common core crap

If you are looking for a common core aligned math text, this is the book for you. The publishers did a good job at making it easy for teachers to cover all of the stuff that the government wants students to know. If you are like me, a veteran teacher of 15 years who sees the absurdity in teaching kids complicated concepts before they have the basics down, then this book is not for you. My daughter is using Go Math in her fourth grade class, and she's doing fine. However, she's naturally bright, I had her in KUMON for 4 years, and I drill her in computation at home. I am tutoring her classmate who is thoroughly confused because she is taught 5 convoluted alternatives before she gets to the tried-and-true standard algorithm for solving a math problem. I manage to help the poor girl by showing her the standard form first. Also, Why are they so obsessed with place value and estimation? Why can't kids just learn to do basic math first?
I would give the book fewer stars, but I know there are a lot of administrators out there who know that they have to adhere to Common Core Crap Standards for the state tests.

Don't buy without teacher's edition!

This is a great book, but it's worthless without the teacher's edition unless you've taught using "Go Math" curriculum! It's not designed to use without a teacher's edition which is unfortunate for homeschoolers! I like that this book encourages higher level thinking and showing your work, but some of the problems leave me wondering what the author of the text is looking for. It's possible that lower grades are more self explanatory. However, if you're a 4th grade homeschool parent, I don't recommend it since most teacher's editions are pricey!

Common Core Ready

This product is aligned to the core without any adjustment. It uses a spiral approach to math, and is simple enough to be taught without the teacher's edition.
