts her to want more answers about where she came from and where, in the end, she might be going.

Like Daniel Pinkwater's other books, ADVENTURES OF A CAT-WHISKERED GIRL practically defies description. His unusual sense of humor, his incredible talent for creating bizarre characters and preposterous predicaments, and his ability to orchestrate all this zaniness and hilarity while still developing credible characters who elicit readers' sympathy and silliness in equal measure are reasons enough for potential readers to set aside any doubts and just dive right in to Pinkwater's world. His latest novel ends with a cliffhanger, too, as Audrey and Molly set off on the next chapter of their ever more ridiculous, hilarious and surprisingly sweet adventure.
