Amazon.com Review
When his father returns East to collect the rest of the family, 13-year-old Matt is left alone to guard his family's newly built homestead. One day, Matt is brutally stung when he robs a bee tree for honey. He returns to consciousness to discover that his many stings have been treated by an old Native American and his grandson. Matt offers his only book as thanks, but the old man instead asks Matt to teach his grandson Attean to read. Both boys are suspicious, but Attean comes each day for his lesson. In the mornings, Matt tries to entice Attean with tales from Robinson Crusoe, while in the afternoons, Attean teaches Matt about wilderness survival and Native American culture. The boys become friends in spite of themselves, and their inevitable parting is a moving tribute to the ability of shared experience to overcome prejudice. The Sign of the Beaver was a Newbery Honor Book; author Elizabeth Speare has also won the Newbery Medal twice, for The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Bronze Bow. (Ages 12 and older) --Richard Farr

3 ½ stars. Nice story for ages 10 and up.
By Jane
It’s educational about surviving in the wild Indian style - and seeing a friendship develop between Indian boy Attean and Matt who is 12 years old. Attean’s grandfather wants Matt to teach Attean how to read and write in white man’s language. Attean teaches Matt how to trap, fish, make a bow and arrow, etc. I liked learning things that the Indians did.

It’s a pleasant read, but it didn’t excite me or surprise me the way “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen did. Hatchet was the story of a boy surviving alone in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash. Matt lives alone in a cabin in the wilderness in 1768 Maine. Matt and his father built a cabin and planted corn and pumpkins. Then the father left for many months to get his wife and other child to bring them to the cabin.

Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 144 pages. Swearing language: none. Sexual content: none. Setting: 1768 Maine. Copyright: 1983. Genre: children’s fiction.

Home Run!
By Robin
This was assigned reading at school for my 5th grader. He loved it so much he wanted it to keep going and wants to get other stories by this author. He was very involved with the main character and kept giving me summaries of what they read in class. Highly recommend even if it's not an assigned book!

Great book
By Donald Pyles
This was a fantastic book, I am ten years old and loved it. My dad is an American history teacher and I am going to try to get him to read it. I hate highly recommend this book to people nine and older, because you have to know some of the history. It is definitely a five star book!
