Excellent set to continue the Saxon course 1,2,3 curriculum

I am so glad to have found this homeschool kit for the Saxon Algebra I course. We started homeschooling a few years ago and after looking at many different math curricula (Saxon for homeschoolers, Singapore math, etc) I settled on the Saxon Course 1, 2 and 3 as the best, most user friendly of all the Middle School Math curriculum out there. Saxon Math, Course 1Saxon Math, Course 2 (Student Edition)Saxon Math Course 3 (2007 Student edition)Homeschoolers differ in what they are looking for but I liked the way each lesson reviewed previous material, built on previously taught concepts and flowed smoothly into the next topic. Algebra I continues where course 3 leaves off and uses the format that I find to be excellent.
The set consists of a 938 page hardcover textbook, a softcover Solutions Manual and a softcover Homeschooling Testing book.
The Textbook : Following the pattern of the course 1, 2 and 3 books, this text is divided into 12 sections, each with 10 lessons within it. The first two sections cover the basic knowledge required for working with Equations (distributive property, properties of real numbers, calculating and comparing square roots, etc.). Starting with lesson 21 the text begins to work with single step and multistep equations, equations with variables on both sides and enters Graphing Functions. It isn't until lesson 41 that you enter calculations of slope, graphing linear functions and writing Equations in slope-Intercept form. My reason for listing all of this is that I know a child who is in Algebra I and felt totally overwhelmed within weeks since the teacher never spent the time to make sure that the base was solid before plunging into graphing linear functions, calculating slope, etc. I think Algebra I has the potential to be intimidating if the text, and teacher, do not ensure that the base in mathematics is truly solid.
Layout of the Lessons : Each lesson begins with a Warm Up where the child gets to practice concepts previously taught. Then a New Concept is introduced by showing examples using a variety of methods and real world applications. In some lessons an Explorations section allows the child to go more in depth by investigating the concept using manipulatives, etc. (Later on in the text this is accompanied by labs using Graphing calculators). This is followed by a short section for Lesson practice which lets the teacher/student pick up on whether the concept has been clearly understood or not. After that comes the final section - Practice! What I love about the practice section is that it reviews not only the concept just taught, but also math learned in previous lessons. This allows for regular practice of concepts that may otherwise be quickly forgotten and also lets the child see the connection between earlier concepts and new ones just being learned. The practice section usually has 30 practice problems that vary from very simple reinforcers of concepts to some really tangled problem solving.
Solution Manual: With course 1,2 and 3 I invested in the teachers manuals which came out to a pretty penny. I found that the teachers manuals were redundant when homeschooling since the text has excellent explanations and the teachers manual really helps in pinpointing issues when working with a large group of kids. Also, the teachers manual points out which concepts are being missed if certain problems are done wrong by the child.
Anyway, I think the solutions manual that comes with this set is really more than enough since it does not simply give you the answer but shows you the steps for working through the problem. The Homeschool testing book included in this kit lets you know exactly which concept needs revisiting based on errors made on the tests.
Homeschool Testing book : This softcover contains Tests, a testing schedule, Test Answer Forms, a Test Analysis Form and Test Solutions.
Tests are available every 5 lessons, beginning after lesson 10. Basically, you are meant to give the test five lessons after a concept has been introduced so that the child has had 5 lessons to practice and perfect his knowledge of material. E.G Test 2 covers material through lesson 10 and is given after teaching lesson 15. The pages are perforated so you can remove the tests to use as you go along.
The Answer forms for the tests are available in three formats : A double sided master with a grid background and partitions for 20 questions, A double sided master on a plain background and a single sided master with space for solutions and a separate area to enter answers. You do need to make copies of these forms to use them. There is only one copy of each format included in the book.
Test Analysis Form : The most useful part of the testing book this allows you to connect what answers the child got wrong to what topics were being tested by that question. It allows you to decide if you need to revisit a concept in earlier chapters that the child might be weak in.
In sum, this is an excellent set to use if for teaching a child Algebra I. The smooth grade of increasing complexity never makes the concepts seem too difficult and the texts are set up to allow you to catch problems before they result in frustration. I plan on buying the Geometry and Algebra II texts that follow this book as well!

Came as pictured

I was nervous ordering this from Amazon instead of Saxon, but I'm glad I did. Better price, and the full set came as pictured (text book, solutions manual, and test booklet). All in perfect, brand-new condition.
As for the textbook, I think it's fantastic. Different learners need different methods, of course, but this one suits my 8th grader perfectly. The instruction is clear, and there is enough help and structure to make it very easy to teach algebra at home.

Use the older edition

I am a homeschooling mother of five and I have used Saxon for math all the way through with all my students from the beginning until now. I have always loved Saxon's methodology and rigor. However, after finishing this text with my oldest student, I have decided not to use it with the others. It is rife with errors. There are errors in the explanations of the New Concepts sections, errors in the way questions are written, errors in the Solutions Manual, errors on test questions and errors in the answer key for the tests. I have never seen a Saxon book of such low quality, and I have been through all the other grades numerous times. This book is a disgrace to those of us in the Saxon camp. I plan to purchase the older (uglier) edition for my next student.
