Just Grace is Just OK (from an avid 7-1/2 year old reader)

"Although I haven't read the Amber Brown, Clementine and Judy Moody series (listed on the cover) I was thinking it would be like Junie B. Jones. It wasn't. That was really was a surprise! Junie B. Jones is a lot funnier. I like Junie B Jones and the Boxcar Children series more. I think this book was OK."
To put this review into perspective, Verena is in the 2nd grade and reads voraciously. She must go through 25-30 books each week. (These are books at the 3rd-4th grade reading level so they're not that big) She can go through Junie B. Jones, Rainbow Magic or Magic Tree House books in one sitting, often finishing several in a day (if we let her - NO BOOKS AT THE DINNER TABLE!)
Just Grace? It took her over 4 months to finish this book. From what I can tell, despite the cartoons and drawings, it simply didn't hold her interest. I had to remind her of it numerous times to get her to finish it. At 169 pages (including all the drawings, etc) it's not a very long book.
Other series she enjoyed were: Captain Underpants, A-Z mysteries, Cam Jansen.

Wonderful for young girls

Just Grace is back in JUST GRACE AND THE TERRIBLE TUTU and I hope she never goes away. Charise Mericle Harper knows young girls and it shows beautifully. Mimi, Grace's best friend is going to be getting a sister. Lily, a 4 year-old moves in next door and immediately takes to Grace but is shy around Mimi. Grace comes up with a plan to get Lily to like Mimi. Grace is a strong personality and I would have liked her as my friend growing up. This is a wonderful read for young girls and it will be made part of my library collection.

Fabulous book - my daughter devoured it

My 9 year old daughter was thrilled when this book arrived (and so quickly here in Australia) and promptly took herself off to her room and started reading. I adore this series - nothing untoward or worrying - just good fun. It is very hard these days to find books that are appropriate for girls that don't embrace behaviour and themes that are not appropriate or desirable - the Just Grace series are perfect and I am more than happy in knowledge that she is reading something that enjoys without any "minefields". I highly recommend them.
